Thousands protest in Japan against new state secrets bill

“Thousands of people protested in Tokyo against a bill that would see whistleblowing civil servants jailed for up to 10 years. Activists claim the law would help the government to cover up scandals, and damage the country’s constitution and democracy.  About 10,000 people crowded shoulder-to-shoulder, holding banners that read: ‘Don’t take away our freedom.’ Currently, long prison terms only apply to those Japanese who leak classified data from the US military.  PM Shinzo Abe says that the new legislature is extremely important to secure cooperation with Japan’s major ally, the US, as well as other countries.  The data security bill resembles laws targeting whistleblowers in the US.”

Govt Lawyers: Americans Have No Right to Challenge Surveillance

“Government lawyers are demanding that the US District Court immediately throw out an ACLU lawsuit against NSA surveillance, insisting that there is no avenue by which ‘ordinary Americans’ could even theoretically challenge its legality.  The government is arguing that only phone companies could challenge the collection orders, however, and then only in super-secret FISA courts, which have already rubber-stamped the surveillance time and again.  The lawyers are also arguing that the judge himself isn’t qualified to hear questions of ‘national security’ and that he should simply trust the administration’s officials to figure things out on their own, outside of courts.”

Latest Snowden leak reveals NSA’s goal to continually expand

“In a mission statement last year the US National Security Agency described how it would continue to expand its power and assert itself as the global leader in clandestine surveillance, according to a new report based on the Edward Snowden leaks.  The five-page document brought to light Friday by the New York Times reveals the intelligence agency’s intention to ‘aggressively pursue legal authorities and a policy framework mapped more fully to the information age.’ The spy agency sought the ability to trace ‘anyone, anywhere, anytime,’ according to its 2012 mission statement.”

U.S. Prisons Thriving on Jim Crow Marijuana Arrests

“Let’s look at New York City, regarded by many tourists as the hippest city in America, and Chicago, which gave us the first black president:  ‘Since 1997, New York City alone has arrested and jailed more than 600,000 people for possessing marijuana; about 87 percent of the arrests are of blacks and Latinos.  For years, police in New York and Chicago have arrested more young blacks and Latinos for simple marijuana possession than for any other criminal offense whatsoever.’ If you are black or Latino and have gone to any of the relatively few schools that actually teach American history, do you feel that you still live in an America with a Constitution that’s fair to you?”

Gold prices near lows of the year

“Gold has been under pressure since the European Central Bank announced a surprise interest rate cut earlier this month, said Carlos Sanchez, analyst at precious metals firm CPM Group.  But gold prices managed to hold above $1,240 an ounce, which is an important support level for technical traders, said Sanchez.  ‘I think we’re at the lows,’ he said. ‘This is a good buying opportunity for mid to long-term investors.’  Gold has been punished this year as investors pulled money out of safe havens to chase higher returns in the stock market. Stocks have soared to record highs in the latest phase of a nearly five year-old bull market.”
