ECB’s Celebration of Its New $1.4 Billion Tower Is Spoiled by Protesters

“Anti-austerity protesters seeking to spoil the inauguration of the European Central Bank’s new headquarters in Frankfurt’s east end set vehicles alight, erected barricades and left a trail of destruction across the city.  Police deployed water cannons to restore calm and keep the demonstrators at bay in the area surrounding the 1.3 billion-euro ($1.4 billion) tower, after setting up barbed wire and road blocks. Nine days after the ECB started buying sovereign debt in a 1.1 trillion-euro plan to revive inflation and rescue the economy, protesters are laying the blame for recession and unemployment in the 19-nation euro area at the doors of Draghi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.”

Bystander’s YouTube upload shows cops shooting, killing fleeing man

“The video, taken by a bystander, surfaced Wednesday, a day after the Tuesday shooting death of Antonio Zambrano-Montes, 35. The video, which sparked protests, shows police firing at the man then chasing him across a busy intersection and shooting him multiple more times. About a dozen shots were fired, according to the video. Police told the paper they had to fire because they were threatened.  The video is among a recent wave of footage uploaded to YouTube capturing police-involved shootings. The videos have come from a variety of sources, taken by bystanders and police officer dash or body cams.”

Defense Bill Gives Sacred Native American Sites To Mining Company

“The U.S. Senate passed a measure authorizing the nation’s defense programs Friday, and along with it managed to give lands sacred to Native Americans to a foreign company that owns a uranium mine with Iran.  The $585 billion National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 is one of the must-pass pieces of legislation that Congress moves every year. But like they did in attaching extraneous riders to the must-pass government funding bill, lawmakers used the defense bill as a vehicle to pass a massive public lands package.  The deal gives a subsidiary of the Australian-English mining firm Rio Tinto 2,400 acres of the Tonto National Forest so it can mine a massive copper deposit.”

The Luxury Homes That Torture and Your Tax Dollars Built

“James Elmer Mitchell and John Bruce Jessen are not the first Americans to employ  waterboarding and other ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ against our enemies.  But they are almost certainly the only ones to get rich doing it.  They did so by employing what is widely dismissed as ‘voodoo science’ based on misapplied principles in a program that CIA records suggest produced little, if any, intelligence of significant value.  And they might have gotten even richer. The Senate Intelligence Committee report says they secured a contract with the CIA in 2006 valued ‘in excess of $180 million.’  The CIA canceled the deal three years later, but by then the duo had received $81 million.”

90-year-old Fort Lauderdale man arrested twice for feeding homeless

“Police watched, recorded video and apprehended him in the act.  He was, after all, pretty conspicuous. When you’re on the lookout for a 90-year-old World War II veteran wearing a chef’s uniform and hat, Arnold Abbott is hard to miss.  Making matters worse for the accused was all the available evidence. Pasta with cubed ham. Lots of it. And, quite brazenly, a white onion celery sauce, too.  Abbott now faces two counts of breaking a week-old Fort Lauderdale ordinance, each charge carrying a possible 60-day jail term and $500 fine.  His suspected crime?  Feeding the homeless.”

Ivan Eland: Revealed U.S. Strategy to Battle ISIS Is Wanting

eland_ivan_100x1331

“The United States should accept the reality that Iraq has now been effectively partitioned and recognize the autonomous governance of Sunni areas, much as the Kurds have done in northeastern Iraq. Then the Sunnis will be much less threatened by the Shi’ite central government, because it will be very weak or even non-existent. Then the Sunni tribes would have no incentive to support ISIS and thus would be more likely to turn against it—as they did before. The recognition of Iraq’s partition is the only hope for the United States to avoid escalation into another quagmire on the ground in Iraq.”

80% Catalans say Yes to independence in symbolic ‘referendum’

“The Minister of Justice, Rafael Catala, on behalf of the Spanish government, defined the vote as ‘political propaganda organized by pro-independence forces.’  After Spain’s High Court ruled the independence referendum proposed by Catalan leader Artur Mas unconstitutional last month, the Madrid government has also issued a ban on the informal poll, forbidding Catalans from making any public show of support for independence.  Earlier, the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, stated the vote ‘will not have any effect.’  But that did not stop some 41,000 volunteers from organizing the election with over 1,300 polling centers set up for the historic vote.”

Spain Moves Military Assets Into Catalonia Before ‘Illegal’ Secession Vote

“‘Everything is all set for Nov. 9,’ says a senior Catalan regional government official as the region prepares to defy both the central government and the country’s highest court and proceed with a much-disputed weekend vote on whether to secede from Spain. And while the Spanish government has not specified what legal consequences Catalan leaders, poll workers or voters might face Sunday, when they go to vote, The LA Times reports that Madrid has reportedly readied thousands of Civil Guard police officers to travel to Catalonia this weekend if needed.”

Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession

“Republicans were more inclined to support the idea, with 29.7 percent favoring it compared with 21 percent of Democrats.  By region, the idea was least popular in New England, the cradle of the Revolutionary War, with just 17.4 percent of respondents open to pulling their state out.  It was most popular in the Southwest, where 34.1 percent of respondents back the idea.  That region includes Texas, where an activist group is calling the state’s legislature to put the secession question on a statewide ballot. Anger with President Barack Obama’s handling of issues ranging from healthcare reform to the rise of Islamic State militants drives some of the feeling.”

Abe’s party loses local vote after Japan’s security policy shift

“The election in the western prefecture of Shiga was the first high-profile poll since Mr Abe’s cabinet adopted a resolution ending the ban on exercising ‘collective self-defence’, or aiding a friendly country under attack – the most dramatic change in Japanese security policy in decades.  Mr Abe has argued the change is needed to cope with a tough security environment, but the move has stirred angst among many voters wary of entanglement in foreign wars and worried that Japan’s post-war pacifist constitution is being gutted. Tokyo and Beijing have long been at odds over territorial claims and Japan’s military record before the end of the World War II.”
