Houston schools discuss child’s ‘Nerf gun’ suspension

“After a couple of days into the school year, fourth grader Ramsey McDonald of Warner Robins was given what he thought was a fun assignment.  Bring in some of your favorite toys to talk about.  ‘They were trying to get the kids to know each other,’ his father, Scott McDonald said.  The Miller Elementary School student told his father Friday night he was going to bring in his iPad and a couple of toys.  His father didn’t think much about it and said ‘OK.’  McDonald learned it wasn’t OK when he received a call from the school Tuesday. ‘They told me my son brought a weapon to school and they asked me if I was aware,’ McDonald said Wednesday.”

Mom Arrested for Letting Kid Play in Lego Store While She Shopped

“Yesterday afternoon, a mom in Long Island, New York, was arrested for leaving her 7-year-old at the Roosevelt Field Mall LEGO Store for an hour and 20 minutes while she shopped elsewhere in the mall.  The story mentions that the the mother, Patricia Juarez, was also charged with petty larceny stemming from a previous warrant. Larceny is a real crime, of course. Letting your kid play by himself in the LEGO Store is not. I would really love the police to explain how endangered this child actually was, in a public place, surrounded by employees, shoppers, and security (and LEGO superheroes!).”

Philly mom faces jailtime due to New Jersey’s strict gun laws

“The single mother of two young children was arrested on weapons charges that could send her to prison for three years.  The charges came after Allen told the officer she had a handgun in her vehicle and has a concealed carry permit issued by Pennsylvania. But that license carries no legal weight in New Jersey, which has some of the nation’s strictest gun control laws.  Allen’s case and others like it have highlighted the legal problems often faced by out-of-state residents who bring weapons to New Jersey, unaware of the rules that govern how guns can be brought into and transported throughout the state.”

Another Cop Shoots Himself Instead of the Dog He was Trying to Kill

“In North New Jersey, Bloomfield, a police officer shot himself instead of an ‘attacking canine’ he was trying to kill with the firearm he apparently did not know how to use.  This is hilarious beyond words to those who keep up with these incidents, because this exact same thing happened recently in Riverside County, California.  Predictably, the officer was apparently too embarrassed to allow anyone to release his name, so we don’t know who he is exactly. Essex County’s Prosecutors office released bare minimum details, also predictably, and the officer is pretty much safe.”

By the Numbers: How Dangerous Is It to Be a Cop?

“In the name of the War on Terror and the War on Drugs, the federal government has provided thousands of pieces of military-grade body armor, mine-resistant armored personnel carriers, assault rifles, grenade launchers, helicopters, and night-vision goggles to local police and sheriffs. Almost every county in America has received equipment from these programs.  But has policing really become so dangerous that we need to arm peace officers like an invading army? The answer is no. It’s never been safer to be a cop.  Officer fatalities peaked in 1930 at 297, spiking again in the 1970s before steadily declining since.  2013 was the safest year for American policing since 1875.”

Prison warden that botched Arizona execution hired by OK D.O.C.

“Oklahoma’s Department of Corrections has hired the former warden of an Arizona prison where a lengthy botched execution occurred last month, records show.  On July 23, Joseph Rudolph Wood’s execution at the Florence prison took nearly two hours while the inmate snorted and gasped for breath. Wood was injected 15 times with an experimental combination of drugs, including midazolam, records show.  Midazolam is the same drug Oklahoma used for the first time in its April 29 botched execution of Clayton Lockett. Critics have said the drug does not qualify as a true anesthetic and has now been used in three executions that took substantially longer than typical lethal injections.”

The FBI just used facial recognition to catch a fugitive of 14 years

“Neil Stammer speaks nearly a dozen languages, so when he fled the country using false papers, it left law enforcement with few clues as to where he might be. The case languished for 14 years until this January, when a new facial recognition system found a face that matched Stammer’s. The Diplomatic Security Service had his face on file under the name Kevin Hodges, thanks to a recent visa application to the US Embassy in Nepal. The DSS contacted the FBI, and a few months later Stammer was in custody. In Stammer’s case, both of the photos were passport-style photos taken from close range, with the subject directly facing the cameras.”

New York knows where your license plate goes

“In a crime-fighting tactic that sets civil libertarians’ teeth on edge, police in Monroe County and other urban counties across New York state are collecting and archiving tens of millions of records that track vehicle movement. The records are stored in a series of loosely connected secure computer servers, accessible directly or indirectly by police from one end of New York to the other and by federal Homeland Security officials. Each of the records, which are gathered by license plate cameras mounted on police cars or at fixed locations, includes a photograph and the time and place that a particular vehicle was imaged. Strung together, the records can paint a picture of where a person has traveled.”

Man gets ticket for running stop sign, dashcam video shows he didn’t

“Mr. Kratofil happened to have a dashboard camera recording as he was driving through Jefferson Hills. In the video, you can see that he comes to a complete stop. KDKA even brought the video to driving instructor Jim Clair, who confirmed that Mr. Kratofil hadn’t rolled through the intersection. When the station brought the video to Jefferson Hills Police Chief Gene Roach, he viewed it and decided to ask the police officer responsible for writing the ticket to withdraw it. However, Chief Roach did defend his officers. ‘He defends his officers, saying technically…the law says you stop at the stop sign, you move forward, stop again, until you can see that the intersection is clear and then you go.'”

Video Killed Trust in Police Officers

“Of course young people growing up with YouTube will trust police officers less. The many videos of brutality don’t lie—and they confirm that, sometimes, cops do lie.  Even more often, they hold their tongues.  Any doubt that excessive force by law enforcement is a widespread problem can now be laid to rest in a single hour with nothing more than access to YouTube.  Start here or here or here. Or here. Or here. Or here. If you keep searching, you’ll come to the conclusion that this sort of violence is epidemic long before you run out of video confirmation. Then remember the vast majority of these incidents are never videotaped.”
