Medical marijuana an issue of importance for Johnson

“Sen. Don Barrington (R-Lawton), the chairman of the Committee on Public Safety, has refused to allow a hearing on the legalization of marijuana. His reasons are due to special interests like district attorneys, and he has also stated that his church did not favor it.  Interestingly, Barrington also has a private prison in his district, and received over $9,000 in campaign contributions from the private prison industry.  When Red Dirt Report asked Johnson if she felt it would be possible for the legislature to pass a measure legalizing medicinal marijuana in the next 10 years, she asserted that the only way legalization is going to occur is through a ballot initiative.”

Medical marijuana rally slated for Oklahoma Capitol Wednesday

“Wednesday is Medical Marijuana Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol, a topic that’s getting increasing attention as an increasing number of states decriminalize, and in some cases even legalize, the recreational use of marijuana.  The rally will take place inside and outside the Capitol, with several activities slated to occur, including lobbying efforts and training.  Cpl. Mike Griffin, who heads up a TPD Drug Task Force, doesn’t advocate legalization, but says he believes it will happen some day, even in Oklahoma. ‘This is just one guy’s opinion,’ he told KRMG. ‘Do I think it will? Yes. Will it happen before I retire? Probably not.'”

Massachusetts prodded by feds on REAL ID with security restrictions

“Starting in April, Massachusetts residents will be prevented from using their licenses to gain access to some federal buildings — unless, of course, state officials give in and quickly adopt the Homeland Security ‘Real ID’ verification program.  Then, as soon as 2016, the punishment will get more serious: Massachusetts residents will be prevented from boarding commercial aircraft if they do not provide another identity document to security screeners.  It is all part of an effort by Homeland Security to prod states to follow the requirements of the 2005 law that stiffened requirements on driver’s licenses.  In states following Real ID requirements, driver’s licenses feature a star.”

Justice Scalia Thinks US Concentration Camps ‘Will Happen Again’

“Concentration camps just went mainstream in the US.  Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia told law students in Hawaii that the Supreme Court does not uphold the Constitution, and that they should anticipate the court to issue more rulings along the same lines as those enabling the internment of US citizens not charged with a crime, just like as happened during World War II. Why? To answer this question,  Justice Scalia quotes Marcus Tullius Cicero, who said that ‘laws are silent in times of war’. Scalia said the court was wrong, ‘but you are kidding yourself if you think the same thing will not happen again.'”

California company builds 5-foot android robocops

“Weighing in at 300 pounds, the five-foot K5 can patrol a neighborhood and uses a built-in laser to form a 3D map of the surrounding area in 270-degree sweeps. Four built-in cameras, meanwhile, are capable of scanning up to 1,500 license plates a minute.  ‘Data collected through these sensors is processed through our predictive analytics engine, combined with existing business, government and crowdsourced social data sets, and subsequently assigned an alert level that determines when the community and the authorities should be notified of a concern,’ the company’s website states.”

New surveillance technology tracks everyone in an area for hours

“A paramilitary team operated by North Carolina’s Wilson County Sheriff’s Office recently executed what was described as a ‘high risk search warrant’ on a narcotics suspect. The members of the ‘Emergency Response Team,’ clad in black armor, bucket helmets, and balaclavas, found what ‘nearly a pound of marijuana’ – which could be the yield from a single healthy plant – and a single handgun.  A photograph taken by an embedded correspondent for the Wilson Times newspaper showed two of the masked SWAT operators in full military regalia. One of them bore, ‘mid snow and ice, a tactical shield inscribed with a strange device – ‘Defender.'”
