New Attorney General opposes encryption, while GOP uses it to avoid leaks

Trump’s attorney general Jeff Sessions has said the new administration will seek to ‘overcome encryption’ in remarks that have been interpreted as a veiled reference to backdoors.

At the same time, Trump administration members and other Republicans are using the encrypted, self-destructing messaging app Confide to keep conversations private in the wake of hacks and leaks.

Trump comes out in support of Ex-Im Bank, reversing campaign rhetoric

“On Thursday, two Democratic senators said that Trump indicated he would support the bank following a lunch with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. In addition, they said Trump promised to fill two vacant seats on the bank’s board, which in the meantime is barred from financing deals of more than $10 million.  ‘I specifically talked with the president about the need to get the Export-Import Bank up and running,’ Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota said. ‘It’s great news he agreed.’  Though the bank said that 90 percent of its authorizations are for small businesses, Boeing is one of its biggest beneficiaries.”

Trump Provides Nuclear War Guarantee To Japan, Contrary To Campaign Pledge

“A joint U.S.-Japanese statement said the U.S. commitment to defend Japan through nuclear and conventional military capabilities is unwavering.  The statement amounted to a victory for Abe, who came to Washington wanting to develop a sense of trust and friendship with the new U.S. president and send a message that the decades-old alliance is unshakeable.  Japan got continued U.S. backing for its dispute with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea that China also claims. The statement said the two leaders affirmed that Article 5 of the U.S.-Japan security treaty covered the islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.”

Trump Vows to Unveil ‘Additional Security’ After ‘Disgraceful’ Court Blocks Travel Ban

President Trump this afternoon pledged to ‘keep our country safe’ after he had earlier lashed out at a federal appeals court’s decision to uphold a restraining order against his immigration executive order, tweeting it was ‘a disgraceful decision.’  Trump answered reporters’ questions on the court’s decision during a joint White House news conference this afternoon with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo, saying his administration will continue with the legal process and will ‘no doubt’ win the case.  The president also hinted at further national security steps to come next week. ‘We’ll be doing something very rapidly having to do with additional security for our country. You’ll be seeing that sometime next week.'”

Most Government Workers Could Be Replaced By Robots, New Study Finds

“A study by a British think tank, Reform, says that 90% of British civil service workers have jobs so pointless, they could easily be replaced by robots, saving the government around $8 billion per year.  The study, published this week, says that robots are ‘more efficient’ at collecting data, processing paperwork, and doing the routine tasks that now fall to low-level government employees. Even nurses and doctors, who are government employees in the UK, could be relieved of some duties by mechanical assistants.”

US pilots call on Trump to ban Norwegian airline from US

“Captain Todd Insler, chairman of the MEC, has written to Donald Trump to say the airline ‘will destroy our US airline industry and all of the jobs associated with it’, as, he claims, its business model ‘undercuts the marketplace, allowing NIA to steal US jobs’ to ‘Singapore and Thailand’. Norwegian denies this.  Alpa is calling on Trump to revoke the permit granted to Norwegian last year. Its president Captain Tim Canoll said Trump had been vocal about protecting American jobs in his campaign.”

Homeland Security to require social media passwords from US visitors

“Meeting with Congress on Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly suggested the United States could soon ask international visitors for passwords to social media accounts. ‘We want to get on their social media, with passwords: What do you do, what do you say?’ Kelly told the House Homeland Security Committee about the potential vetting measure, in a moment noted by NBC News. ‘If they don’t want to cooperate then you don’t come in.'”

Four More Years of Bush-Obama Foreign Policy, and Maybe Worse

“All that Trump had to do is pull the troops out of the Middle East and Afghanistan and bring them home, immediately, without killing one more person, including 8-year-old Nawar al-Awlaki. That would have meant the end of anti-American terrorism, which would have meant no more war on terrorism, including Trump’s Muslim ban.  But then again, that also would have meant a severe diminution in the power, influence, and taxpayer-funded resources of the U.S. national-security establishment, which is the undoubtedly the biggest reason why Trump has now chosen to travel the 16-year-old road of death and destruction, loss of liberty, and out-of-control federal spending of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.”

Trump admin. singles out Germany for ‘exploiting’ US, signals currency war

“In comments published in the European press on Tuesday, Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro said the ‘grossly undervalued’ euro served as a currency for Germany alone, allowing the country to ‘exploit’ the United States and others.  On Capitol Hill, Treasury Secretary-designate Steven Mnuchin softened the traditional U.S. ‘strong dollar’ mantra, suggesting that the dollar’s current strength may be working against what has become perhaps the administration’s central economic priority: reviving U.S. manufacturing and exports.”
