Hackers Can Use Your Car to Kill You

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The FBI denied investigating Hastings. Maybe the journalist who took down one top general and elevated another just happened to fall asleep at the wheel. We can’t know for sure what happened to Hastings. We do know for sure that it is now technically possible to take control of a vehicle and make it do undesirable things, like crash into palm trees at high speed. The hackers profiled in the Wired report are surely not the only ones with this ability. It’s no stretch to imagine that CIA and Pentagon experts have the same skill. Would they use it to silence a critic? Maybe they already did.”

Gold: It’s Time to Buy

“The US dollar is on a tear. Digital currencies like Bitcoin are eating away at gold’s popularity. Chinese consumers are selling. Unprecedented appetite for high-risk investments.  Who needs gold when you can get rich buying a startup company?  Under the circumstances, it’s easy to see why the talking heads see only disaster ahead for gold. But I think they’re missing the point.  As the anti-dollar, when the dollar finally corrects – and it will – gold prices will recover, and the dollar will resume its 100-year plunge in value.  And that’s far from the only reason to buy gold. Unlike bank accounts, governments can’t ‘bail in’ gold.”

A Serious Red Flag

“This pattern of new highs in stocks coupled with new lows in bonds has happened during 48 sessions in the past year. The chart above shows such divergences in blocks since 1987. As you can see, the only time frame that was anywhere near the current abundance of divergences was 1999-2000. Back then, the total first reached the current level of 48 in July 1999. The S&P 500 dropped more than 13% over the next several months, but the bull market didn’t end for more than a year later. Other such spikes in the divergences came just before the crash of 1987 and before a very rocky phase of the market in 1991.”

950 million Android phones can be hijacked by malicious text messages

“Almost all Android mobile devices available today are susceptible to hacks that can execute malicious code when they are sent a malformed text message or the user is lured to a malicious website.  The vulnerability resides in an Android code library that processes several widely used media formats. The most serious exploit scenario is the use of a specially modified text message using the multimedia message (MMS) format. All an attacker needs is the phone number of the vulnerable Android phone. From there, the malicious message will surreptitiously execute malicious code on the vulnerable device with no action required by the end user and no indication that anything is amiss.”

Argentine small businesses turning to bitcoin

“The prolonged use of capital controls in Argentina since 2011 has wreaked havoc for businesses operating in South America’s second-largest economy.  Under the leftist government of President Cristina Fernández, no immediate change is expected in Argentina’s complicated economic conditions, which have seen the use of bitcoin more than double over the past year, mainly among small businesses.  Recent raids on currency trading houses and new powers for the national spy agency to prevent speculative attacks pushed the peso’s black market value this week to its lowest levels since Argentina defaulted last year on its foreign debt for the second time this century.”

Chinese regulator vows share support after markets tumble 8.5% in a day

“China said on Monday it was prepared to buy shares to stabilize the stock market and avert ‘systemic risks’, after major indices plunged more than 8 percent in the biggest one-day fall since 2007.  The securities regulator also said market authorities would deal severely with anyone engaged in the ‘malicious shorting of stocks’, in Beijing’s latest attempt to stave off a full-blown market crash.  Monday’s slump, amid growing doubts about the strength of the world’s second biggest economy, shattered three weeks of relative calm as a barrage of support measures helped stabilize values following a sharp sell-off that started in mid-June.”

China Has Biggest One-Day Stock Crash Since 2007

“China’s stocks tumbled amid concern a three-week rally sparked by unprecedented government intervention is unsustainable.  Monday’s retreat shattered the sense of calm that had fallen over mainland markets last week and raised questions over the viability of government efforts to prop up share prices as the economy slows.  The Shanghai gauge had rebounded 16 percent from its July 8 low through Friday as officials went to extreme lengths to halt a rout that erased $4 trillion from the nation’s equities. Officials allowed more than 1,400 companies to halt trading, banned major shareholders from selling stakes and armed a state-run financing vehicle with more than $480 billion to support the market.”

Stop CISA, Broad “Cybersecurity” Surveillance Legislation

EFF-awards-Apple-Google-perfect-privacy-scores-300x2071

“How do you kill a zombie bill like CISA? Grassroots action. That’s why EFF and over a dozen other groups are asking you to join us in a Week of Action to Stop CISA.  The Senate is likely to vote on the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA) in the coming weeks, and only you can help us stop it.  CISA is fundamentally flawed because of its broad immunity clauses for companies, vague definitions, and aggressive spying powers. Combined, they make the bill a surveillance bill in disguise. The bill may even make things worse for Internet users in several ways. That’s why we’re launching a week of action to make sure Congress is getting the message loud and clear:  CISA must not pass.”

Pakistan bans BlackBerry messaging, e-mail for “security reasons”

“The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a directive to mobile phone network operators to shut down access to BlackBerry Enterprise Services for all mobile customers by November 30. The new order is ‘for security reasons,’ a PTA spokesperson told The Guardian.  The order comes just six days after Privacy International issued a report warning that Pakistan’s intelligence agencies are ramping up electronic surveillance efforts. The ongoing battle with the Pakistani Taliban and other insurgents has been used as justification for an increasingly broad surveillance campaign by Pakistan’s intelligence community.”

Butt dialers beware: If you don’t lock your phone, it’s OK to eavesdrop

“The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that if you accidentally call someone and don’t take reasonable steps to prevent it, you don’t have an expectation of privacy if that person listens in.  Kentucky executive James Huff accidentally called his assistant for over 90 minutes—and she listened in on an in-person conversation he was having. In this case, the court specifically found that Huff could not sue the assistant for violating a federal wiretap law. This was largely because Huff was aware of steps that he could have taken to prevent a pocket dial, such as locking the phone.”
