Ohio University Considers Mandatory Re-Education Classes For Smokers

“Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.  The ban will outlaw every use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on any part of the 1,850-acre public university campus, reports The Athens News, the local newspaper.  Smokers won’t be able to take refuge in any designated smoking areas, either. The ban is utter and total.  Smoking bans are all the rage at colleges and universities across the country. This year, The College Fix notes, Ohio State, San Diego State and every public college in Georgia have instituted such bans.”

Bankrupt California city facing legalizing marijuana for revenue

“The bankrupt California city of San Bernardino has a new idea for raising revenue – legalize medical marijuana.  Ironically, the plan was spurred by concerns about not having enough resources to crack down on the illegal medical marijuana dealers springing up all over town.  So the city is now looking at legalizing the sellers, and using tax proceeds to enforce the regulations.  Police have reported as many as 20 illegal storefronts in town at any given time, said the city attorney. ‘We have in this city a proliferation – and a lot of cities in California are experiencing it – of illegal medical marijuana dispensaries. These people are defiant and they are opening up these things right and left.'”

Nation’s largest ocean desalination plant goes up near San Diego

“To supporters, the Carlsbad Desalination Plant is a historic engineering marvel. And it is a survivor, having endured six years of government permitting, from the Carlsbad City Council to the California Coastal Commission. Supporters won 14 lawsuits and appeals by environmentalists before finally breaking ground in December 2012.  The San Diego County Water Authority will pay from $2,014 to $2,257 an acre foot for the water, depending on how much it buys. The agency, which provides water to 3.1 million people in San Diego County, signed a 30-year contract agreeing to buy at least 48,000 acre feet a year.  With that guarantee, Poseidon and its investors were able to finance the project.”

Another California man fined for brown grass during water restrictions

“‘I got a warning that says to provide adequate maintenance to (my) lawn or garden by watering, mowing or re-seeding,’ Martin Padilla said.  ‘I got everything done — nothing else to complain about except for watering the grass because the grass is not completely green,’ Padilla said.  But Padilla was still fined, and learned he owes more than $420.  Padilla said he is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  ‘To make that lawn green, I need to use a lot of water, but the water company says if we don’t cut water usage by 20 percent, (we) get a $500 ticket,’ Padilla told KCRA 3. ‘But I’m paying a $429 ticket for not using enough water, so what should I do?'”

California death penalty ruled unconstitutional

“A federal judge declared California’s death penalty unconstitutional Wednesday, saying delays of 25 years or more in deciding appeals and carrying out occasional executions have created an arbitrary and irrational system that serves no legitimate purpose.  The ruling by U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney of Santa Ana was limited to a single case and had no immediate impact on executions statewide, which have been halted by federal courts since 2006 because of multiple problems in lethal injection procedures.  The state has the nation’s largest Death Row, with 748 inmates, and its lowest execution rate, with 13 inmates put to death since 1992.”

After Second Ebola Patient, CDC Preps 20 U.S. Quarantine Camps

“The disease likely arrived via the local practice of hunting for bushmeat, which the impoverished locals regularly engage in, to gather enough to eat.  But there’s growing rumors and suspicion in the region among locals.  They believe that the U.S. may have pruposefully released the disease as some sort of weapons test.  Liberia promised to beef up security after a ebolavirus victim successfully circumvented airport security and boarded a plane to Nigeria.  Back home, [the CDC] issued its highest level of travel warning — Level 3 — urging Americans to avoid travel to the region.  Just in case, it’s already prepping twenty quarantine camps in major cities around the country.”

In trial over OKC bombing evidence, FBI accused of threatening witness

“As a trial over documents and videotape the FBI had from the 1995 bombing that killed 168 ended on Thursday, the man suing the federal government claimed one of his witnesses had been told not to show up — or else.  ‘This is a serious accusation,’ Judge Waddoups said.  He ordered the FBI agent who spoke with Matthews to appear before him next month in a hearing to ferret out the truth.  An FBI lead sheet that had been heavily redacted claims that the ATF and FBI had ‘prior knowledge of the bomb’ and the agencies had attempted to set up a ‘sting operation and did not take the bomb threat seriously.'”

For months, 911 callers got ‘hang up and dial 911’ automated message

“No one suffering from an emergency expects to be greeted by a recording when they dial 911.  Yet 911 callers in Caddo County, Oklahoma were unable to reach a human operator for months in 2013. According to the FCC, Hinton officials explained that ‘in August 2002, the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office specifically declined to accept 911 calls from its Caddo County customers due to a lack of personnel and resources, and that the only feasible means of routing 911 calls was to direct such calls to a live AT&T operator for connection to a list of county emergency offices provided to the live operator by Hinton.’  Hinton was caught unaware when AT&T discontinued the live operator service.”

GameStops Forced To Start Fingerprinting People Who Trade In Games

“GameStop stores in the city of Philadelphia have begun to require customers to provide fingerprint scans if they wish to trade-in their used games. The new requirement is intended to serve as a anti-theft measure that can help local authorities track criminals.  GameStop customers at these locations are no longer allowed to trade-in games if they don’t provide a fingerprint scan. The Philadelphia Police Department told CBS Philadelphia that the fingerprints are uploaded onto the online database Leads Online.  Local customers weren’t happy about the enhanced security measures, saying that it made them feel like they were being treated like criminals.”
