At the end of June, the California-based company–co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, who is married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin–announced that it is seeking the blessing of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its $299 panel of tests that give ordinary people a window into their extraordinary DNA. Assuming it gets that governmental gold seal (the FDA has 90 days to respond), there’s a good chance that cheapie DNA tests could become increasingly commonplace. That’s great if you’re an information lover.”

“Once the preserve of science fiction, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have advanced to the point where they can even be found in novelty headwear, which only makes an achievement of an international team of scientists more frightening. Using an off-the-shelf Emotiv BCI costing only a few hundred dollars, the team has shown that it’s possible to ‘hack’ a human brain and pull things like bank details straight out of your skull.”

Blind Mice Given Sight After Device Cracks Retinal Code

“Current devices are limited in the aid they provide to people with degenerative diseases of the retina, the part of the eye that converts light into electrical impulses to the brain. In research described today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists cracked the code the retina uses to communicate with the brain. The technology moves prosthetics beyond bright light and high-contrast recognition and may be adopted for human use within a year or two.”

“Many domestic wines, in fact, have levels of fluoride so high that they cannot be exported to Europe and other places where MCL thresholds for fluoride are lower than they are in the U.S. Yet the company encouraged these same growers to continue using high amounts of cryolite on grapes intended for domestic consumption, as U.S. standards are far more lenient. As a result, many domestic wines contain inordinate amounts of fluoride, some as high as six ppm or more, which greatly exceeds the EPA’s MCL for fluoride.”

Fluoride: Portland City Council poised to back water treatment

“The latest battleground is Portland, Ore., the largest U.S. city that doesn’t put fluoride in its municipal water supply. That appears about to change: A majority of the City Council has signaled a willingness to vote next week in favor of an ordinance to inject fluoride into drinking water, heading off a promised ballot initiative seeking to prevent it. The debate in free-thinking Portland has been a contest between the overwhelming weight of mainstream medical organizations and concerns of some critics about possible links to lower IQ and bone cancer, as well as citizens’ right to choose what is in their water. Oregon voters have rejected water fluoridation three times.”

Mammogram radiation may put young women at higher risk of breast cancer

“The study, which looked at 2,000 women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic markers in the Netherlands, France and the U.K. between 2006 and 2009, found women under 30 who experienced chest radiation had 43 precent increased risk of developing breast cancer over women who didn’t have exposure to chest radiation. Exposure before age 20 increased the risk by 62 percent. ‘We believe countries who use mammograms in women under 30 should reconsider their guidelines,’ one of the study’s authors, Anouk Pijpe of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, told the Associated Press.”
