“A former TANF program director has plead guilty to embezzlement and fraud after stealing nearly $300,000 from the federally funded program. Between 2006, when Sandra Marie Sanderville became director, to her dismissal in 2010, Sanderville would overpay TANF beneficiaries, who would then cash the illicit checks and give a portion back to Sanderville. She would also provide checks to people who were not eligible for the program and receive portions back from that as well. Sanderville was able to keep her activities under wraps for four years because she was able to ‘restrict’ access to the records. She continued to receive pay until she was terminated the following year.”
“The self-proclaimed government in Kiev is reportedly planning to cut pensions by 50 percent as part of unprecedented austerity measures to save Ukraine from default. With an ’empty treasury’, reduction of payments might take place in March. Ukraine’s new prime minister, Arseny Yatsenyuk, promised the government would do its best to avoid a default, adding that he expects an EU/IMF economic stabilization package soon. The European Commission offered Ukraine an 11 billion euro loan if Kiev agrees a deal with the IMF. Accepting IMF money will mean many sacrifices for Ukraine’s economy, [such as] increased gas bills, frozen government salaries, and all around budget cuts.”

“Health professionals recommend following a diet low in saturated fat. But a leading US cardiovascular scientist says that adopting such a diet does not curb heart disease or prolong life. In an editorial recently published in the BMJ journal Open Heart, Dr. James DiNicolantonio says the consumption of saturated fat was first criticized back in the 1950s. But Dr. DiNicolantonio says the findings of this research were flawed. He notes that the study author reached his conclusion using data from only six countries, choosing to exclude data from 16 countries that failed to fit his hypothesis. However, Dr. DiNicolantonio says this data ‘led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades to follow.'”

“A top British government aide who helped create 10 Downing Street’s controversial policy to censor online pornography for the majority of British Internet users has resigned from his post on Monday after being arrested last month on charges of possessing child pornography. Patrick Rock, a longstanding Tory adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron, had served as the deputy director of policy. The prime minister’s office confirmed to British press that it had been ‘made aware of a potential offense relating to child abuse imagery’ on February 12, and Rock was arrested the next day at home.”
“One couple’s gold find could mean a jackpot for the IRS. The Northern California couple that found $10 million worth of rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree on their property will likely owe about half the find’s value whether they sell the gold or not. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the find is a taxable event under a 1969 federal court ruling that held a ‘treasure trove’ is taxable the year it was discovered. The report says after all is said and done, about 47 percent will go to state and federal tax, or the top tax rate. Nearly all of the 1,427 coins that were found, dating from 1847 to 1894, were in uncirculated, mint condition.”
