Taxis on Las Vegas Strip go idle in protest of Uber

“Dozens of taxi drivers parked their cabs and instead took to the Las Vegas Strip sidewalk today to protest the arrival of Uber and the disastrous effect drivers said it would have on their livelihoods.  The protest was organized by drivers from the Industrial, Technical and Professional Employees Union Local 4873 and took place on a sidewalk in front of Caesars Palace for about two hours.  Although many drivers who participated were on the clock and supposed to be on the roads, they won’t be subject to discipline from Yellow Checker Star because the protest is protected as a union-related activity.”

Berkeley’s new soda tax panel begins allocating seized funds

A new Berkeley ‘panel of experts’ charged with allocating money collected from the city’s recently implemented soda tax convened for the first time Tuesday night, electing Jennifer Brown and Xavier Morales as chair and vice chair, respectively.  Brown, a parent and soda tax activist, and Morales, executive director of the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, will lead the nine-person panel, officially titled the ‘Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Product Panel of Experts,’ in bi-monthly or monthly meetings that will establish the direction of funding from Berkeley’s new sugar-sweetened beverage tax, which was approved by voters in November.  The soda tax had brought in $116,000 in its first month.”

Don’t Agree with the Mayor’s Politics? No Permits for You!

“Boston mayor Martin Walsh gives Donald Trump the Chick-Fil-A rush over his immigration opinions. If Donald Trump ever wants to build a hotel in Boston, he’ll need to apologize for his comments about Mexican immigrants first, the Hub’s mayor said.  ‘I just don’t agree with him at all,’ Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh told the Herald yesterday.  ‘I think his comments are inappropriate. And if he wanted to build a hotel here, he’d have to make some apologies to people in this country.'”

IRS Agents Rob Convenience Store

“In June 2014, the government seized Ken Quran’s entire bank account—more than $150,000. This was money that Ken worked for years to earn, and that he was counting on for his retirement. Ken had no prior warning before the government seized the account. The government told him they were taking the money because he withdrew cash from the bank in amounts under $10,000.”

U.S. presidential election already fueled by $377 million

“The major parties’ top presidential candidates in the fundraising race – Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Jeb Bush – are collecting cash in the huge amounts needed to fuel the extensive political organizations they are building for the 2016 campaign.  Clinton’s campaign is spending money at a rapid clip, according to initial fundraising reports filed Wednesday with federal regulators.  The former first lady and front-runner in the Democratic race has paid out 40 percent of the $47 million in donations that she amassed by the end of June, employing some 364 people and building infrastructure across the country in preparation for next year’s general election.

Venture Capital Investment Close to Dot-Com Era

“Venture capital investment in U.S. startups rose 24% in the second quarter to $19.19 billion, nearly matching levels last seen in the dot-com era, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.  Total investment in the first half of 2015 was $35.9 billion, more than the $35.7 billion deployed into U.S. venture-backed companies in all of 2013.  The number of deals in the second quarter (1,034) actually declined a little compared with the same period of 2014, Dow Jones said in its latest VC report, but that reflected the super-sized investments going to substantial ‘unicorn’ companies such as Uber Technologies and Airbnb.”

Gold price falls to five-year low on US rate rise talk

“The gold price has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years as talk of a US interest rate rise has led investors to sell the precious metal.  Gold closed 2.5% lower at $1,104.60 an ounce in London, having earlier fallen below $1,100 an ounce for the first time since March 2010.  The gold price is now more than 40% below its August 2011 peak.  The stronger US economy has led investors to expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this year.  The expectations have led investors to gradually sell gold – a perceived safe haven investment in times of crisis – to invest elsewhere.  Other commodities have also fallen, with the price of platinum down 5% – its weakest level since the crisis.”

The Total Failure Of Gun Control Captured In One Photo

“The bullets that shattered the glass in more than a dozen places around the gun-free zone sign did not heed its commands.  In addition to ignoring the sign designating the area as a gun-free zone, the terrorist shooter also appears to have illegally obtained his firearms. In other words, the gun control regime not only failed to prevent the terrorist from obtaining his firearms, it also failed to prevent him from possessing them in a gun-free zone. The gun ban did, however, dissuade law-abiding Marines from carrying firearms that they could’ve used to protect themselves.”

Government IT official with fake degree ran law enforcement data systems

“The Department of the Interior’s computer systems played a major role in the breach of systems belonging to the Office of Personnel Management, and DOI officials were called before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday to answer questions about the over 3,000 vulnerabilities in agency systems discovered in a penetration test run by Interior’s Inspector General office. But there was one unexpected revelation during the hearing: a key Interior technology official who had access to sensitive systems for over five years had lied about his education, submitting falsified college transcripts produced by an online service.”
