Greek protesters lob petrol bombs in Athens during Obama visit

“In a separate protest in the northern city of Thessaloniki, protesters burned a U.S. flag.  The visit comes only two days before the anniversary of a bloody 1973 student revolt that helped topple the 1967-1974 military junta which was backed by the U.S. government.  Obama, who will be succeeded in January by Donald Trump, arrived in Greece on Tuesday on his last foreign tour as president of the United States.”

Trump Presidency Could Be Worth $14 Billion to His Troubled Lender Deutsche Bank

Donald Trump’s election has likely given a massive lifeline to Deutsche Bank, the German financial firm that has been rocked recently by rumors that they would have to pay a $14 billion fine to the Justice Department over crisis-related mortgage abuses.  That money is unlikely to ever be imposed, now that one of Deutsche Bank’s biggest borrowers – Trump – will soon be sitting in the White House.”

Surrounded By Protesters, Trump Backpedals On Obamacare Repeal, Clinton Prosecution

Tens of thousands of protesters swarmed Trump Tower, held back by barricades, while billionaire and president-elect Donald Trump continued to mull over his cabinet selections. Earlier, Trump had stated that although his campaign had promised to repeal Obamacare entirely, it would instead be repealed and replaced with a new law that maintains Obamacare’s key provisions: namely, that insurance companies would be required to cover individuals with pre-existing conditions and to cover young adults on their parents’ policies until the age of 26.

Trump also indicated that his campaign’s promise to prosecute former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for numerous instances of alleged official misconduct during her State Department tenure would be considered a low priority.

Nuclear weapon missing since 1950 ‘may have been found’

“The story of the lost nuke has mystified military historians for more than half a century. In 1950, American B-36 Bomber 075 crashed near British Columbia on its way to Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. The plane was on a secret mission to simulate a nuclear strike and had a real Mark IV nuclear bomb on board to see if it could carry the payload required.  Several hours into its flight, its engines caught fire and the crew had to parachute to safety. Out of a 17-person crew, five didn’t make it.”

Radical Islam: Byproduct of U.S. policies dating back to Woodrow Wilson

ddc-header2

“Eventually, the regions created by Sykes-Picot would cease being mandates/colonies. They would become independent nations. But these nations were Frankenstein monsters. They contained unstable mixtures of Arabs, Persians, and Kurds — of Sunni and Shia. This instability led to a long succession of dictators, who held these unnatural states together by brute force. For the remainder of the 20th Century, Britain, France, Soviet Russia, and the United States would back these strongmen to contain angry Muslims in these territories.”

Was World War 2 a “good war?”

“Too many Americans assume that every conflict must have a good side and a bad side.  Not true. More often than not both sides are bad. That was certainly the case both in WW1 and with Chiang Kai-shek versus Japan.  Adults realize that some situations are unfixable. You just have to wait them out because any effort to intervene just makes matters worse. Sadly…  The closer you look, the worse the case against the U.S. war with Japan becomes. If you’re going to pick a fight with someone, as FDR did with Japan, and then sacrifice vast wealth and innocent young lives to that purpose, you had better make damned sure you leave things better than you found them. But the exact opposite happened in the case of the Pacific War.”

The cost of a Colorado Congressional seat increased 23.5x in 6 years

“Colorado’s 6th district is now fetching $17,866,308 in total election spending.  That’s a 23.5x increase in just six years, putting Apple’s stock performance to shame.  Of course, a Congressional seat isn’t exactly an investment in the traditional sense.  But let’s be honest: no one puts up millions of dollars to back a candidate without expecting a return on that investment, just like no one invests in Apple stock without expecting a return. They’re both investments.”

Total cost of 2016 election could reach $6.6 billion, CRP predicts

“Is 2016 the Year of the Billionaire when it comes to financing the election?  There are plenty in the mix. And they’ve helped fuel what is turning out to be the most expensive election ever. The Center for Responsive Politics projects that candidates, parties and outside groups could spend nearly $6.6 billion by the time it’s all over, $86.5 million more than the last presidential cycle when adjusted for inflation. The cost could be much higher — this is a conservative estimate.”

Amid food crisis, Venezuelan president Maduro launches “Salsa Hour” radio show

“Tensions have been mounting in Venezuela, which is edging closer to a breaking point as it faces a recession, soaring food prices and broken hospitals. Opponents have pushed for a recall referendum to remove Maduro from power, but courts shot down the effort last month, alleging voter identity fraud.”
