“Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with the late Steve Jobs, revealed Tuesday his fondness for Australia and said he hopes to become a citizen.  ‘I actually like this country and want to become a citizen,’ he told the Australian Financial Review, saying he was particularly impressed with plans to roll out a national broadband network across the country.  Wozniak, who quit Apple in 1987 after 12 years, told local radio in Brisbane last week that he enjoyed his regular visits to Australia.”

ACLU Sues Federal Agencies Over License Plate Reader Information

http://www.gearfuse.com/wp-content/uploads/andrew/4_mar07/alpr_4

“The devices read license plates and search databases for stolen vehicles, wanted individuals, expired registrations, warrants, and more. However, they also record the time and location of every license plate they read, creating huge databases that can track potentially millions of people who have not committed any crimes or done anything wrong.  License plate readers are spreading rapidly around the country–they are already in use in at least 40 cities in Massachusetts across the state, including the Boston area, Worcester and Springfield–and are being used by federal law enforcement.”

Forced blood test for a Missouri drunk-driving suspect? Supreme Court to step in.

[‘Relatively routine’?]  “The US Supreme Court announced on Tuesday that it will take up a case examining whether police officers need a warrant before administering an involuntary blood test to a suspected drunk driver.   Although the case deals with a relatively routine interaction between police and motorists, the underlying legal issue will help define the scope of Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches involving forced blood tests.”

Google’s Brazil president faces an arrest warrant

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Google-homepage-file-photo-via-AFP1.jpg

“A Brazilian court said Tuesday that an arrest order was issued against Google Brazil’s president over his refusal to remove YouTube videos that ‘slander’ a mayoral candidate. Electoral authorities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul said Fabio Jose Silva Coelho committed the crime of ‘disobedience’ by not pulling two videos that ‘slander, insult and defame’ Campo Grande candidate Alcides Bernal.'”

Iran blocks access to Gmail

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Iran-blocked-access-to-Gmail-Monday-amid-first-steps-to-establish-a-walled-off-national-intranet-via-AFP1.jpg

“Iran blocked access to Google’s popular and relatively secure Gmail service Monday amid first steps by the Islamic republic to establish a walled-off national intranet separate from the worldwide Internet.  The curbs were announced in a mobile phone text message quoting Abdolsamad Khoramabadi, an adviser to Iran’s public prosecutor’s office and the secretary of an official group tasked with detecting Internet content deemed illegal. Several residents in Tehran told AFP they were unable to get into their Gmail accounts unless they used VPN (virtual private network) software.”

How close are we getting to a “papers please” society?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/1-Checkpoint-charlie.jpg

“The TSA’s trusted traveler program doesn’t cost anything, at least not yet. And what’s the harm in surrendering a little personal information in exchange for access to a faster screening line where you can leave your shoes, light outerwear and belt on, and are allowed to keep your laptop in its case and your 3-1-1 compliant liquids and gels bags in a carry-on?  Plenty, actually.  Pre-Check represents the latest step toward what many TSA-watchers consider a ‘papers please’ society, a darker version of America that before 9/11 only existed in the pages of dystopian novels.”

How Do You Take Your Poison?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/mr-fish-chris-hedges-Hemlock-3201.jpg

“Obama is not in charge. Romney would not be in charge. Politicians are the public face of corporate power. They are corporate employees. Their personal narratives, their promises, their rhetoric and their idiosyncrasies are meaningless. And that, perhaps, is why the cost of the two presidential campaigns is estimated to reach an obscene $2.5 billion. The corporate state does not produce a product that is different. It produces brands that are different. And brands cost a lot of money to sell.”

‘Every Person Is Afraid of the Drones’: The Strikes’ Effect on Life in Pakistan

“Interviews with people living through the drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas are human reminders that America’s drone campaign affects not only those hit by missiles, whether rightly or wrongly, but also innocents all around them.  Our drones are attacking the community where they live.  The American public is told by the Obama Administration that drone strikes are surgical. Precise. That they ‘limit collateral damage.’ And that civilian casualties are rare. Is that the truth?  Does it adequately capture reality?  Ponder a few interviews from the report — decide for yourself.”

Fighting The Terrorists By Terrorizing The Innocent

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/usdrone_afp6701.jpg

“A devastating report I’ve just read, ‘Living Under Drones: Death, Injury, and Trauma to Civilians from US Drone Practices in Pakistan’.  This thing is required reading.  This isn’t some half-assed, crazed droolings of some hippy-dippy Lefty twerp who ought to get a bath and a haircut: This was written by Stanford and New York University lawyers—and it shows. It’s clearly and devastatingly written, with the facts, testimony and evidence so scrupulously laid out that it’s almost like the brief for the prosecution of the war crimes trial that we can only pray will one day take place.”
