‘Drop Dropbox’ protests as wiretap proponent Condoleezza Rice joins

“CEO Drew Houston made it clear on Wednesday that Dropbox wants to be a bigger part of your day-to-day life. But protesters are threatening to ditch Dropbox from their life completely, thanks to yesterday’s appointment of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the Dropbox board.  Rice supports warrantless wiretaps and has a generally pro-surveillance political stance (an issue that Drop Dropbox also touches upon). Given that Dropbox has such deep access to the files of its 275 million users, and that the information collection should only increase if users start using auxiliary services like Carousel and Mailbox en masse, Rice’s appointment has struck a collective nerve.”

Legislator’s Phony Tirade Denying IRS Targeting Exposed By Emails

“If you’ve paid even a modicum of attention to the House Oversight Committee hearings on the IRS scandal, you know that Ranking Member Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has insisted from the beginning that the Republican-led investigation has been little more than a witch hunt.  Cummings has been accused of virtually running cover for the White House, a charge he has vehemently denied. Now, newly delivered internal emails between Cummings’ staff and the IRS not only prove otherwise, but show that Cummings’ own staff directly communicated with the IRS about at least one of the conservative groups targeted by the agency.”

Prohibition 2.0: Marijuana Mimics Alcohol

“Before alcohol could be prohibited, the temperance society knew it had to address the tax issue. Alcohol tax generated 40% of the government’s budget and that was the ‘Drys’ biggest challenge — replace the alcohol revenue. The 16th amendment created the federal income tax in 1913 and that was the first step to changing the revenue stream for the government. So you can thank the tee totalers for the income tax we have today. Income taxes far surpassed the liquor taxes and so the road became clear to pass a prohibition against alcohol manufacture and sales. In 1919, the 18th Amendment or ‘Prohibition’ was passed.”

Cheap Printing vs. Expensive Drilling

“Yellen explained that the Fed helps people secure employment ‘by influencing interest rates.’ She followed, ‘Although we work through financial markets, our goal is to help Main Street, not Wall Street.’  Her predecessor used the same rhetoric in 2012. ‘This is a Main Street policy. Many people own stocks directly or indirectly. The issue here is whether or not improving asset prices generally will make people more willing to spend.’  Oil, unlike the Fed’s fiat dollars, can’t be created out of nothing. And, job or no job, people are driving.  Mrs. Yellen tells crowds, Don’t worry be happy, your job will be printed anytime now.  Let’s just say, for those with a job to go to, getting there will not be getting easier.”

Ron Paul, Congress Believes: Spy On Thee, But Not Me

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“The reaction of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein to recent revelations that the CIA secretly searched Senate Intelligence Committee computers reveals much about what Washington thinks about the rest of us. ‘Spy on thee, but not on me!’  Feinstein’s hypocrisy on this issue is astounding. She is an enthusiastic backer of the National Security Agency spying on the rest of us, but when the tables are turned, and her staff is the target, she becomes irate. But there is more to it than that. There is an attitude in Washington that the laws Congress passes do not apply to its members. They can trample our civil liberties, they believe, but it should never affect their own freedom.”

Random Drug Testing for All? Chilling Proposal Could Eradicate Privacy

“The practice of random drug testing has become popularized in both the workplace and in public schools. But according to a recently released paper by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the controversial practice is, at present, ‘underutilized’ and ought to be expanded to include people of all ages in virtually all aspects of daily life.  ASAM’s paper calls for the expanded use of random drug screening among patients undergoing palliative care as well as those seeking emergency medical treatment, psychiatric treatment or obstetric care.  Adolescent patients, as well as geriatric patients also ought to be targeted for increased drug test monitoring.”

Jon Stewart calls out Senator Feinstein for CIA hacking hypocrisy

“The moment that a notoriously pro-surveillance member of Congress spent nearly an hour excoriating the CIA for breaking into Senate computers, a Daily Show sketch became inevitable. Jon Stewart doesn’t disappoint. The best reason to watch it, though, is that it’s actually a fantastic rundown of the whole story, from Bush-era torture practices to the CIA ‘assassinating data’ and then blaming IT administrators. If you’re looking to chew through Feinstein’s long, dense presentation, it’s the best appetizer you could possibly get.”

Feinstein accuses CIA of hacking Congress, intimidating staff

“Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee, has accused the CIA of searching Senate computers for copies of an internal agency interrogation report, accusing the CIA of violating both anti-hacking laws and the Constitution. In a speech on the Senate floor this morning, Feinstein corroborated reports made earlier by McClatchy, saying that the CIA had first stonewalled committee members who were trying to investigate its interrogation practices, rifled through files to figure out what they knew, and then turned around and accused them of stealing the report, intimidating staff in the process.”

Health Czar Shows Amazing Ignorance About Marijuana

“In the Internet era, members of the general public have unprecedented access to scientific facts and figures. Among the resources now available at one’s fingertips is the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. NCBI is an NIH.gov electronic search engine that allows the public to instantly read the abstracts of hundreds of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers on virtually any subject, including an estimated 20,000 papers on cannabis alone.  So why then does the head of the National Institutes of Health purport to know so little about the science of pot?”
