War Veteran with PTSD Faces Life in Prison for Pot

“US Marine Corps combat veteran Kristoffer Lewandowski, who served in three tours of duty overseas including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, reportedly faces up to life in prison for pot charges connected to a June 2014 raid on his Geronimo, OK home that occurred after his wife and neighbors called police to get him help for a post-traumatic stress disorder flare-up. However, rather than providing mental health resources, police responding on the scene searched Lewandowski’s home for contraband and found six marijuana plants, weighing in at less than an ounce of plant matter in total, and charged him with, among other offenses, felony marijuana cultivation.”

“In true dramatic fashion, the Greek government submitted an 11th-hour proposal late yesterday that meets most creditor demands, in exchange for a new 53.5 billion euro bailout … Greece’s third since 2011.  In fact, details of the proposal, including spending cuts, pension reform and tax hikes, are nearly identical to the offer made by European creditors way back on June 26, which was summarily rejected by the Greek government, and then by voters in a July 5 referendum.  Hmm … the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Texas Town Charging Reporters $79,000 for Emails About Cop Abuse

“Days after McKinney, Texas, police officer Eric Casebolt was filmed pointing his service weapon at a group of unarmed black teenagers at a pool party this month, Gawker submitted a Public Information Act request to the city of McKinney asking to see Casebolt’s records and any emails about his conduct sent or received by McKinney Police Department employees. Today, we received a letter from the city’s attorneys claiming that fulfilling our request would cost $79,229.09.  Since when are year-old emails not searchable? Is the city of McKinney still corresponding via telegram?”

The Police State and Property Taxes

“Once a video of the Dent incident became public, the officer lost his job. He’s now on trial, facing charges of mistreatment of a prisoner.  Dent also decided to sue the city of Inkster, Michigan, where the incident occurred. Surprisingly, he won. The city of Inkster settled for $1.4 million.  The problem is, Inkster doesn’t just have an extra $1.4 million laying around. So what did the local politicians do? They decided to raise property taxes.  A local media source estimates the new property tax will amount to about $179 on a home valued at about $55,400.  Now that doesn’t sound like a lot. But consider that the median income in Inkster is just $26,500 and that 40% of its people live below the poverty line.”

“The Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) puts together a report called ‘How They Get You‘.  People (mostly young non-white men) are arrested and held for hours, or overnight, or for several days, for trivial charges.  PROP’s report, which you should read if you can bear it, records arrests of people for putting stickers on scaffolds, for dropping a dog’s leash long enough to scoop dog poop from the sidewalk, for standing in the hallways of buildings where they live, and for swerving a bike to avoid being hit by a car and landing on the sidewalk.  And to that proud list of protections, we can now add arrests made for ‘manspreading.'”

WV teacher threatened with fine for violating Obama school snack rules

“The Williamson PreK-8 teacher, who was not identified, would give her students ‘wrapped candy’ as a reward for their hard work and good behavior.  Because the practice was an alleged violation of the federal rules championed by first lady Michelle Obama, Mingo County Schools Director of Child Nutrition Kay Maynard ‘placed a call to officials at the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) to report the incident,’ the Williamson Daily News reports.  Maynard also spoke to Williamson PreK-8 principal Shannon Blackburn, telling him about the possibility of a monetary fine for the teacher.  When news spread, parents and students mobilized, collecting pennies to pay the potential fine.”

Johnny Depp facing 10 years in prison for taking his dogs to Australia

“The actor, who is currently filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, landed himself in trouble earlier this month when he brought his two Yorkshire terriers to the country on his private jet. He failed to declare them and therefore broke the country’s quarantine laws.  On 25 May, an Australian senate committee was told that if it goes to court, Depp could receive a sentence of up t0 10 years in prison or a maximum fine of AU$340,000 (£172,000). The pilot could also face up to two years behind bars for his role in the situation.  Officials have referred to the case as ‘very serious’.  The story originated when pictures of Depp taking his dogs to the local groomer surfaced on social media.”

New law forces Little League chapter to pay for concession stand permit

“The Genesee County health department is requiring the Batavia Little League to get a permit to operate its concession stand.  The Little League tells us it can’t afford it. It all comes down to a new law requiring any organization that serves food to have a permit. We spoke with the vice president of the Batavia Little League. The Batavia Little League says it was thrown a ‘curveball.’ The Genesee County health department is requiring the league to get a permit to continue selling food.  ‘It’s no different than the little six-year-old kid having a lemonade stand,’ says Reinhart. ‘Are they going to go and kick those kid’s stands down and ask them for $175?'”

Iraqi family slaughtered in suspected US-led air strike
