US Spy Chiefs Reverse Course on Phone Spying — But Just For Huawei

“The FBI and other US intelligence agencies are suddenly and ever so deeply concerned with preserving your smart phone privacy.  Testifying before the US Senate Intelligence Committee, officials from the FBI, CIA, NSA, et al. warned Americans against using phones made by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE.  Why? Because, Christopher Wray (Comey’s successor at the FBI) explains, the Chinese government might equip, or find and exploit weaknesses in, such phones to ‘maliciously modify or steal information’ and ‘conduct undetected espionage.'”

Zimbabwe army takes control but denies coup

No, The Trump Travel Ban Wouldn’t Have Prevented 9/11

For two simple reasons:  the travel ban omits the home countries of the 19 identified 9/11 suspects, including Saudi Arabia, now widely suspected to have been complicit in the 9/11 attacks.  Also, no citizens of the seven countries in the travel ban have been implicated in any other post-9/11 terrorist attacks.

Snowden laughs off CIA’s ‘mistaken’ destruction of secret torture report

CIA ‘mistakenly’ destroys copy of 6,700-page US torture report

“The CIA inspector general’s office has said it ‘mistakenly’ destroyed its only copy of a comprehensive Senate torture report, despite lawyers for the Justice Department assuring a federal judge that copies of the documents were being preserved.  Last summer CIA inspector general officials deleted an uploaded computer file with the report and then accidentally destroyed a disk that also contained the document.  The 6,700-page report contains thousands of secret files about the CIA’s use of ‘enhanced’ interrogation methods, including waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other aggressive interrogation techniques at ‘black site’ prisons overseas.”

Western Digital self-encrypting hard drives riddled with security flaws

“Several versions of self-encrypting hard drives from Western Digital are riddled with so many security flaws that attackers with physical access can retrieve the data with little effort, and in some cases, without even knowing the decryption password, a team of academics said.  The paper, titled got HW crypto? On the (in)security of a Self-Encrypting Drive series, recited a litany of weaknesses in the multiple versions of the My Passport and My Book brands of external hard drives. The flaws make it possible for people who steal a vulnerable drive to decrypt its contents, even when they’re locked down with a long, randomly generated password.”

FBI Director Blames Citizens with Cameras for Increase in Homicides

W.H.O. lists bacon alongside cigarettes, asbestos as carcinogens

“The WHO is set to list beef, bacon and sausage alongside cigarettes and asbestos as cancer causing agents, the Daily Mail reported this week.  The publication said the health body is expected to go further than most scientific studies, by saying processed meat actually causes cancer.  According to the report, the decision is due on Monday, and comes on the heels of a meeting of scientists from ten different countries that reviewed a broad array of data.”
