As part of a $5 million settlement between the city and the McDonald family, a judge barred attorneys from releasing the video.  From the beginning, Chicago police have sought to conceal information about McDonald’s death—in at least one case by apparently violating not only IPRA procedures but the Constitution when they seized security footage from a nearby restaurant without a warrant. McDonald family attorneys learned that police had wiped 86 minutes of footage from that tape,”

Video Shows Chicago Cop Executing Laquan McDonald in Street

“Laquan McDonald was lying in the fetal position when Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke pumped more than a dozen bullets into the 17-year-old boy’s body, killing him.  Investigators could only attribute two of the 16 shots fired by Van Dyke as striking McDonald while he was standing. The rest—as many as 14—struck McDonald as he lay wounded on the ground.  After emptying a 15-round magazine plus one bullet in the chamber, Van Dyke began to reload before being called off by his partner, who approached McDonald and kicked the knife away.”

Tamir Rice Protesters March to Prosecutor’s Home, Demand Resignation

“Protesters upset by a decision not to indict two white police officers in the shooting death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old black boy who had a pellet gun, marched to the home of the prosecutor Friday and repeated calls for him to resign.  Tamir was shot within two seconds of the officers’ police cruiser skidding to a stop near the boy.  McGinty said police radio personnel contributed to the tragedy by failing to pass along the ‘all-important fact’ that a 911 caller said the gunman was probably a juvenile and the gun probably was not real. Mayor Frank Jackson and Police Chief Calvin Williams said that as protests continue, they plan to balance public safety with protesters’ First Amendment rights.”

Chicago Grandmother Killed by Police Was ‘Being a Good Citizen’

“Two days after Bettie Jones was shot dead by Chicago police, it remains unclear why the 55-year-old grandmother of five walked to the front door of her West Side home, the spot where she became what authorities called an ‘accidental’ casualty of a ‘domestic disturbance.’  But her daughter has a theory about the one-time crossing guard. She was ‘just being a good citizen,’ Latarsha Jones told NBC News. ‘Trying to help out.’ The Jones family’s lawyer, Sam Adam Jr., assailed the authorities’ version of the incident, telling NBC News on Monday that ‘many’ shell casings were found ‘down the street’ from Jones’ home.”

6,000 Cops, Checkpoints, Snipers, K-9s: A New Year in a Police State

Roughly 1,200 probationary cops and plainclothes police will also be assigned to either watch the perimeter or infiltrate the crowds while working undercover.  The crowd must enter at one of the 14 checkpoints and submit to body inspections with magnetometers and hand wands as counterterrorism officers armed with long guns stand by. After enduring a secondary screening, people will be allowed to watch the ball drop from one of the 65 massive spectator pens while surrounded by snipers and K-9 units.”

Martin Shkreli’s former company KaloBios files for bankruptcy

“The move comes after Shkreli, its former CEO, was charged on December 17 in federal court with securities fraud related to a hedge fund and another company. Shkreli pleaded not guilty to the charges.  Shkreli initially gained notoriety in September when, as the chief executive of Turing Pharmaceuticals, he raised the price of Daraprim— a drug used to treat a dangerous parasitic infection— from $13.50 to $750 per pill.  The move generated harsh criticism from prominent politicians, including Hillary Clinton, and spurred a senate investigation into drug pricing.”

Standoff In Oregon After Feds Convict Ranchers Under Terrorism Statute

“Two ranchers from Burns, Oregon have been convicted of terrorism because twice over the last decade-and-a-half they did what ranchers have been doing since arriving in the west.  The father and son performed controlled burns.  When the men were initially sentenced a judge balked at the ridiculously harsh guidelines and was lenient.  Washington, D.C. appealed and a liberal court in San Francisco ordered the ranchers back to prison.  The ranchers also bowed to a government demand that if they sell land some concoction known as the BLM gets right of first refusal.  As the Hammond Ranch falters with its operators behind bars the federal beast can devour even more ground.”
