Drone drops drugs into Ohio prison yard, inmate brawl ensues

“It’s not quite the drone-delivery business model that Amazon is planning to offer.  But a drone carrying heroin, marijuana, and tobacco dropped its payload over a prison yard crowded with inmates, causing a brief melee before authorities stamped out the brawl with pepper spray, according to ODRC.  Local media reported Tuesday that the July 29 melee at the Mansfield Correctional Institution began moments after a drone let loose with the goods. At least nine inmates began fighting over the package while other inmates rushed toward the brawl.  None of the inmates are believed to have gotten away with the 65.4 grams of marijuana, 6.6 grams of heroin and 144.5 grams of tobacco.”

US War on Your Passport Continues

“Buried inside the US highways funding bill is a provision to revoke or deny issuance of a US passport to anyone who has a large outstanding tax debt to the US Internal Revenue Service.  As can be seen from the summary, this measure threatening to imprison Americans within (or outside) US borders is simply viewed as a means by which to raise revenue. The hoped-for increase in revenue coming from this threat is considered an ‘offset’ to the money being spent on the highway bill — in other words the threat to imprison US citizens within their own country or freeze them out is considered appropriate incentive to force them to pay what the government claims it is owed.”

Lawmakers Vote to Let Obama Take Your Passport Without Trial

“The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to give the Obama administration the unilateral power to strip you of your passport and right to travel without a trial or even criminal charges. The scheme does not even include a way to challenge your status as a non-person involuntarily trapped inside U.S. borders on orders from the secretary of state. Lawmakers, some of whom could themselves be caught in the dragnet along with myriad administration officials, praised the effort as a way to stop alleged terrorists from travelling. But critics said it was yet another attack on the fundamental rights of Americans, such as due-process protections, and that it must be resisted.”

Ron Paul: Do We Need to Bring Back Internment Camps?

10182011_Ron_Paul_article

“Last week, Retired General Wesley Clark, who was NATO commander during the US bombing of Serbia, proposed that ‘disloyal Americans’ be sent to internment camps for the ‘duration of the conflict.’ Discussing the recent military base shootings in Chattanooga, TN, in which five US service members were killed, Clark recalled the internment of American citizens during World War II who were merely suspected of having Nazi sympathies. He said: ‘back then we didn’t say ‘that was freedom of speech,’ we put him in a camp.’  He called for the government to identify people most likely to be radicalized so we can ‘cut this off at the beginning.’ That sounds like ‘pre-crime’!”

U.S. General Spits on Constitution

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“General Clark doesn’t otherwise fit in the right wing, law-and-order camp. He made a brief presidential bid in 2004 on the Democratic side and was very critical of the Bush administration’s anti-terror tactics and Middle East interventions. Yet now he wants to round up and imprison radical Muslims. This demonstrates that politicians across the spectrum threaten civil liberties. They differ only on the details. Second, he floated his argument on the supposedly ‘progressive’ MSNBC network. The interviewer didn’t question the idea, either. Truly professional journalists are usually quick to notice threats to freedom of speech – or at least in the past. Not this time.”

Ron Paul’s Foreign Policy of Peace Is Central to the Message of Freedom

“Ron calls upon the peoples of the world to resist their governments’ calls to war and to refuse to take part in violent conflict. ‘If the authoritarians continue to abuse power in spite of constitutional and moral limits,’ he writes, ‘the only recourse left is for the people to go on strike and refuse to sanction the wars and thefts. Deny the dictators your money and your bodies…. The more this is a worldwide movement, the better.’ When people read Swords into Plowshares generations from now – and they will – they will marvel that such a man actually served in the US Congress, and defied every campaign of war propaganda right on the House floor.”

Sheldon Richman: No ‘Compensation’ to Israel for Iran Deal

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Why does Israel deserve compensation (in addition to its $3 billion in U.S. aid every year)? If anything, Israel should compensate American taxpayers!  Iran is not — and was not going to become — a nuclear threat. American and Israeli intelligence have said so repeatedly.  But even if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were right about Iran’s intentions, he should be rejoicing at the agreement, under which Iran will get rid of nearly all of its enriched uranium and two-thirds of its centrifuges.  What did Iran get in return for those concessions? Iranian money frozen since the 1979 Islamic revolution will be released and the economic warfare perpetrated by the U.S. will eventually be ended.”

Rand Paul Endorses Military Action Against Iran

“This is in some respects the worst position Paul could take. He acknowledges that attacking Iran won’t actually prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon if that is what their government is intent on doing, but he still backs military action for the sake of ‘prevention.’ More to the point, Paul is endorsing preventive–and therefore unnecessary–war as an acceptable and appropriate policy. If there are still any Paul supporters that have been trying to find a silver lining in the senator’s increasingly hawkish foreign policy positions, this should be enough to persuade them to stop trying.”

Italy to invest $2bn in Iran projects as Tehran gets back to business

“Italy and Iran have signed a deal which could see investment in Iranian projects worth $2 billion. The agreement aims at reviving trade and economic ties between the countries after Western sanctions against Tehran are removed.  The countries plan joint industrial, construction and infrastructure projects, and have already agreed on expanding commercial transactions and promoting relations. The Italian bodies signed a memorandum of understanding in Tehran with Iran’s economy ministry and central bank.  The parties expect a €3-billion increase in Italian exports to Iran in the next three years, mostly in the mechanical engineering, energy and transport sectors.”

Iran offers state assets to foreigners in investment drive

Iran offered to sell state assets to foreigners, said it would cut the government’s role in the economy and pledged a tight monetary policy as it sought to attract billions of dollars of investment from abroad after over a decade of isolation.  The package was strikingly pro-market – many of the policies would not have been out of place in a centre-right European government. If implemented, they could move Iran’s economy well beyond the tight restrictions and heavy state involvement that followed its 1979 Islamic Revolution.  With a young, well-educated population of just under 80 million and some of the world’s largest energy reserves, Iran looks likely to provide huge investment opportunities.”
