Indefinite Detention Injunction Does Irreparable Harm, Obama Admin. Lawyers Argue

“A lawyer for the plaintiffs, Bruce Afran, noted that the government’s lawyers told Judge Forrest during arguments after she issued her first temporary injunction in May that they did not know if the administration was using the detention provision. If the government is now arguing that stopping the practice would cause irreparable harm, it shows the administration was indeed using the law and violating the injunction, Afran said.”

White House demands military prisons for Americans under NDAA

“The White House has asked the US Second Circuit Court of Appeals to place an emergency stay on a ruling made last week by a federal judge so that the president’s power to indefinitely detain Americans without charge is reaffirmed immediately.  On Wednesday, September 12, US District Court Judge Katherine Forrest made permanent a temporary injunction she issued in May that bars the federal government from abiding by the indefinite detention provision in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, or NDAA.”

Controversial ‘naked’ airport body scanners to be scrapped in Europe, U.K.

“Critics said the machines invaded passengers’ privacy and the radiation they generate raised the risk of cancer. Some Muslim groups also refused to walk through them on religious grounds.  The European Commission ruled that the cancer risk was ‘close to zero’ but, under Brussels legislation, the three-year trial period has elapsed and it has decided not to ‘prioritise’ them for permanent use across the continent. The scanners will be replaced with ‘privacy-friendly’ machines which use radio-frequency technology.”

Even the Federal Reserve is warning about the data.  Janet Koech and Jian Wang economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, in arecent paper, make the message clear, don’t trust Chinese economic data.  Got that? The Chinese economy is deteriorating based on official data. However, the real situation is likely much worse.”

More Americans opting out of banking system

“Released Wednesday, the study found that 821,000 households opted out of the banking system from 2009 to 2011 and that the so-called unbanked population grew to 8.2 percent of U.S. households.  That means that roughly 17 million adults are without a checking or savings account. Another 51 million adults have a bank account, but use pawnshops, payday lenders or rent-to-own services, the FDIC said.  The study also found that one in four households, or 28.3 percent, either had one or no bank account.”
