Jacob Hornberger: Regime Change is the Root of Evil in Syria

hornberger1

“Several years ago the George W. Bush regime and the Assad regime entering into a rendition-torture partnership by which the CIA shipped a Canadian citizen named Mahar Arar to Syria to have him tortured. The CIA was convinced that Arar was a terrorist but was reluctant to torture a confession out of him. So the CIA turned to its deep-state counterparts in Syria to get the confession. After a year of brutal torture, it was finally determined that Arar was an innocent man. The Syrians released him and he’s now back living in Canada.  So, why the urge to initiate a regime-change operation against the U.S. government’s former partner in the war on terrorism?”

NATO Vows Biggest Buildup against Russia since Cold War

“In particular, Washington and its NATO allies have sought to turn a pair of alleged brief incursions by Russian warplanes across Syria’s northern border into Turkish airspace last weekend as an effective act of war.  ‘NATO is ready and able to defend all allies, including Turkey against any threats,’ NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters as he entered the meeting. He added that NATO was prepared to deploy troops to Turkey and had already taken steps to increase the alliance’s ‘capacity’ and ‘preparedness’ to do so.  The magnification of the alleged violations of Turkish airspace into a confrontation between Moscow and the Western alliance has been driven mainly by Washington.”

Marco Rubio Cites NATO Alliance: We Must Defend Turkey

“‘It’s important for us to be very clear that we will respond and defend Turkey if they come under assault from the Russians,’ he said. ‘Otherwise the entire NATO alliance comes into question.’  A strong signal of support, Rubio stated, would stop the Russians from testing the alliance. He added that he fully expected an international incident such as this one as a consequence of Russia conducting military operations in the Middle East. ‘My sense is that the Russians would not test it, they do not have the capabilities to confront the NATO alliance particularly the United States or even the Turks for that matter,’ he said.”

Does fear make Americans stupid?

ddc-header1

“Terrorists strike, people feel fear, and the terrorists win. This is foolish. More Americans are killed by their cars or bathtubs, but you don’t fear those things. You shouldn’t fear terrorism either. Fear has been bad for America.  Every time the public feels afraid the politicians do something stupid. For example: We felt fear about 9-11 so we imposed the Patriot Act and the TSA on ourselves.  We felt fear about supposed weapons of mass destruction, and so we invaded Iraq. That invasion was the petri dish for ISIS.  Now we’re afraid of ISIS. So that means we must be on the verge of doing something else idiotic. Please refuse to participate in the stupidity. Instead, actively oppose it.”

Majority Views NSA Phone Tracking as Acceptable Anti-terror Tactic [2013]

“Currently 62% say it is more important for the federal government to investigate possible terrorist threats, even if that intrudes on personal privacy. Just 34% say it is more important for the government not to intrude on personal privacy, even if that limits its ability to investigate possible terrorist threats.  These opinions have changed little since an ABC News/Washington Post survey in January 2006. Currently, there are only modest partisan differences in these opinions: 69% of Democrats say it is more important for the government to investigate terrorist threats, even at the expense of personal privacy, as do 62% of Republicans and 59% of independents.”

Supreme Court declines to require a warrant to get cell site data

“Cell-site tracking has become extremely important to crime fighting in the wake of the high court’s 2012 ruling that they need a warrant to place GPS trackers on vehicles. Equally important, in all the cases on the cell-site location tracking, the government argues that cell-site records are not constitutionally protected. Instead, the authorities maintain that they are business records that the telcos may hand over if the government asserts that reasonable grounds exist to believe the data is relevant to an investigation.”

IRS Says You Owe Tax? Congress Will Take Your Passport Starting January 1

“House and Senate conference committee members worked this week on putting together a final version of the funding bill — the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act (HR 22) — that would then be voted on in both houses of Congress. The conference committee can be expected to produce a bill including the passport denial and revocation provision given that such a provision was included in the bill’s versions already passed in the House and Senate. ‘The list of affected taxpayers will be compiled by the Internal Revenue Service using a threshold of $50,000 of unpaid federal taxes, including penalties and interest, which would be adjusted for inflation,’ predicts the WSJ.”

Terrorists win: European Union to crack down on Bitcoin post Paris

“The same draft document that includes a crackdown on Bitcoin is said to also include a plan ‘to curb more effectively the illicit trade in cultural goods,’ presumably a reference to antiquities smuggled out of ISIS held territories and sold on the black market for a profit.  Bitcoin’s role in the Paris terrorist attacks isn’t entirely certain, despite the fact that the Ghost Security Group suggested earlier this week that Bitcoin may have been used to finance the attacks. It may be cliched to say cracking down on anything as a result of terrorism is a case of letting the terrorists win, but without question the proposal by the European Union precisely fits this definition.”

Pentagon: 50% more drone flights by 2019, adding China, Russia coverage

“The military is doubling down on drones. The expansion would give the Pentagon even more reconnaissance data, expanding capacity in new programs from the Army and special contractors.  Only a vanishingly small percentage of the flights involve actual strikes, but they’ll provide a crucial first step for strikes in new regions, which will require reconnaissance feeds for targeting and command support. Notably, many of the future reconnaissance efforts are intended to monitor operations in Ukraine and the South China Sea. Thus far, drone strikes have been largely confined to Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.”
