Iowa Rep. Steve King wants bill to repeal everything Obama has done

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/repsteveking-publicdomain1.jpg

“Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a favorite among tea party Republicans, told an audience on Tuesday that he would like to introduce a bill that, once enacted, would nullify every single law President Barack Obama has signed over the last three years.”  [Yet where does spending originate but in the GOP-controlled House?  How about this: Let’s go back to September 10, 2001, and pretend this monstrous growth in the state and the effective abolition of the constitution ever happened.  Deal?]

U.S. auto bailout cost keeps rising

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/General-Motors-HQ-file-photo-via-AFP1.jpg

“The U.S. Treasury raised its estimate of the net cost to U.S. taxpayers of rescuing the country’s auto industry by $3.3 billion, as the weak economy restrains the industry’s rebound.  The Treasury told Congress in a new report seen on its website Monday that the cost of the government’s massive bailout of Detroit in the economic crisis of 2007-2008 would hit $25 billion, based on figures to May 31.  A year ago, when hopes were that the economy was solidly recovering and the housing market might turn around, the Treasury was projecting losses on the industry bailout of just $14.3 billion.”

USDA spends $2M, gets one intern, program fails

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Gehrke-3.jpg

“United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials spent $2 million on an internship program that had one intern, as it failed to use properly $63 million in federal funding provided for USDA to protect itself from hackers.”  [It depends on the definition of ‘use properly’.  From their perspective, was it not proper for USDA administrators to line their pockets and ensure the budget is preserved going forward?]

National Weather Service “ammunition” solicitation triggers confusion

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/capital-weather-gang_611x127.jpg

“What NMFS is doing with the 46,000 rounds of ammunition is another question. It may support its law enforcement function, described by NOAA accordingly:  NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement is dedicated to enforcing laws that conserve and protect our nation’s living marine resources and their natural habitat. Our goal is to assure that the many people who enjoy these resources for recreation or rely on them for business follow the rules that will maintain the species for future generations.” [People must be shot so fish can live?]

U.S. to buy $170M in meat, fish to help farms hit by drought

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Drought-aid-US-to-buy-170M-in-meat-fish-NR22HAAP-x.jpg

“The latest drought package from the White House would focus on the purchase of up to $100 million of pork, $50 million of chicken, and $10 million of both lamb and catfish products for federal food nutrition assistance programs, including food banks. Officials within the agriculture industry said more details, such as the type and quality of meat that will be purchased, along with the amount, needed to be known to determine if the actions will have any measurable impact on producers.”  [Don’t know if it’ll work, but doesn’t personally cost them anything to try…]

Glenn Greenwald: The Right’s brittle heroes

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/bush.png

“The ‘chickenhawk’ insult that was so popular among Democrats during the Bush years has completely disappeared, as they now celebrate the so-called Toughness of two political leaders — Obama and Biden — in their continuous willingness to use military force in other countries even though neither ever served in the military.  But the American Right seems to have a particular need to inflate their leaders into beacons of courage, self-sufficiency and virtue, even when their lives are completely devoid of those traits. Paul Ryan is a perfect symbol of America’s political class.”

Drones in the sky over America

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Drones-in-the-sky-over-America1.jpg

“They’re coming: In a few years the skies over the United States will be filled with hundreds if not thousands of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, doing a variety of tasks — border security, disaster relief, search and rescue, counter-terrorism and looking down on people and streets on behalf of police departments.  But just what will they be looking for, and what sophisticated devices will they carry? And how deeply will they peer into the life of the average American?” [And who will be watching the watchers?]

Poland begins uncovering story of secret US detention center

“On an idyllic lake surrounded by woods and a double row of mesh-and-razor-wire fences about 100 miles north of Warsaw, there stands a secluded villa that the CIA once used to interrogate – and allegedly torture – top Al Qaeda suspects.  It’s the focal point for a Polish prosecutors’ top-secret probe into how their government tolerated rampant violations of international and Polish law.  Already Zbigniew Siemiatkowski, Poland’s former interior minister and intelligence chief, is charged with unlawful detention and corporal punishment for allowing the CIA to operate at Stare Kiejkuty from December 2002 to September 2003.”
