Homeless Veteran Dies In 100 Degree New York Jail Cell

“Psychotropic medications can impair the body’s ability to cool itself by sweating, experts say. That’s a particular concern as the number of mentally ill inmates who take such drugs has risen steadily. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics from 2005, the most recent year available, more than half of all jail and state prison inmates had a mental  health problem. Nationally, the bureau doesn’t track heat-related deaths in jails and prisons. But they do occur.  A report issued last month by the University of Texas School of Law’s Human Rights Clinic found that at least 14 inmates have died from exposure to extreme heat since 2007 in state correctional facilities. ”

Pregnant Sudanese Christian sentenced to die for refusing to convert

“Judge Abaas Al Khalifa on Thursday condemned Meriam Yahia Ibrahim, pronouncing, ‘The court has sentenced you to be hanged till you are dead.’  Ibrahim, raised as a Christian and married to a Christian man, was accused of being a Muslim and rejecting Islam, called ‘apostasy.’ The court followed the rule of Islamic law that the father confers his faith to his children. Ibrahim’s father abandoned her family when she was a young child.  She was ordered to be flogged on a separate charge of adultery, because her marriage is not recognized by the Islamic state. The judge gave Ibrahim, 27, two weeks to convert from Christianity to Islam.  She is being imprisoned with her 20-month-old son.

Proposed Iraqi law would legalize marital rape, child marriage

“A vision of a theocracy in Iraq is seemingly more within reach for these groups now that the U.S. presence has waned; this week’s elections will be the first since the U.S. military troop withdrawal in 2011.  The party proposed similar rules in 2004, after Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, was routed from power and Iraqi politicians began cobbling together interim constitutions and governments.   For Faiza Babakhan, an activist and former parliamentarian, the new law signals an erosion of women’s rights that has left her and other women reminiscing about Iraq under Saddam.”

Jim Rogers: I am sceptical India government will deliver on promises

“Normally, when markets move as per anticipation, one should sell as an expression in financial markets — buy on rumours and sell on news.  If I were an Indian, I would probably sell into this kind of excitement.  I am sceptical about India because I have seen Indian politicians for decades.  Everyone knows that India has been badly managed for decades. There are concerns about inflation, trade deficit, high debt-to-GDP ratio. Whether Modi can solve all these problems, I don’t know, I am still sceptical.  If India makes currency convertible and opens the markets to all investors, where anyone can bring money in and take it out, then only I would get excited.”

Sell in May and Go Away… Then Buy Bombay?

“What’s so great about Modi? Yes, he’s promised a cure for India’s #1 economic problem by ushering in an infrastructure boom, but that hardly makes him special. Promising to build infrastructure in India is like promising to ‘create jobs’ in the US: every candidate does it. The question is whether they can accomplish it. Stifled by India’s world-class bureaucracy, Modi’s predecessors have failed miserably.  If he’s successful in breaking through India’s bureaucratic logjam to clear the way for upgrading its decrepit infrastructure, I think Indian stocks could enter an extended bull market. Allocating a few percent of your portfolio to a stock or two on the Bombay exchange is a good idea.”

U.S. would welcome Modi as India leader despite past visa ban

“Modi was shunned by Western nations for years after the bloodshed in Gujarat, where he has been chief minister since 2001. He was denied a U.S. visa in 2005 under the terms of a 1998 U.S. law which bars entry to foreigners who have committed ‘particularly severe violations of religious freedom.’  Modi’s rise on the national stage, however, and the importance of relations with India, which the United States sees as a key counterbalance to China in Asia, have forced a rethink.  The State Department described the Indian elections as ‘an inspiring example of the power of the democratic process in action’ and stressed their peaceful nature – in spite of the killing of 41 Muslims in the state of Assam.”

New PM Modi Tells India’s Hindu Heartland He’s Doing God’s Work

“‘There’s a lot of work that god has put me on this earth for,’ Modi said yesterday on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi, his constituency, after attending a prayer service at a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and transformation. ‘A lot of it is dirty work, but I am up to the task.’  Opponents of Modi have said he’ll stoke violence between Hindus and Muslims, which has played a defining role in politics since independence. Modi has been accused of failing to stop riots in Gujarat 12 years ago that killed more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, and had prompted the U.S. to deny him a visa.”

Russia halts rocket exports to US, hitting space and military programmes

Russia‘s deputy prime minister, Dmitry Rogozin, has announced it will halt the export of rocket engines crucial to the US military defence and space programmes. The move marks a serious deterioration in US-Russian cooperation in space, which for two decades had remained largely above Earthly politics. It could prove a serious set back for the ailing US space programme.  Although Nasa relies on the Atlas V to launch some of its deep space probes, most are used to put US spy satellites and other classified payloads into space.  The new restrictions will make it difficult for the US to import any of the engines because it will hard to prove the hardware is not destined for a military programme.”

Moscow to suspend American GPS sites on Russian territory from June

“Russia is going to suspend the operation of all American GPS sites on its territory, starting from June 1, said Russia’s deputy PM, Dmitry Rogozin, who is in charge of space and defense industries.  ‘Starting June 1, we will halt the work of those stations on Russian territory,’ Rogozin said.  Rogozin pointed out that American GPS ground stations are located in Russia under an agreement that dates back to 1993 and 2001. ‘Under this agreement there are 11 GPS stations on the territories of 10 [Russian federal] subjects,’ he said.  If negotiations turn out to be fruitless, operation of the 11 American GPS stations in Russia will ‘be permanently terminated’ from September 1, he warned.”

Elon Musk Might Not Be Too Unhappy About Russia’s Space Station Ban

“One person unlikely to be worried about the bans is Elon Musk, who recently said ULA – a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing – has an unfair monopoly on U.S. Air Force rocket launches and could save the Air Force $1bn if the process was opened up to privateers.  Musk’s space venture SpaceX is also pursuing the possibility of private human transport to low orbit using its Dragon spacecraft.  Currently, the US pays Russia $60m per person to fly astronauts to the ISS, according to the UK Telegraph.  Rogozin claimed Russia could still use the ISS for its own purposes.  ‘The Russian segment can exist independently from the American one,’ he said.  ‘The US one cannot.'”
