Vicco to consider paying police chief in Bitcoin

“The city commission in Vicco is set to consider whether to begin paying the police chief’s salary in the virtual currency Bitcoin.  Chief Tony Vaughn made the request during the commission’s regular meeting last week, explaining under his proposed arrangement the city would take out all applicable taxes from his salary as normal, and then convert the take-home pay to Bitcoin, which is then transferred instantly to Vaughn.  City Attorney Lori Reynolds also noted the logistics of setting up such as transaction with the city, a heavily regulated government entity, paying an employee with an unregulated currency not yet recognized by the federal government.”

Virtual Currency Meets Healthcare as Polish Dentist Accepts Bitcoin

“A dentist in Kielce in central Poland is offering a 10% discount for customers who pay with bitcoin. Profident, which also makes dental equipment, says it is Poland’s and possibly Europe’s first dental clinic to accept bitcoin payments.  As with other bitcoin-accepting businesses in other parts of the world, the company cited bank transaction fees as a reason to move towards bitcoin payments.  So far, the dentist hasn’t had any patients paying with bitcoin, but Zbożeń is confident about the rising popularity of bitcoin in Poland.  ‘Right now, [accepting bitcoin payments] is more a marketing issue, but I believe that cryptocurrency will get much more popular in next decade,’ he says.”

British Island of Alderney Looking to Mint Physical Bitcoins

“The tiny Channel Island of Alderney is launching an audacious bid to become the first jurisdiction to mint physical Bitcoins, amid a global race to capitalise on the booming virtual currency. The three-mile long British crown dependency has been working on plans to issue physical Bitcoins in partnership with the UK’s Royal Mint since the summer, according to documents seen by the Financial Times.  It wants to launch itself as the first international centre for Bitcoin transactions by setting up a cluster of services that are compliant with anti-money laundering rules, including exchanges, payment services and a Bitcoin storage vault.”

Bitcoin Survival Guide: Everything You Need About the Future of Money

“Bitcoin is a re-imagining of international finance, something that breaks down barriers between countries and frees currency from the control of federal governments. Bitcoin is controlled by open source software that operates according to the laws of mathematics — and by the people who collectively oversee this software. The software runs on thousands of machines across the globe, but it can be changed. It’s just that a majority of those overseeing the software must agree to the change.  In short, Bitcoin is kind of like the internet, but for money.  What does that mean, specifically?”

Bitcoin developers offer $10,000 virtual bounty to fix mystery Mac bug

“Price fluctuations and hackers aren’t the only challenge facing the virtual currency Bitcoin, with developers pooling funds for a virtual bounty offered to anyone who can fix a bug they fear could hemper take up.  Bitcoin developers and their counterparts backing the younger, rival virtual currency Litecoin have thrown together a virtual bounty worth around $10,000 for anyone who can figure out what’s causing a data corruption issue in certain Bitcoin and Litecoin wallets on Macs.  According to Warren Togami, a developer who contributes to both Bitcoin and Litecoin, the unusual step of offering a sizeable bounty has been taken because the bug is considered critical enough to stifle Bitcoin uptake.”

Bitcoin is a money platform with many APIs

“On the Bitcoin network, you can programmatically check your balance, or the balance of any Bitcoin wallet. You can create and consume transactions on a level playing field. You can operate a bank, a stock exchange, a wire transfer service or an escrow service without anyone’s permission or accreditation. The Internet made every blogger able to reach an audience as big as that of the New York Times. Bitcoin makes every node, even that running on your cellphone, equal in capability to Wells Fargo or Bank of America.”

The crypto-currency ecosystem: alt-coins, meta-coins and blockchain-riders

“Where bitcoin pioneered four new technologies, proving that a distributed currency could work at scale, it has now spawned a growing ecosystem of rapid innovation that is re-combining these core inventions. The distributed blockchain, consensus through proof-of-work/stake, and P2P networking will continue to evolve and astound us long after crypto-currencies become accepted and mainstream.”

15 new UK banks in five years, predicts Metro founder

“Mr Thomson, backed by US banking entrepreneur Vernon Hill, launched Metro Bank in 2010. It was the first award of a new full banking licence since the 19th Century, underlining the barriers to entry that new competitors face.  New entrants to the market have failed to loosen the grip of the ‘Big Five’ banks, which includes the taxpayer-owned Lloyds-Halifax brands and RBS-NatWest.  It was announced in March that new applicants for UK banking licences would face more ‘relaxed’ demands on the amount of capital they hold as part of plans to reduce barriers to entry and stimulate competition.”
