But that did not stop self-appointed guardians in the Zaki Street market of the Maadi neighborhood from repeatedly demanding identity documents, letters of permission and, especially, proof of not being affiliated with Al Jazeera, the pan-Arab news network, which is reviled because it is owned by Qatar, a strong supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Russia to deploy ‘star wars’ defense system in 2017

“Russia’s defence ministry plans to deploy in 2017 a sophisticated new air missile defence system that can hit targets in space, a senior ministry source told Russian news agencies on Friday. The long-range system will be able to destroy targets even if they are in space and cover the whole Russian territory, the source added.  Russia is developing more and more effective missile defence systems for use as a deterrent while opposing plans by the United States to build a missile defence shield in Europe.  Russia has declined to cancel hugely controversial contracts to supply Syria with four of its powerful S-300 air defence missile systems, a deal that has sparked international concern.”

The Egyptian Debacle

Pro-Assad hackers target Marine Corps recruiting website

“Pro-Syrian regime hackers posted messages on a US Marine Corps recruiting website on Monday, urging troops to defy orders from President Barack Obama.  The hackers showed photos of people in American uniforms holding hand-written signs saying they would not fight for Al-Qaeda in Syria.  ‘Obama is a traitor who wants to put your lives in danger to rescue al-Qaeda insurgents,’ the message read, according to a screenshot from The Wall Street Journal.  The US Marine Corps confirmed the intrusion but said the affected site, Marines.com, the official recruitment portal for the Corps, was back to normal.”

FBI increases surveillance of Syrians in U.S.

“The FBI has beefed up its surveillance of Syrians living in the United States ahead of a possible US military attack on Syria, The New York Times reported Sunday. The newspaper said FBI agents are set to interview hundreds of Syrians in the coming days.
US officials are especially concerned because Syria’s close ally Iran has warned that any military action on Syria would leave Israel in flames.  It said senior FBI officials have also directed the bureau’s field offices to follow up with sources linked to Syrians as part of an effort to identify any talk of a retaliatory strike. And Syrians currently under investigation will be placed under closer scrutiny.”

And the scrappy countries are holding more bargaining chips. ‘One of the risks is that you’ve got Iran talking to Russia,’ says James Lewis, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. ‘You have Iran talking to North Korea; you’ve got the Syrians talking to Iran.’ The Pentagons realize the catastrophic damage that cyberattacks pose. And they want to be able to cause that damage just as much as they want to prevent it here at home.”

“I lived in Lebanon in the fall of 1983 when the Reagan administration ordered the Marine peacekeepers deployed in Beirut to open fire on a Muslim militia. The commander bluntly warned Washington that a strike would have dire consequences for U.S. policy and his troops. ‘We’ll get slaughtered down here,’ he predicted. Nonetheless, the cruiser Virginia stationed offshore fired 70 deafening rounds on the Lebanese fighters. It was supposed to be a quick hit. It was supposed to send a warning. But 34 days later, on Oct. 23, a yellow Mercedes truck carrying the equivalent of 6 tons of explosives drove into the Marine barracks as the peacekeepers slept.”
