Bangladesh Becomes Bitcoin Foundation’s First Asian Affiliate

“The Bitcoin Foundation has announced its first affiliate group in Asia, with Bitcoin Foundation Bangladesh becoming the latest local advocacy group to join its international network.  Bangladesh is the eighth most populated country in the world, with over 150 million people. Although still considered a ‘developing country’, it has an open and market-based economy driven mainly by agriculture and large-scale manufacturing industries.  As is the case with neighboring India and the Philippines, Bangladesh counts on remittances from foreign-based workers and even local employees sending money from large cities to small towns as a significant contributor to its GDP.”

Mt. Gox Head Believes No More Bitcoins Will Be Found

“‘I was always worried: ‘What if all the bitcoins got stolen?’ ‘ the 29-year-old Frenchman said in an interview, his first since a Feb. 28 news conference to announce the exchange’s bankruptcy filing.  Mr. Karpelès says the failure to find experienced executives to help him deal with day-to-day operations was a critical mistake. Instead of focusing on the company’s technology, he often spent hours each day in meetings with lawyers and bankers.  Mr. Karpelès said the exchange’s fast growth had been too much for him. In just three months after he bought Mt. Gox from founder Jed McCaleb in March 2011, the 3,000 accounts surged by a factor of 20, he said.”

Thailand’s ruling junta approves China rail links worth $23bn

Thailand‘s ruling junta has approved a $23 billion (£13.6bn) transport project that will see two high-speed railways link up directly with China by 2021, in a move seen as a further consolidation of Chinese power in the region.  The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), headed by Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha – who took control of Thailand in a bloodless military coup in May – unveiled plans this week connecting the northern border town of Nong Khai with Map Ta Phut, located south-east of Bangkok. Chaing Khong, just south of the Laos capital Vientiane, will also be connected to Ban Phachi, in the central Ayutthaya regions.”

Holiday in Thailand could end for expats

“Recent forced deportations of undocumented migrant workers from neighbouring Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, as well as a campaign against grey industries including unlicensed taxis and street vendors, suggests the military government means business, said Rex Baay, an immigration consultant at Siam Legal International.  Thailand’s travel industry represents 20 percent of the country’s total economic output. Thailand’s medical tourism industry accounts for about 40 percent of the global market. Anything that restricts the free movement of foreigners into and out of the country is likely to impact Thailand’s economy.”

Jim Rogers: I am still in wait-and-watch mode on India

“The one thing that would make me probably invest in India is if the currency is made convertible and makes it legal and easy for foreigners to invest there. Right now, it is very difficult to invest in India because the currency is not convertible and because it is illegal for foreigners easily to invest there. This is absurd. If India claims where it wants to be – that it is a great economic power, which it could be some day – issues related to currency convertibility, high inflation, debt, ease of investing have to be addressed. You also need to cut bureaucracy. India has the worst bureaucracy in the world and I haven’t seen anything quite like it. If these things change, India could be a very exciting place for me.”

Jim Rogers: China to be most important country in 21st century

“Sanction threats against Russia sent shock waves of panic across the world of investment. There’s still those who still believe in the prospects of the Russian economy, despite the political turmoil. So, what are these prospects? How are sanctions affecting the financial balance of power? And, finally, what does Moscow’s turn to Beijing mean for the future of the global economy? We ask these questions to a renowned investor and businessman – Jim Rogers.”

Rising home prices a global concern

“Take a look at the world’s dizzying surges in the price of housing for 12 months at the end of June: London, up 20%. Manhattan, 18%. Sydney, 15.4%.  Some Singaporeans have bought homes in neighbouring Malaysia, which requires a passport-control stop and a two-hour drive when traffic is heavy to reach the business district.  Prices on Hong Kong island, roughly the size of Manhattan where about 1.2 million people live, are the third-most expensive in the world after Monaco and London, at US$1,920 per square foot.  While housing costs about half as much in the northernmost New Territories, prices there rose 140% from 2008 through 2012.”

BRICS establish $100bn bank and currency pool to cut out West

“The group of emerging economies signed the long-anticipated document to create the $100 bn BRICS Development Bank and a reserve currency pool worth over another $100 bn. Both will counter the influence of Western-based lending institutions and the dollar.  The new bank will provide money for infrastructure and development projects in BRICS countries, and unlike the IMF or World Bank, each nation has equal say, regardless of GDP size.  Each BRICS member is expected to put an equal share into establishing the startup capital of $50 billion with a goal to reach $100 billion. The BRICS bank will be headquartered in Shanghai.”

World’s Largest LED Hydroponic Farm Used to Be a Sony Factory

“This enormous indoor lettuce farm for example—the largest of its kind in the world—produces 10,000 heads a day in less space than a single American football field and could signal a sea change in how we get our greens.  This 25,000 square foot (roughly half a football field) indoor farm actually used to be a Sony semiconductor plant in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture. That is, until plant physiologist Shigeharu Shimamura set about converting it into the world’s largest indoor farm illuminated by LED.  Using LED bulbs developed by GE, designed to produce the optimal wavelength of light that plants crave, Shimamura is able to accelerate plant growth by 250 percent.”
