“The rich got quite a bit richer this past year, according to this year’s rankings of the 400 wealthiest Americans. Forbes magazine released its annual list on Wednesday, and the combined net worth jumped 13% to $1.7 trillion in 2012, up from $1.5 trillion in 2011. The boost came thanks to the rising stock market and a rebound in real estate values – especially in cities like Los Angeles and New York.”

“Lower rates were supposed to spark a re-financing boom that would free up billions of dollars as monthly mortgage payments dropped, but oops, very few homeowners are creditworthy now that having a pulse and the ability to lie are no longer sufficient to get a mortgage. The Fed can funnel trillions to banks, but it can’t force them to lend money to uncreditworthy borrowers putting up phantom collateral. So the Fed is back to the game of goosing phantom assets higher with perception management.”

With $114 million, Obama just outraises Romney in August

“Former Massachusetts governor Romney and fellow Republicans raised more than $111 million, continuing a string of high-dollar hauls. While Obama shattered every fundraising record in 2008 after becoming the first presidential candidate to opt out of a federal matching funds system, Romney has outpaced him significantly on the fundraising front since April. That has added to a cash advantage on the Republican side that is helped by the success of outside groups, or Super PACs, that have spent lavishly in support of the Republican candidate with unlimited funds from millionaire donors.”

UBS ‘Rogue trader’ goes to court in $2.3 billion fraud trial

“A trader accused of losing $2.3 billion in a fraud at Swiss bank UBS goes on trial in London on Monday in a case expected to once again put the supervision of bankers under the spotlight. Ghanaian-born equities trader Kweku Adoboli denies two counts of fraud and two of false accounting between 2008 and September last year. The son of a Ghanaian former United Nations official, Adoboli worked for the global synthetic equities division at UBS in the City of London financial district. The true magnitude of the risk exposure had been hidden through ‘fictitious’ positions allegedly taken by the trader, the bank said.”
