Wendy McElroy: Measuring the Extent of a Police State

mcelroy2

“There is a key difference between America and most police states. In East Germany, the average person knew he lived under tyranny and he did not expect justice to result from petitioning the tyrant. In America, many if not most people still trust the government enough to believe in reform rather than in the quiet revolution of saying ‘no.’ They still listen to the mainstream media, no matter how bitterly they complain about it. Nothing else can explain why people surrender their liberty and money in return for broken and retreaded promises. Even if America is a police state, it’s not intuitively obvious how far the process has progressed. All states violate rights. When does one become totalitarian?”

How times have changed: Eric Schmidt on privacy in 2009 and today

“Back in 2009, Google CEO Eric Schmidt told CNBC that ‘if you are doing something you don’t want anybody to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.’ Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published an interview with Schmidt, during which he said: ‘The NSA allegedly collected the phone records of 320 million people in order to identify roughly 300 people who might be a risk. It’s just bad public policy…and perhaps illegal. You have to take a strong position in favor of privacy. Privacy is really the right to be left alone. Do you really want the government tracking all of those information, especially if you’re just a domestic citizen who is just going about your life?'”

Google’s Schmidt Sees Encryption Killing Censorship

“Protecting Internet traffic with hard-to-crack code may prevent governments from censoring their populations’ communications within a decade, Google Inc. (GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt said.  Schmidt described the coming of a ‘network age’ in which Internet users communicate and organize socially through private channels shielded by encryption, which scrambles data with a mathematical formula that can be decoded only with a special digital key.  ‘We can end government censorship in a decade,’ Schmidt said during a speech in Washington. ‘The solution to government surveillance is to encrypt everything.'”

Read the previous parts first to get the full gist of Micon’s life as he gives us a walkthrough of from his High School days in Indiana until his big poker success as the 2006 World Series of Poker.  In the final part of this interview Micon speaks extensively about Bitcoin. Micon got into Bitcoin from the early stages and watched the currency explode into a worldwide phenomenon. The fame and fortune that Bitcoin brings to many people also creates some problems, and Micon goes in-depth on one of the companies that’s not running a legit business in his eyes, Butterfly Labs.”

World’s First Payroll Software to Pay in Bitcoins

“Canadian HR Tech startup, Wagepoint will be launching a bitcoin integration on November 25 that will help employees of small and medium sized businesses in Canada get a portion of their net pay in bitcoin. This integration with Wagepoint’s online payroll software, Pay has been made possible through a partnership with the first and largest Canadian bitcoin exchange, VirtEx.  At present, companies / employees have the opportunity to directly deposit payroll into bank accounts with established financial institutions. But now for the very first time, SMB’s in Canada can give their employees a brand new alternative i.e. bitcoin wallets.”

Man, Method, and Recasting

rringer-13

“The first lesson, of course, is to be very careful not to allow the Discouragement Fraternity to put a damper on your ideas, your dreams, or your vision. Second, there’s gold in old — old ideas, old movies, old TV shows, old books — things that have been around forever.  In fact, if a service or product has hit bottom, it might just be the perfect time for an entrepreneur with vision to revive it, recast it, and create a whole new industry in the process.  Third, and perhaps the most important lesson of all, the key is not whether an idea, product, or service is old or new, but how well someone executes it.  Or, as my dad said, ‘It’s all man and method.'”

No Light. No Tunnel. Just More Dark.

“Now is the time to figure out what you want and what you need in a new country. Where would you feel most comfortable? Go visit those places, spend time mingling in daily life, not just hanging out at hotels, tourist restaurants and museums. Go shopping in the supermarkets and look for the kinds of products you routinely buy at home. Grab snacks at local bakeries or pubs, and eat at the restaurants where locals gather. Ride public transit or rent a car and gauge your tolerance for local traffic. Ask a local real-estate agent to show you properties in a price range you could realistically afford to buy or rent. Open a bank account.”

The Greatest Opportunity in 30 Years

“The difficult part is to muster the courage to hold on when all your senses are screaming that it’s a huge mistake, that your investment will never pan out, that today’s fool (you) is tomorrow’s loser.  If, on the other hand, you don’t mind going where others fear to tread, opportunities practically jump into your outstretched hands.  Here’s the best one I know of right now: gold stocks.  Actually, to say they’re a ‘good opportunity’ is a laughable understatement: Gold stocks are at an extreme low we haven’t seen in over 30 years in this industry.  Let me prove it to you.”

Goldman Sees at Least 15% Losses for Gold, Iron Ore

“Gold, which was at $1,244.80 an ounce on the Comex at 8:51 a.m. in New York, will drop $1,050 at the end of next year, Goldman said in the report, restating an earlier forecast. Currie said last month that gold is a ‘slam dunk’ sell for next year as the U.S. economy extends its recovery.   Bullion is headed for the first drop since 2000 this year as investors cut holdings. Futures lost as much as 2.6 percent yesterday after the Fed signaled that tapering may start in the months ahead, according to minutes from its October meeting. Lower gold prices would alleviate concern about inflation and current account deficits in emerging markets such as Turkey and India, it said.”

Can Bitcoin catch on? Gift card site says 3% reward will help

“Recall that a big problem for Bitcoin is that it’s great in theory but, in practice, it’s not good for much besides speculating.  One way this could change is by incentive programs like the one offered by online gift card service Gyft. The site, which offers users an online way to combine retail gift cards from places like the Gap and Target, is offering a 3% discount whenever someone uses its service to make a purchase with Bitcoin. The Gyft program is significant because it gives consumers a reason to use Bitcoin instead of a credit card.  CEO Vinny Lingham said Gyft users are spending over six figures worth of Bitcoin every week on everything from big retailers to Whoppers at Burger King.”
