“Barbaric people used force and violence to get what they wanted; civilized transactions are based on mutual consent and cooperation. We know that the economy of the Soviet Union, driven by brute force, was a disaster. How do you think the economy of the US – heavily persuaded by the padded force of the Yellen-led Fed – will fare? Is today’s Fed a modern, civilized institution? Or an archaic throw-back to the past? And what about the dollar itself? Is it a form of modern money… or a barbarous relic, depending on the police power of the state to give it value?”

Cameron Announces U.K. Plans for Debut Issue of Islamic Gilts
“Prime Minister David Cameron said the U.K. plans to become the first country outside the Muslim world to sell a Shariah-compliant bond as soon as next year. Cameron laid out his government’s intentions in a speech to the World Islamic Economic Forum in London. The Islamic bonds, known as sukuk, would be valued at about 200 million pounds ($320 million). Cameron also said London Stock Exchange Group Plc (LSE) is creating an Islamic market index. Islamic bonds are typically backed by assets or cash flow because of the religion’s ban on interest. About 60 percent of the world’s sukuk is issued from Malaysia, according to Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre.”
Police firing GPS tracking ‘bullets’ at cars during chases
“Police in Iowa and Florida, however, seem to have taken the counsel of Q from the ‘Bond’ movies. Instead of constantly hurtling after potential madmen, they have found an entirely new method of tracking their cars. It’s called Starchase. Essentially, it’s a cannon that fires ‘bullets’ that are sticky GPS devices. CBS 12 offered an example in real life of how it’s done. Iowa state trooper Tim Sieleman seemed rather mesmerized. He told CBS 12: ‘If you had told me 16 years ago that I would have had a cannon on the front of my car, I wouldn’t have believed it.’ The system costs $5,000, and each bullet sets the taxpayer back $500.”
Interpol proposes new solution to shootings, terrorism: ‘Arm civilians’
“What is the Secretary General’s suggestion? Arm law-abiding citizens. In an interview with ABC News, Secretary General Ronald Noble elaborated on that idea, noting that there are two paths governments can go down to protect ‘soft targets’ or unarmed civilians from terrorists and sociopaths. The first is to move in the direction of a police state with armed guards, security checkpoints, surveillance cameras and metal detectors everywhere. The other is to encourage responsible citizens to keep and bear arms for self-defense.”
Behind the Saudi crack-up
“Bandar bin Sultan is right about one thing: though the US has bankrolled the insurgents in Syria for more than two years and though it claims to be able to distinguish a democratic freedom fighter from a radical jihadist, it has little or no influence over any of its beneficiaries in Syria. One by one, the ‘moderate’ insurgents pledge loyalty to Al-Qaeda and one by one they scoff at the pleas of their benefactor to come to the negotiating table. The US has no influence over these fighters, but still claims to be able to pick a good rebel over a bad one.”
The Mises View: “Rejecting War”

Rumors of War
“We live in scary times … and they’re going to get even scarier. But at least you can rest assured that your money will be safe and will continue to grow not just DESPITE the break-out of regional and civil wars … but BECAUSE of them. To survive and prosper during this new era of global warfare and ever-more repressive governments, it will help to have greater wealth — and you’ll sleep better knowing that your wealth will be there when you need it most. And when you take advantage of the opportunities I’ve described, I believe it will be virtually impossible NOT to make money.”
The Overview Effect
“‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.”
