For Narcos and Jamie Dimon, Crime Does Pay: Dimon Gets 77% Raise

“With around $20 billion in fines for civil and criminal violations, JPMorgan Chase is making history.  Of course, as most narcos know, you’ve got to factor in losing some money to making a lot of money.  That means the leaders of the so-called banks too big to fail — like their drug cartel counterparts — are doing just fine indeed. That is just the case with Jamie Dimon.  After a year of virtually non-stop settlements with the US government for various violations of regulations and the law (but no criminal indictments or personal fines against Dimon, or prosecuted criminal charges against JP Morgan Chase), his board felt that a 77 percent increase in his salary to $20 million a year was in order.”

White House refuses to accept that NSA phone dragnet is illegal

“In a new interview with MSNBC, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that he had not read the new surveillance report from the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB)—but nonetheless disagreed with its findings. That report, which was released on Thursday by the Congressionally approved board, argued that the NSA’s telephone metadata program was illegal.  ‘At least 15 judges on about 35 occasions have said that the program itself is legal,’ Holder said. ‘I think that those other judges, those 15 judges, got it right.’  Holder and the White House have both expressed great skepticism at the PCLOB’s recommendations.”

New York Vying With California to Write Bitcoin Rules

“California and New York, home to Silicon Valley and Wall Street, are preparing to write rules of the road for entrepreneurs driving a surge of interest in Bitcoin and other virtual currencies.  The outcome could determine how big a threat Bitcoin poses to established payment companies including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Visa Inc. as well as where venture capital and talent converge to form a geographic hub for U.S. startups. Regulators and law enforcers have expressed concern that Bitcoin could facilitate money laundering and sales of drugs and other illegal goods.  JPMorgan Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon has said he expects that Bitcoin will be less of a threat once regulators intervene.”

Jack Lew to John Boehner: Raise debt ceiling in February

“The Obama administration wants Congress to raise the debt limit in the next 16 days.  Treasury Secretary Jack Lew sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, saying the ‘best course of action would be for Congress to’ raise the nation’s debt limit ‘before February 7 to ensure orderly financing of the government.’ At the latest, Lew writes, Congress must lift the cap by the end of February.  The debt limit is not the fiscal standoff it used to be. When Republicans first took the House, they demanded deep cuts to spending as a price for increasing the national borrowing limit. Last time they lifted the cap, they did it without concessions from Democrats and President Barack Obama.”

Shock: Reuters Compares Madoff Scam to Street Practices

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“This article comes right out and expresses the position that what Madoff did illegally is similar to what Wall Street – specifically the hedge fund portion of it – does every day.  While this point has often been made in the alternative media, to see it plainly posted at Reuters is startling.  While the article has another agenda (more on that below), it is somewhat anomalous, and its posting can be justified by current events: specifically, the fine that was just paid by JP Morgan based on findings that JP Morgan assisted Madoff in the fund that proved to be fraudulent.  This Reuters article comes tantalizingly close to revealing the truth about Wall Street.”

Americans Indifferent About Destruction of Fourth Amendment

“Polls also indicate a majority of Americans believe the whistleblower Edward Snowden is a criminal who should be prosecuted.  ‘Overall, the public is divided about whether Edward Snowden’s leak of classified information, which brought the program to light, has served or harmed the public interest: 45% say it has served the public interest while 43% say it harmed it,’ Pew Research reported on Monday. ‘Nonetheless, a 56% majority wants to see the government pursue a criminal case against Snowden, while 32% oppose this.’  Defenders of the Fourth Amendment place hope in a positive ruling by the Supreme Court. Following rulings by lower courts, however, this appears unlikely.”

Who Read 1,582-Page $1.1T Spending Bill? Congressman: ‘Nobody Did’

“When asked whether he read the 1,528-page,  $1.1 trillion government spending bill before he voted for it yesterday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said, ‘Nobody did!’  The $1.1 trillion bill will fund the federal government for the rest of fiscal year 2014, which ends on Sept. 30, 2014.   Sixty-four Republicans and three Democrats voted against the legislation. The final vote was 359-67. The legislation was opposed by conservative groups and conservative members of Congress.  The bill increases federal spending by $44.8 billion this year over the spending level previously set by Congress.”

Greenwald: Obama’s NSA ‘reforms’ are little more than a PR attempt

“The crux of this tactic is that US political leaders pretend to validate and even channel public anger by acknowledging that there are ‘serious questions that have been raised’. They vow changes to fix the system and ensure these problems never happen again. And they then set out, with their actions, to do exactly the opposite: to make the system prettier and more politically palatable with empty, cosmetic ‘reforms’ so as to placate public anger while leaving the system fundamentally unchanged, even more immune than before to serious challenge.  This scam has been so frequently used that it is now easily recognizable.”

Wendy McElroy: America’s Surveillance State

mcelroy1

“The domestic surveillance state is sometimes called the electronic police state. Those in political power use law enforcement to closely monitor the opinions and peaceful behavior of citizens in order to forestall and punish opposition. Typically the surveillance involves secret files, covert wiretapping, informants, the collection of personal data such as sexual preferences, and other tactics that are odious to a free society. The domestic surveillance state is often associated with the East German Stasi or the Soviet KGB. But its roots are deep in American soil, and it is reaching full growth with the ‘war on terror.'”

This Chart Explains Why Politicians Aren’t Like The Rest of Us

“Members of Congress have always been rich, and today they’re even richer.  In fact, a new study from the Center for Responsive Politics suggests, it’s possible more than half of them are millionaires.  The Center for Responsive Politics, which runs the money-in-government website OpenSecrets.org, calculated the maximum and minimum possible net worth of each member of Congress, by adding up the high and low ends of the value ranges for each asset and liability listed. They then averaged the two and found that, for more than half of members, that average is over $1 million.”
