Jacob Hornberger: Judicial Immunity for the Assassins

hornberger1

“In the wake of President Obama’s apology for the killing of two Western hostages in a drone assassination in Pakistan, people might be wondering if it will be possible for surviving family members to recover in a legal action against the assassins for the wrongful death of their loved ones.  The answer is unequivocally no. The reason is that long ago, the judicial branch of the federal government, acquiescing to the overwhelming power of the national-security branch of the government, decided to erect a wall of immunity around CIA assassinations.  Moreover, the federal courts made it clear that the national-security branch was the final determiner of what constitutes ‘national security.'”

Government Corruption Has Become Rampant

Senior SEC employees spent up to 8 hours a day surfing porn sites instead of cracking down on financial crimes.  Nuclear Regulatory Commission workers watch porn instead of cracking down on unsafe conditions at nuclear plants.  NSA spies pass around homemade sexual videos and pictures they’ve collected from spying on the American people.  NSA employees have also been caught using their mass surveillance powers to spy on love interests, such as girlfriends, obsessions or former wives … and to eavesdrop on American soldiers’ intimate conversations with their wives back home.  A TSA employee admitted that agents share – and laugh at – nude scans of passengers.”

Nepali State to Seize All Relief Funds from Bank Accounts

“After the money grab led to a public outcry, Nepali state actor Narayan Malego claimed that the seizure was justified, promising that the Nepali bureaucracy will ensure that ‘benevolent donations are not misused and the rights of victims are protected.’  But The Economist reports that after speaking to politicians, journalists and activists all across Nepal, they found the state apparatus there to be ‘marked by systematic fraud, [with] the financing of political networks [benefiting] powerful local figures and, indirectly, criminal gangs.’ And as for the ‘rights of victims,’ The Jackson Sun reports that the Nepali state has already been blocking the delivery of aid items by holding up the goods in airports.”

Why Are so Many Refugees Drowning? And Why Don’t They Fly?

“It’s not because it’s too expensive. Rosling points out that a seat on these boats costs €1,000 or more, while a flight from Ethiopia to Sweden is only €400; from Lebanon to the UK is also €400; and from Egypt to Italy is only €320.  It’s not because their governments are stopping them, either. By and large, these states have no real ability or interest in stopping emigration.  Rather, it is about incentives.  Rosling points to EU Directive 2001/51/EC, which states — in essence — that to combat illegal immigration, ‘Every airline and boatline that brings a person without the proper documents for entry has to pay all the costs for returning that person back to their country of origin.'”

Croatian Swiss franc debtors demand central bank governor resign

“Thousands of Croatians holding loans denominated in Swiss francs took to the streets of Zagreb on Saturday, demanding local banks to restructure the debts and the central bank governor to step down for failing to take action. Some 60,000 Croatians hold around 27 billion kuna (£2.5 billion) worth of Swiss franc-denominated loans, mainly taken out during the 2000s when many in central and eastern Europe were attracted to low interest rates on the Swiss currency. The franc surged in January when the Swiss central bank scrapped its peg to the euro, driving the loans’ costs sharply higher. The Croatian government fixed the franc rate against the kuna at 6.39 for one year to put a cap on the mounting debts.”

Dentist Attacked for Charging Too Little For Teeth Cleaning

“When is it illegal for a licensed dentist in Arkansas to clean teeth? When he also happens to be a licensed orthodontist.  In 2013, Dr. Ben Burris ran afoul of Arkansas’ law when he started offering low-cost teeth cleanings.  Within weeks, Ben was told by the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners that he was breaking the law and that his license would be revoked if he continued offering the cleanings.  Arkansas prohibits licensed dental specialists like orthodontists from doing work outside of their specialty even though they are qualified to practice general dentistry. Faced with the threat of seeing his practice ruined and his 100+ employees out of work, Ben suspended the program.”

San Diego cop kills service dog after knocking on wrong door

San Diego police shot Ian Anderson’s pet pit bull, Burberry, after apparently knocking on the wrong door for a domestic disturbance call, Anderson says.

“A San Diego cop gunned down a man’s service dog after knocking on the wrong door, the heartbroken owner said.  Ian Anderson claims he opened the door to two officers early Sunday morning, and his pet pit bull, Burberry, bounded out behind him.  The first officer reached down as if to pet the 6-year-old pooch, but his partner danced away, drew his gun and unloaded, surveillance video revealed. ‘Boom. Shot right in the head, and he was done,’ Anderson told NBC San Diego. ‘He was dead.’  The officers were reportedly investigating a domestic disturbance call about 5:30 a.m. and ended up on Anderson’s doorstep by mistake.  It’s not clear why they targeted his house.”

Special operations armored vehicle pulls over driver who flipped the bird

“Lucas Jewell, 23, recorded his interaction on a cellphone with a team of ASO deputies in special-operations uniforms after the imposing Lenco Bear Cat Armored Personnel Carrier stopped his Ford Taurus at the Alachua County Headquarters Library downtown.   Jewell’s video was posted to Truth Voice and it includes his explanation that he gestured at the ASO vehicle because he does not approve of having a militarized police force.  The APC was on an assignment at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium during the Orange & Blue Debut football game.  UF Police Maj. Brad Barber said the APC and the ASO SWAT Team was called to the game as part of a standing security plan that was drawn up years ago.”

Angry bondholders storm Bank of Cyprus building, damage windows

“Aggrieved bondholders who lost funds in Cyprus’s 2013 bailout caused damage to the headquarters of Bank of Cyprus on Monday when they tried to storm the building.  At least one window of the glass-covered building in the capital Nicosia was smashed and another three cracked when several people among around 200 demonstrators hurled stones and other missiles, witnesses said.  One woman was knocked unconscious during the protest and was taken to hospital. There was a heavy police presence in the area.  Hundreds of junior bondholders saw savings turn to nothing in the tumult of Cyprus’s financial bailout in 2013.  Cyprus received 10 billion euros in aid from the European Union and the IMF.”

Cyprus passes foreclosure laws, clears IMF rescue program hurdle

“Lawmakers in Cyprus on Saturday passed key insolvency laws designed to open the taps for more international bailout cash. The vote makes it possible to operate foreclosure laws that international creditors have demanded as a condition for extending more loans to Cyprus. Recession, high unemployment and declining incomes have produced defaults on more than half of all private loans. The new laws should make it easier for banks to demand payment or seize assets, thereby reducing the banks’ own liabilities. The International Monetary Fund has been withholding 88 million euros ($95 million) in rescue money, citing Cyprus’ delay in giving banks the legal tools to deal with bad debt.”
