Japan secretly funneled hundreds of millions to the NSA, breaking its own laws

“The Intercept publishes a previously-unseen set of Snowden docs detailing more than $500,000,000 worth of secret payments by the Japanese government to the NSA, in exchange for access to the NSA’s specialized surveillance capabilities, in likely contravention of Japanese privacy law (the secrecy of the program means that the legality was never debated, so no one is sure whether it broke the law).”

Philippines anti-drug death squads to target 9-year-old children

“The move to target children signals Duterte’s determination to intensify his drug war, which faces outrage abroad and growing unease at home.  National police chief Ronald Dela Rosa recently announced that he was suspending anti-narcotics operations, which have killed more than 2,500 people, while the force rids itself of corrupt cops. The announcement came after it emerged last month that drug squad officers had killed a South Korean businessman at national police headquarters.  Duterte has signaled he intends to continue his drug war. In late January, he said the campaign would run until his presidency ends in 2022.”

Philippines to disband anti-drug death squads after killing South Korean businessman

“President Rodrigo Duterte said he was embarrassed that anti-drugs officers had abused their power to engage in kidnapping, leading to the death by strangulation of Jee Ick-joo, on the grounds of the national police headquarters.  More than 7,000 people have been killed since Duterte, nicknamed ‘the punisher’, unleashed his bloody crackdown seven months ago, some 2,250 in police operations and the rest still mostly under investigation. His six-year term ends in 2022.”

Trump Provides Nuclear War Guarantee To Japan, Contrary To Campaign Pledge

“A joint U.S.-Japanese statement said the U.S. commitment to defend Japan through nuclear and conventional military capabilities is unwavering.  The statement amounted to a victory for Abe, who came to Washington wanting to develop a sense of trust and friendship with the new U.S. president and send a message that the decades-old alliance is unshakeable.  Japan got continued U.S. backing for its dispute with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea that China also claims. The statement said the two leaders affirmed that Article 5 of the U.S.-Japan security treaty covered the islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.”

Trump Gets Behind Philippines Drug War Death Squads

“The Filipino strongman took office earlier this year with a promise to unleash mass murder on Philippine drug users and dealers, and he has lived up to that vow, leaving the streets running with the blood of more than 5,000 killed so far, either directly by his police, or in a more shadowy fashion by ‘vigilantes.’  Duterte’s bloody campaign has drawn scathing criticism from human rights groups, the United Nations, and the Obama administration, with Duterte responding to the latter by calling Obama a ‘son of a whore.’  But in his phone call with the Filipino strongman, Donald Trump was singing a different tune.”

Trump Threatens Toyota With Taxes Over Plans For New Factory

“The attack overnight on Toyota is his first against a foreign automaker. ‘Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S. NO WAY! Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax,’ Trump tweeted.  Toyota shares fell more than 3 percent before recovering, and Honda Motor Co and Nissan Motor Co slid around 2 percent – even as the government and analysts sought to brush off the impact of the attack.”

Bernanke Advises “Perpetual Bonds” To Japanese Government

“In April the former Federal Reserve chief warned there was a risk Japan at any time could return to deflation. He noted that helicopter money — in which the government issues non-marketable perpetual bonds with no maturity date and the Bank of Japan directly buys them — could work as the strongest tool to overcome deflation, according to Honda. Bernanke noted it was an option, he said.  Bernanke joined central bank chief Haruhiko Kuroda over lunch this Monday and on Tuesday he attended a gathering with Abe and key officials, including Koichi Hamada, another influential economic adviser.  The central bank didn’t reveal what Kuroda and Bernanke discussed.”

Taiwanese gov. blows up fishermen with supersonic missile

“Taiwan’s navy mistakenly launched a supersonic anti-ship missile from a naval base, killing one person and injuring three, officials say.  A patrol boat was undergoing a drill inspection in Kaohsiung when the Hsiung Feng III missile was fired, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported.   It launched in the direction of mainland China, and hit a fishing boat off the Penghu islands, CNA added.  A Taiwanese official said the launch was not ‘politically motivated’.  It came as China celebrates the 95th anniversary of the formation of the Chinese Communist Party.  China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, to be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary.”

After QE failure, BOJ’s Kuroda says no plan to ease policy now

“Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Friday he had no plan to expand monetary stimulus now, blaming sharp declines in oil costs for keeping consumer inflation distant from the bank’s ambitious 2 percent target.  While he maintained his optimistic view of the economy, Kuroda stressed his resolve to ease monetary policy further if risks threaten achievement of the BOJ’s price target.  The remarks, made in response to a question by an opposition lawmaker, pushed down Japanese stocks on disappointment that no immediate monetary stimulus was forthcoming.”

After vote, China tells Taiwan to abandon independence “hallucination”

“Taiwan should abandon its ‘hallucinations’ about pushing for independence, as any moves towards it would be a ‘poison’, Chinese state-run media said after a landslide victory for the island’s independence-leaning opposition.  Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won a convincing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday, in what could usher in a new round of instability with China, which claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own.  Tsai pledged to maintain peace with its giant neighbour China, while China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned it would oppose any move towards independence and that Beijing was determined to defend the country’s sovereignty.”
