“Hubris”: New Documentary Reexamines the Iraq War “Hoax”

“A decade ago, on March 19, 2003, President George W. Bush launched the invasion of Iraq that would lead to a nine-year war resulting in 4,486 dead American troops, 32,226 service members wounded, and over 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians. The tab for the war topped $3 trillion. Bush did succeed in removing Saddam Hussein, but it turned out there were no weapons of mass destruction and no significant operational ties between Saddam’s regime and Al Qaeda. That is, the two main assertions used by Bush and his crew to justify the war were not true.  Our book was the first cut at an important topic: how a president had swindled the nation into war with a deliberate effort to hype the threat.”

“Before he assumed the position of chief of service at the teeming Necker Hospital in 1816, Laënnec became adept at a technique called percussion, which involves striking the chest with one’s fingertips in search of pathologic processes. Yet neither percussion nor the time-honored technique of listening to breath sounds by placing an ear against a patient’s chest satisfied Laënnec’s demand for diagnostic precision.  He was especially critical of physicians’ inability to hear muffled sounds emerging from the chest of an obese person, and he balked at what he described as the ‘disgusting’ hygiene of his patients, many of whom were unwashed or lice-ridden.”

How ancient Rome influenced European law

“The Roman Empire collapsed in AD 476. Isn’t it astonishing that its influence is still so great almost 2,000 years later? [..] When the empire fell, remnants of Roman law remained, coexisting with the common law of the barbarians. But it continued to thrive in the east of the Roman Empire. In the first half of the 6th century, Justinian gathered and compiled every legal judgement from the previous centuries.  In the West, this compilation was rediscovered in Bologna, Italy, at the end of the 11th century. From that emerged the creation of Europe’s first university and first law faculty. From there, Roman law spread across all of Catholic Europe.”
