Cop who killed unarmed teen for selling marijuana not charged

“Seneca Police Lt. Mark Tiller shot and killed Zachary Hammond, 19, of Seneca, S.C., in an attempted marijuana bust July 26 in a fast-food parking lot. The officer said he shot Hammond because he feared the teenager was trying to run over him with his car. Eric Bland, lawyer for the Hammond family, said video from the officer’s dashboard camera clearly shows that Tiller was not in danger of being run over when he fired the fatal shot and said federal charges of civil-rights violations could still be forthcoming. Tori Morton of Pickens, Hammond’s date that night, was charged with simple possession of marijuana.”

Trump’s Ban on Muslims Is Unconstitutional and Obscures Real Solution

eland_ivan_100x1331

“Trump’s solution is just a more extreme version of the denial that the West has shown since 9/11 that radical Islamist terrorism is retaliatory in nature. The reality for Middle Eastern Muslims has become what George W. Bush claimed after 9/11: the United States needs to fight them over there so it doesn’t have to fight them over here. For Middle Eastern Muslims, they are beginning to strike over here to ultimately get the United States to withdraw from over there. Thus, Trump’s proposal is just one more example of a false solution based on hysteria.”

Police Kill Hostage Who Had Sued Them Over an Earlier SWAT Raid

thelrcblog-5002

“The only casualty of an hours-long SWAT raid and hostage situation in Neenah, Wisconsin was a disabled veteran who had filed a $50 million civil rights suit after he survived a similar SWAT raid three years ago.  Michael Funk, a co-owner of Eagle Nation Cycles, was shot and killed by police after being held hostage for several hours on December 5.  The ‘Peacekeeper’ did nothing to protect Michael Funk, whom the Neenah Police supposedly set out to rescue. His death was the product of either incomprehensible misfortune or uncanny – and malicious – marksmanship on the part of a police department that institutionally had cause to resent him.”

Federal Appeals Court Overrules Judge Who Believed Motorist Over A Cop

“Judges rarely side with drivers over the word of a police officer, and the Sixth Circuit US Court of Appeals took action last week to keep it that way. A three-judge appellate panel corrected a lower court judge believed driver Samuel Duane Johnson Jr was more credible than the Michigan State Police troopers who stopped him.  Troopers Bradley Ross and Jason Walters were on ‘directed patrol’ that morning, which means their supervisors expected them to write as many traffic tickets as possible, even for the pettiest of offenses. Typically, this means writing thirty citations in a night.”

U.S. Officially Honors Its Torturers and War Criminals, After Shielding Them

“Obama’s immunizing Bush-era torturers converted torture from a global taboo and decades-old crime into a reasonable, debatable policy question, which is why so many GOP candidates are now openly suggesting its use. But now, the Obama administration has moved from legally protecting Bush-era war criminals to honoring and gushing over them in public. Yesterday, the House of Representatives unveiled a marble bust of former Vice President Cheney, which — until a person of conscience vandalizes or destroys it — will reside in Emancipation Hall of the U.S. Capitol. Along with George W. Bush, one of the speakers in attendance was Vice President Joe Biden.”

San Antonio Police Leave Man Paralyzed for Taking Photos of Wife’s Business

“A man who was attacked by three San Antonio police officers last year while taking photos of his wife’s business is now paralyzed from the neck down.  But San Antonio police have already wiped their hands of the matter, saying they had merely confused Roger Carlos with a violent felon whom they were chasing when they hopped out of a van and attacked him before realizing he was the wrong man.  The department’s chief told the media last year that the three cops would be suspended for 15 unpaid days, before quietly reducing the punishment to five days before retiring immediately after. The cops were allowed to use accrued leave time, so they didn’t miss receiving their regular income.”

Officer Friendly is Dead

“The Chicago Police Department was forced to release a video—one that they went to court to keep from publicly releasing—of the shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. He was shot last October by Officer Jason Van Dyke. Despite the fact that Mr. McDonald fell to the ground after being shot once by Officer Van Dyke, Van Dyke proceeded to shoot Mr. McDonald 15 more times as he lay on the ground, then proceeded to reload his pistol, apparently to shoot some more, until stopped by his fellow officers. Thanks to this video, Officer Van Dyke is now under charge for 1st Degree Murder, which as far as I can tell from the video, is entirely appropriate.”

Police Department Planted Drugs on Young Black Men For Years; D.A. Complicit

“The Alabama Justice Project has obtained documents that reveal a Dothan Police Department’s Internal Affairs investigation was covered up by the district attorney. A group of up to a dozen police officers on a specialized narcotics team were found to have planted drugs and weapons on young black men for years. They were supervised at the time by Lt. Steve Parrish, current Dothan Police Chief, and Sgt. Andy Hughes, current Asst. Director of Homeland Security for the State of Alabama. The documents shared reveal that the internal affairs investigation was covered up to protect the aforementioned officers’ law enforcement careers and keep them from being criminally prosecuted.”

My Parents Were Put In Internment Camps—Don’t Bring Them Back

“I never imagined having to explain that using racial bias to incarcerate and relocate more than 100,000 people, including my parents and grandparents, was a bad policy. But here we are.  In 1942, my family members were stripped of their possessions and their freedom because they looked like some of the people America was fighting. Excluding the mayor of Roanoke, this is universally viewed as one of the darkest chapters in our nation’s history. Many Japanese-Americans are still scarred by their extrajudicial internment. My parents have barely ever spoken of it.”

Virginia Democrat mayor invokes WWII internment of Japanese Americans

“A Virginia mayor ignited a backlash Wednesday after he cited America’s mass detention of Japanese Americans during World War II as support for his call to deny Syrian refugees the opportunity to resettle in the United States.  For many public officials across the nation, the mass detention of Japanese Americans during World War II has long been one of the most embarrassing moments in the nation’s history — a dark chapter that has been apologized for and legally repudiated, and which is now providing a mirror for some Asian American lawmakers to hold up to the present.”
