Coroner slams handling of Kendrick Johnson case

“In a scathing report recently obtained by CNN, the coroner in the case of a Georgia teen found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat blasted how the initial investigation was handled. While stopping short of directly accusing authorities of deliberately tampering with the evidence, attorney Chevene King said problems with the surveillance are only the latest in a series of oddities that have drawn national attention to Johnson’s death. A state medical examiner ruled his death accidental, despite evidence of a neck injury found in a second autopsy conducted by a pathologist hired by the family. His fingernails had been clipped, his clothes were missing and his organs had been removed and replaced by newspaper.”

David Galland: Toad Tossing

“He described a case he was involved in, related to prostitution, in which he argued that the federal government had no status in the case, given that neither the courtesan nor her customer had crossed state lines. The judge replied by pointing out that the condom used had been manufactured in another state, and therefore the federal government was within its right to prosecute based on the legislation emanating from the Interstate Commerce Clause in the Constitution. When the government awards to itself unassailable legal cover for its every action, then by definition no rule is permanent, no law nonmalleable, and no corner of human action impervious to government assault.”

‘Terms and Conditions May Apply’ Trailer

How the Government Tracks You: NSA Surveillance

“The U.S. Government has turned the Internet into something it was never intended to be: a system for spying on us in our most private moments. Out of control government surveillance is a dangerous form of censorship. Don’t be intimidated. Share this video.”

Silent Circle, Lavabit launch “DarkMail Alliance” to thwart e-mail spying

“At Wednesday’s Inbox Loveconference held at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus, the founders of Lavabit and Silent Circle announced that they want to change the world of e-mail completely by putting privacy and security at its core. The two companies collaborated to create the DarkMail Alliance, a soon-to-be-formed non-profit organization that would be in charge of maintaining and organizing the open-source code for its new e-mail protocol. The new protocol will be based on Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, or XMPP, and it’s set to be released in mid-2014. The group will ditch the old Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, used for almost every bit of e-mail on the Internet.”

Internationalizing the Internet

“Cyber-sovereignty is not the answer to the problems of government surveillance, because it is government run. Stripped of government, CS can indeed be a powerful alternative to wrest the Internet from US control. However, a free market based CS approach focused on decentralization, open source initiatives, innovative Internet services, internationalized domain extensions, and domestic alternatives to social networking sites and search engines can help shift more Internet traffic away from US services and servers.”

From Walmart To Bitcoin: The CEO Behind The Chinese Exchange

“Lee describes himself as a global citizen. Chinese-American, he was born in Africa; his entrepreneurial parents ran a flip-flop factory in the Ivory Coast. He went to New Jersey for boarding school, then Stanford for college. An engineer by training, he worked on social networking before it exploded (at Yahoo! Groups), then moved to China seven years ago to work on the cloud (at EMC) and then digital entertainment (at BesTV, a Chinese company) before being poached by Walmart China to be its VP of technology as it launched an e-commerce operation there. Lee decided in September 2012 that he wanted to start his own business rather than work for another big company.”

Bill Bonner: Is QE Broken?

Bill-Bonner2

“Forget about tapering off. Instead, think of tapering on.  How about this as a possibility? With no more ginned-up earnings from ultra-low interest expenses… no boost to top-line revenues from rising consumer spending… and no pricing power – corporate America’s earnings begin to fall.  QE or no QE, stock prices fall. The Fed panics. It will be confronted with dropping asset prices and disinflationary (possibly deflationary) consumer prices. It will have to find a way to modify QE so that it does put dollars directly into the economy. Second, this new push – if it comes – may well send stocks soaring again. There’s nothing like free money to make investors happy. Third, the entire project is doomed.”
