Spanish Firm Uses Copyright to Silence Ecuador’s Critics

“A shady law firm in Spain called Ares Rights has found a way to take advantage of US law in order to remove content that originated in Ecuador, sending Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notices on behalf of several Ecuadorian state officials, targeting documentaries, tweets, and search results that include images of those officials, alleging copyright infringement. Most of the companies receiving these requests, including Google, Twitter, and Vimeo, have unfortunately responded by automatically removing the content.  Some have re-instated removed works after a successful counter-notice was filed by the uploaders.”

Man who beat NSA in T-shirt parody case wins against Clinton group

“The Ready for Hillary organization, a group that’s laying the groundwork for a potential presidential campaign by Hillary Clinton, has backed down from its demand that a parody T-shirt and related items be removed from an online store.  The T-shirt reads: ‘I’m Ready for Oligarchy,’ a parody of the group’s slogan: ‘I’m Ready for Hillary.’  The maker of the shirt, a Minnesota-based activist named Dan McCall, had previously won a bid to make and sell T-shirts parodying the National Security Agency. Paul Alan Levy, McCall’s attorney, said that he was informed of Ready for Hillary’s intention to drop the demand late Thursday.”

Could Keith Alexander’s Advice Possibly Be Worth $600K a Month?

“Ex-NSA director Keith Alexander has his own consulting company: IronNet Cybersecurity Inc. His advice does not come cheap.  Alexander offered to provide advice to Sifma for $1 million a month, according to two people briefed on the talks. The asking price later dropped to $600,000, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the negotiation was private.  Alexander declined to comment on the details, except to say that his firm will have contracts ‘in the near future.’   SIFMA is the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. Think of how much actual security they could buy with that $600K a month. Unless he’s giving them classified information.”

Deutsche Telekom to follow Vodafone in revealing surveillance

“Mobile companies, unlike social networks, cannot operate without a government-issued licence, and have previously been reluctant to discuss the extent of their cooperation with national security and law enforcement agencies.  But Vodafone broke cover on Friday by confirming that in around half a dozen of the markets in which it operates, governments in Europe and outside have installed their own secret listening equipment on its network and those of other operators.  Under this direct access system, wires suck up traffic at key points in the network, allowing unfettered access to the content of phone conversations and text messages, and in some cases delivering live location data.”

Vodafone reveals existence of secret surveillance wires

“Vodafone has revealed the existence of secret wires that allow government agencies to listen to all conversations on its networks, saying they are widely used in some of the 29 countries in which it operates in Europe and beyond.  The company said wires had been connected directly to its network and those of other telecoms groups, allowing agencies to listen to or record live conversations and, in certain cases, track the whereabouts of a customer.  In Albania, Egypt, Hungary, India, Malta, Qatar, Romania, South Africa and Turkey, it is unlawful to disclose any information related to wiretapping or interception of the content of phone calls and messages including whether such capabilities exist.”

House unexpectedly votes to stop warrantless NSA searches

“By a vote of 293 to 123, a bipartisan coalition in the House voted to ban the National Security Agency from conducting ‘backdoor searches’ on United States citizens, a process that allowed the intelligence community to collect data on Americans without a warrant as long as the official target was a foreigner.  The amendment ‘specifically prohibits the NSA from using information identifying U.S. citizens to search communications data it collects under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.’  Additionally, the House voted to ban the NSA from installing backdoor search capability into the hardware and software of other companies.”

Eric Clapton Cites Security Hassles as Reason He’ll Stop Touring

“There’s just 25 months left to see Eric Clapton on tour. The legendary guitarist says that he’s going to quit the road life when he turns 70 years old because getting from show to show is too much of a pain. ‘The bit on stage, that’s easy,’ he says before insisting he’ll stay active playing around his hometown.  Clapton, who turns 70 on March 30, 2015, says security and immigration officials are two groups of people he’ll be glad to be rid of. ‘I never get it right. I forget to take off my belt, or I have change in my pocket,’ he tells Rolling Stone. ‘Next thing I know, ‘Can you come over here please?’ I just don’t want to do that anymore.'”

Civilian casualties authorized under secret US drone-strike memo

“A secret Obama administration memo disclosed Monday outlines the legal justification for the government’s drone-targeted killing program, a lethal strategy that authorizes the killing of innocents as collateral damage.  The memo (PDF) describes the government’s legal underpinnings for its so-called overseas targeted-killing program where drones from afar shoot missiles at buildings, cars, and people. It began under the George W. Bush administration but was broadened under Obama and now includes the killing of Americans.  The Obama administration fought for years to keep the Justice Department Office of Legal Counsel memo from becoming public.”

Oil wars exploding; Gold surging

“Not only do we have new, dangerous wars exploding — or about to explode — in Ukraine, the Middle East and East Asia … Not only are those wars threatening to spread globally … But we are also beginning to see their impact on global markets.  Just connect the dots: Wars drive oil and gas prices skyward … Surging energy costs drive up inflation, threatening to gut the purchasing power of paper currencies … Scared money flees the regions threatened by wars and revolutions, and … Hundreds of billions of dollars rush into gold.  It’s classic. It’s a proven pattern we’ve seen for centuries. And it’s happening now!”

Is War Part of a Wall Street Party?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The consistent raising of nuclear tensions justifies continued economic reactions in order to keep Western economies stable and on track, which may include further justifications for continued monetary easing.  International tensions also provide a rationale for a ‘flight to safety’ that reinforces the primacy of Western markets, in particular US bonds and equities. The up and down security posture of the West versus Russia (and China) can create alternatively a depression of ‘animal spirits’ and waves of euphoria that can lift markets. Finally, a fluid period of inter-state animosity can provide justifications for an eventual stock market crash that can usher the next phase of economic internationalism.”
