“Originally CALEA only granted the ability to wiretap digital telephone networks, but in the years since CALEA was passed it has been greatly expanded to include all VoIP and broadband internet traffic. From 2004 to 2007 there was a 62 percent growth in the number of wiretaps performed under CALEA — and more than 3,000 percent growth in interception of internet data such as email.  By 2007, the FBI had spent $39 million on its DCSNet system, which collects, stores, indexes, and analyzes communications data.  The FCC ruled in 2005 that providers of broadband Internet access and interconnected VoIP services are regulable as ‘telecommunications carriers’ under CALEA.”

This level of concealment is indefensible in light of the $7.9 billion in federal contracts that the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the GEO Group (GEO)—the two largest publicly-traded, private prison firms—have been awarded since 2007.”

Security Theater Marches On With TSA “Freeze Drills”

“At Phoenix, Arizona’s airport, WITHIN the ‘secured’ area of the gates, I suddenly found myself in a bunch of travelers who were being sharply told to ‘STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE! DON’T MOVE!’. A TSA employee was pointing his blue-gloved hand at anyone who moved a muscle (including airport workers) and barking these orders. Beyond him were two other agents doing the same thing to everyone in a 90-degree radius. The tension was rather palpable, as you might imagine. No explanation was given, no other words were spoken. No one moved a muscle. Parents grabbed their children. Anyone who fidgeted or made a step forward got yelled at.”
