Hungry Judges Less Likely to Grant Parole [2011]

abc_gmahealth_carbs_091112_wg

“The United States judicial system is ostensibly built on laws and hard facts. But new research lends weight to the trope that ‘justice is what the judge ate for breakfast.’  A judge’s willingness to grant a prisoner parole wanes with time after a lunch or snack break, according to an observational study.  Researchers from Columbia University and Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel analyzed more than 1,000 parole decisions made during 50 days by eight experienced judges in Israel. The proportion of favorable rulings fell from about 65 percent to nearly zero during each session separated by the two food breaks, leaping back to 65 percent immediately after the breaks.”

Robber faces murder charge for victim’s shooting of his accomplice

“A Long Beach man whose female accomplice might have been pregnant when she was fatally shot by the owner of a home they broke into was arrested on suspicion of murder in the woman’s death, police said.  In California a person can be charged with their accomplice’s death if it occurs during the commission of a crime.   Police say Adams and Miller attacked Greer, 80, after he walked in on them burglarizing his home in the 3900 block of Country Club Drive in the upscale Bixby Knolls neighborhood Tuesday night. But when  Greer produced a .22-caliber handgun, they fled. Greer told KNBC he chased the pair and shot Miller twice in the back in the alley, then pulled her body back onto his lot.”

Homeless mom arrested for leaving children in car during job interview

“Shanesha Taylor was arrested for leaving her two children, then six months and two years old, in a car with the windows cracked and the fan blowing while she was interviewing for a job at a Scottsdale, Ariz., insurance agency for 69 minutes. It was about 71 degrees.  When she came out, the Dodge Durango that had sometimes served as her home was surrounded by police.  Crowdsourcing fundraisers worked quickly to gather more than $100,000 for Taylor and circulated a Change.org petition urging Maricopa County prosecutor Bill Montgomery to drop the charges against her. The petition garnered more than 57,000 signatures. Montgomery has said he will not drop the charges.”

S.C. mom jailed, facing prison for letting daughter play alone in park

“Plenty of working parents can relate to the dilemma Debra Harrell faced when her 9-year-old daughter asked to play unsupervised in a park this summer. How do you find the time and money for child care when school is out?   Harrell’s answer to that question got her arrested. She spent 17 days in jail, temporarily lost custody of her girl, thought she lost her job, and still faces 10 years in prison if convicted of felony child neglect.  South Carolina criminalizes leaving a child at ‘unreasonable risk of harm affecting the child’s life, physical or mental health, or safety.’ But the law offers no specifics on when a child can be left alone without supervision, giving police and prosecutors wide discretion.”

Florida mom arrested after letting 7-year-old walk to the park alone

“After letting her 7-year-old son walk from their home to a park to play, a Florida mother faces up to five years in jail for child neglect.  Nicole Gainey, 34, was arrested on July 26 after her son, Dominic, was found by police alone in a park less than a half-mile from her Port St. Lucie home.  According to the report, Gainey told the officer that she let her son go to the park alone once or twice a week.  The arresting officer said that Gainey had failed to provide her son with care and supervision by allowing him to cross the street and go to the park alone.  Gainey was arrested on a felony child neglect charge and taken to jail.”

NYPD drags 48-year-old naked woman into hallway as neighbors protest

“The NYPD officers were responding to a domestic violence 911-call made from the Brownsville apartment building. However, according to the Daily News, they did not know the apartment number. After hearing shouts from Stewart’s apartment they banged on the door at 11:45 PM. According to the Daily News, Stewart told the police they had the wrong apartment and attempted to close the door. Denise Stewart was then dragged by the NYPD cops into the hallway.  Neighbors captured part of the arrest on video, which shows male officers struggling to subdue the woman, and Stewart calling for her oxygen.  The NYPD allegedly arrived at Stewart’s apartment by mistake.”

A Fish Story

“What do the former employees of Enron and I have in common? According to the Department of Justice, we’re both guilty of the same crime. They spent their nights purging documents in order to hide massive financial fraud. I was accused of disposing of several purportedly undersized red grouper into the Florida surf from which I caught them.  Nearly three years later, the federal government charged me with the destruction of evidence—yes, fish—to impede a federal investigation. I was subsequently arrested at my home. I have been blacklisted by boat owners who fear federal investigations similar to mine. I am now unable to make a living doing what I love to do.”

We’re All Criminals and Outlaws in the Eyes of the American Police State

“As with most things, if you want to know the real motives behind any government program, follow the money trail. When you dig down far enough, as I document in my book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, you quickly find that those who profit from Americans being arrested are none other than the police who arrest them, the courts which try them, the prisons which incarcerate them, and the corporations, which manufacture the weapons and equipment used by police, build and run the prisons, and profit from the cheap prison labor.”

US officials: New leaker compromised national security after Snowden

“The United States government has concluded that a new leaker has been supplying members of the media with classified documents, CNN reported on Tuesday.  Sources asides, the latest documents cast a rare light on the US government’s use of ever-expanding federal watchlists.  More than 40 percent of the 680,000 individuals listed in the US Terrorist Screening Database shared with local police agencies, contractors and governments around the globe have ‘no recognized terrorist group affiliation.’  Additionally, the documents reveal that the number of people barred from flying in the US — entrees on the infamous ‘no-fly list’ — has increased 10-times since 2009 to a total of around 47,000.”

Big changes planned for Iraqi stock markets

“The Iraq Stock Exchange (ISX) is currently in the process of upgrading to the latest Nasdaq trading platform after signing an agreement with Nasdaq OMX in June 2013. The new platform, currently used by more than 25 exchanges globally, is capable of supporting multiple asset classes, although the ISX concentrates mainly on cash equities.  With 84 listed companies, the ISX has a market capitalization of $9.5 billion to serve a population of 30 million, an amount substantially smaller than other oil-dependent markets in the Gulf Cooperation Council, which range in size from $208 billion in the United Arab Emirates to $479 billion in Saudi Arabia.”
