Americans troubled more by governmental abuse than terrorism

Only with the latest inquiry though are those answers reversed: the last time a majority of Americans opposed giving up privacy for security was May 2001.  Not only are Americans more opposed now to giving up personal freedoms for the sake of security than they were after 9/11, but other statistics show that distrust against the federal government continues to climb.”

Teens urged to promote ObamaCare to parents under California grant

“The Los Angeles school system reportedly plans to use a state grant to promote ObamaCare, in part by teaching students to become ‘messengers’ for the law. The Heartland Institute first reported on the grant, one of $37 million in state grants announced in May by Covered California, the state’s health insurance exchange. Of that, $990,000 was awarded to The Los Angeles Unified School District. A brief synopsis of the grant says it would be used for ‘outreach calls’ to families and ‘adult-student class presentations.’ But it also states as an objective: ‘Teens trained to be messengers to family members.'”

French bank watchdog levies stiff fine against UBS over tax avoidance

“A French banking watchdog said on Wednesday that it fined the French branch of UBS, Switzerland’s largest bank, ten million euros for helping hundreds of well-heeled clients stash money away in undeclared Swiss accounts.  The bank immediately hit back in a statement, protesting that the fine, about $13 million, was disproportionate.  The issue jumped back to the top of the government’s agenda in the wake of a scandal surrounding the former budget minister Jérôme Cahuzac, who in April was himself placed under investigation for tax fraud. His role as budget minister included tackling tax evasion.”

NYPD collaborated with CIA on surveillance after 9/11

“Campaigners for greater accountability at New York’s powerful police force have seized on a report that details for the first time the extent of the collaboration between the CIA and the NYPD in the years after 9/11.  The formerly-classified inspector general’s report also raises new questions over whether the spy agency’s partnership with the nation’s largest police department amounted to unofficial cover for CIA officers to operate in the US in ways that could otherwise be deemed unlawful. The 12-page document contains the December 2011 findings of an investigation into the CIA’s training and support of the NYPD that included embedding four officers in the department.”

NSA collected US email records in bulk for more than two years under Obama

“The Obama administration for more than two years permitted the National Security Agency to continue collecting vast amounts of records detailing the email and internet usage of Americans, according to secret documents obtained by the Guardian. The documents indicate that under the program, launched in 2001, a federal judge sitting on the secret surveillance panel called the Fisa court would approve a bulk collection order for internet metadata ‘every 90 days’. The collection of these records began under the Bush administration’s wide-ranging warrantless surveillance program, collectively known by the NSA codename Stellar Wind.”

Two Thirds of Americans Support Drones for ‘Homeland Security’ Missions

“The survey also canvassed law enforcement officers, 72% of whom supported the use of unmanned drones for surveillance purposes and 66% supported their use for ’emergency response’.  Initial testing of robotic spy drones for ‘public safety’ applications was conducted by the DHS’ Science and Technology directorate at Fort Sill, Oklahoma last year. The DHS has also been giving grants worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to police departments across the country enabling them to purchase unmanned surveillance drones such as the Shadowhawk drone, a 50lb mini helicopter that can be fitted with an XREP taser with the ability to fire four barbed electrodes.”
