The Questions That Weren’t Answered

“The U.S. economy is hanging by its nails. It still has not pulled itself up over the edge of the cliff we went off six years ago. And now the warmongers would have us step on its fingers again.  The hapless Paul Bremer, who was in charge of the occupation government of Iraq under Bush, is pushing combat forces. Says John McCain, ‘We are now facing an existential threat to the security of the United States of America.’  Really? An existential threat? I can’t be sure, but didn’t he say the same thing in 2002-03?  But before anyone sells Americans another war pig in a poke, it is worth pausing to ask, ‘How did it come to this?'”

Why You Shouldn’t Gamble With Uncle Sam

“Sometimes the IRS changes its mind… with catastrophic results for taxpayers.  Until 2008, FinCEN advised that online poker accounts didn’t need to be reported on the FBAR. In 2009, it shifted gears and declared these accounts to be reportable. Then, in 2011, FinCEN reversed itself again. This written guidance didn’t help John Hom, who gambled online and set up accounts at two online poker companies. He used a third online company to facilitate the transfer of funds to the poker accounts. The IRS assessed civil penalties of more than $45,000. Hom appealed the penalty to a federal district court. But on June 4, 2014, a judge ruled that all three accounts were reportable on the FBAR.”

Jeffrey Tucker: The War Is On You

“Of all the problems that the ruling elite faced at the end of the Cold War, the most pressing was that the American people were dreaming of peace and normalcy, and increasingly intolerant of the overweening cost of being the world’s last superpower.  That was when the bombing began. We watched as people far away were fire bombed and murdered, how a mighty government was brought to its knees, how all the weapons built at our expense for decades could be used to subjugate a whole nation.  That was an ominous display.”

The History Channel’s Mendacious ‘The World Wars’ Propaganda

thelrcblog-5002

“Perhaps the less said about this egregious travesty of historical falsehoods and distortions of facts the better.  It is simply neocon agit-prop featuring ‘the usual suspects’ (Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, McCain, McChrystal, Panetta, etc.) from the unconstitutional, preemptive wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq as ‘expert commentators’ and their court historian Amen corner echo chamber. This is not objective history but advocacy for the unrestrained warfare state in which these war criminals were key participants.  In their attempts to portray a historical continuity from WWI to WWII to the failed wars they presided over — such a continuity exists but not the one they attempt to convey.”

When Obama Told the Truth About Gitmo . . . and Then Forgot

“Obama just sent five Gitmo prisoners back to Afghanistan in exchange for an American soldier who may have deserted. Drudge fills the page with stories.  The entire focus is on the American. What about the five released prisoners, who never received a trial?  Obama is at long last pulling troops out of Afghanistan, yet he is still holding prisoners captured in Afghanistan, who were never given a trial.  If the war is over, shouldn’t we close Guantánamo? ‘Never,’ Republicans say. ‘This is a great way to spend our tax dollars. This is America’s version of Castro’s concentration camps in Cuba. We deserve one, too!'”

Obama Deploys US Troops to Iraq as Insurgents Gain Ground

“Obama has told Congress he will send about 170 of the troops to the U.S. Embassy to secure the scores of Americans still present there. The $700 million fortress is the size of 80 football fields, built to withstand attacks.  Obama is also considering sending in U.S. Special Forces – 100 in all — to help advise Iraqi forces. Those forces, some of which might be sent to Kuwait, could be used for airfield management, security and logistics support, officials said.   If the United States decides to attack, more options are also available. An aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf is capable of launching 40 fighter jets to strike ISIS militants.  Three other ships are also able to launch cruise missiles.”

Marijuana Child-Endangerment Cases Continue Despite Changing Laws

“A Colorado man loses custody of his children after getting a medical marijuana card. The daughter of a Michigan couple growing legal medicinal pot is taken by child-protection authorities after an ex-husband says their plants endangered kids.  And police officers in New Jersey visit a home after a 9-year-old mentions his mother’s hemp advocacy at school.  While the cases were eventually decided in favor of the parents, the incidents underscore a growing dilemma: While a pot plant in the basement may not bring criminal charges in many states, the same plant can become a piece of evidence in child custody or abuse cases.”

Liberty, NORML and Marijuana Legalization vs. Decriminalization

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“There has always been a market for marijuana. In many ways, it’s a product that, for decades, has literally sold itself. When the day comes that state and federal laws allow for the licensed production and commercial distribution of cannabis, it is likely that the majority of the cannabis consuming public will choose that legal, above-ground product over a black market, illicit product. And in that respect, there will be an opportunity for licensed entrepreneurs and businesses, and for the investors backing those entrepreneurs and businesses, to get in at the ground floor of what will certainly be a lucrative market that enjoys consistent high levels of public demand.”

St. Louis Police Attorney Denies Existence of His Own Drug Task Force

“The lengths to which the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was willing to go to avoid providing public records is troubling. Drug Task Forces in Missouri are entrusted with more power and are subject to less accountability than would be expected of typical law enforcement, which further underscores the need for transparency. The shenanigans of the SLMPD demonstrated here fly in the face of the spirit, if not the letter, of Missouri’s Sunshine Law. More than that, it is an affront to good governance that major police departments default to denying the existence of a drug task force when records pertaining to it are requested.”

Europe’s Pain is the World’s Gain

“Last week the ECB announced that it was cutting its headline lending rate to 0.15 percent and taking its deposit rate to negative 0.10 percent. That means banks must pay the ECB to hold their money, a move the ECB hopes will spur lending.  It will also make $545 billion worth of inexpensive loans available to banks with the caveat that they lend more to the private sector. First tranche euro zone banks will be permitted to borrow up to 7% of the value of their corporate loans with additional tranches of funding [on the way].  While the goal of easing is to improve economic conditions at home, the money will ultimately flow to where it can find the greatest returns, as our own experience has shown.”
