Supreme Court rejects appeal of shoplifter serving life sentence

“The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Monday to review the case of an Oklahoma City woman who received a life sentence in 2009 for shoplifting.  Without comment, the court rejected the appeal of Cecilia Cathleen Rodriguez, whose life sentence was imposed by an Oklahoma County judge because of a long list of previous convictions.  Rodriguez’s appeal was her second to the high court; in 2012, the justices sent the case back to Oklahoma and ordered a review of whether she had received adequate legal assistance when she entered a ‘blind plea’ to charges of stealing two purses from a Dillard’s department store.”

CIA Director Relabelled “Dissidents” As “Terrorists” To Spy On Them

For 500 years, government spying has always aimed at crushing dissent.  Likewise, the U.S. government has long used anti-terror laws to crush dissent and protect the powers-that-be.  As Edward Snowden said: ‘These programs were never about terrorism: they’re about economic spying, social control, and diplomatic manipulation. They’re about power.’  He’s right. And see this.  Indeed, the government arbitrarily labels anyone it doesn’ t like – including American citizens – as ‘terrorists’.”

Speed trap city facing dissolution after mayor caught selling drugs

“You can lay claim to a 1,260-foot stretch of busy highway a mile outside of town and set up one of the nation’s most notorious speed traps. You can use the ticket money to build up a mighty police force — an officer for every 25 people in town — and, residents say, let drugs run rampant while your cops sit out by the highway on lawn chairs, pointing radar guns at everybody who passes by.  Of course, none of those things are illegal. But when you lose track of the money and the mayor gets caught up in an oxy-dealing sting, that’s when the politicians at the state Capitol in Tallahassee take notice.”

Vida Cannabis: Positioned for Powerful Profit Potential

“The trend toward legalization isn’t a blue-sky dream. It is happening NOW. Governments all over the world have thrown in the towel on resisting the trend and now are focused on grabbing the tax revenue it can deliver. Vast fortunes were amassed by the Kennedy and Bronfman families, among others, from the demise of U.S. Prohibition in 1933. And that was a single-country event. Even greater fortunes will be built on the relaxing of the worldwide prohibition of cannabis. We picked our horse in the race – Vida Cannabis Corp. – because in many important ways it is already in the lead.”

Colorado Recreational Weed Sales Top $14 Million In First Month

“The figures represent the tax returns from 59 businesses around Colorado, according to the department.  Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) recently announced that he expects that the combined sales from both legal medical and recreational marijuana in the state will reach nearly $1 billion in the next fiscal year — about $600 million of that is projected to come from just recreational sales. The state stands to collect at least $134 million in taxes and fees.  Although the initial crush of retail pot sales has tapered off since January, sales and tax figures are expected to remain steady with more than 150 recreational marijuana dispensaries now licensed, and more added to that list every month.”

Bill Bonner: Reefer Madness!

Bill-Bonner2

“It’s all about control and money, not freedom. It will be heavily licensed, regulated and taxed. There will be a lot of money in it… it’s like the liquor business when they got rid of prohibition.  If you legalized pot, prices would collapse. Nobody wants that. What they’re really doing is shifting the margins from the smugglers and dope dealers to the government.  You’ll be able to get pot… without worrying about going to jail or associating with shady characters. The quality is much higher than the stuff we smoked in college. And the people in the business – licensed producers, wholesalers and retailers – will make a lot of money. So will the government. Everybody will be happy.”

In sudden announcement, US to give up control of DNS root zone

“In a historic decision on Friday, the United States has decided to give up control of the authoritative root zone file, which contains all names and addresses of all top-level domain names.  The new change is in advance of the upcoming ICANN meeting to be held in Brazil in April 2014. Brazil and other nations have fumed at revelations of American spying on its political leaders and corporations, which were first revealed in September 2013 as the result of documents distributed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.  ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé lauded the decision as ‘historic’ and said that ICANN will be moving toward multi-stakeholder control.”

Jon Stewart calls out Senator Feinstein for CIA hacking hypocrisy

“The moment that a notoriously pro-surveillance member of Congress spent nearly an hour excoriating the CIA for breaking into Senate computers, a Daily Show sketch became inevitable. Jon Stewart doesn’t disappoint. The best reason to watch it, though, is that it’s actually a fantastic rundown of the whole story, from Bush-era torture practices to the CIA ‘assassinating data’ and then blaming IT administrators. If you’re looking to chew through Feinstein’s long, dense presentation, it’s the best appetizer you could possibly get.”

Feinstein accuses CIA of hacking Congress, intimidating staff

“Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee, has accused the CIA of searching Senate computers for copies of an internal agency interrogation report, accusing the CIA of violating both anti-hacking laws and the Constitution. In a speech on the Senate floor this morning, Feinstein corroborated reports made earlier by McClatchy, saying that the CIA had first stonewalled committee members who were trying to investigate its interrogation practices, rifled through files to figure out what they knew, and then turned around and accused them of stealing the report, intimidating staff in the process.”

How to Keep the NSA From Spying Through Your Webcam

“You already know that laptops, desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones are all at risk of being hacked. But did you know that intruders might use the built-in camera to take surreptitious pictures and videos of you and your surroundings or hijack your microphone to eavesdrop on conversations?  The latest story from the Edward Snowden leaks yesterday drives home that the NSA and its spy partners possess specialized tools for doing exactly that. NSA uses a plug-in called GUMFISH to take over cameras on infected machines and snap photos.  Another NSA plug-in called CAPTIVATEDAUDIENCE hijacks the microphone on targeted computers to record conversations.”
