Japan nuclear agency says Fukushima water leak risk exaggerated

“The chief of Japan’s nuclear watchdog chided the operator of the Fukushima plant Thursday for its inability properly to explain problems, which he said was inflating fears around the world.  Shunichi Tanaka, chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, said information given by Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) on the level of radioactive contamination was ‘scientifically unacceptable’.  Tanaka’s comments come after TEPCO announced it had detected a hotspot with a reading of 2,200 millisieverts per hour.  TEPCO has confirmed that a reading of 2,200 millisieverts per hour would be enough to kill a person in a matter of hours.”

Fukushima ‘not under control’ – TEPCO official refutes PM’s assurances

“A senior TEPCO official contradicted Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by saying the radioactive water leakage at the crippled Fukushima plant is not under control.  The official, Kazuhiko Yamashita, was asked his opinion of comments by Abe regarding the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Plant to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).  ‘I think the current situation is that it is not under control,’ Yamashita said at a hearing in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, on Friday before further apologizing for the leaks.”

Twelve years after 9/11, we still have no idea how to fight terrorism.

“The seven studies include among them 86 findings about the effectiveness of counterterrorism programs, and those findings are startling. Lum, Kennedy and Sherley report that the average effect of the programs examined was negativeThat is, the intervention was found to increase terrorist incidents rather than reduce them. The results varied by the type of intervention, but not in a way that should give us any comfort about our strategy.   It’s scandalous that we spend billions every year on counterterrorism but barely spend any effort on evaluating whether what we’re doing works.”

Beef Prices Set New Record Highs

EPJ13

“Retail beef prices rose nearly 4¢ in August to reach $5.394/lb, a record high, reports Beef Magazine. This should be no problem, though, if you switch to lower priced goods as beef climbs, as government theorizes consumers do as part of its chained-inflation index. For example, peanut butter prices are down 5.7% over the last 12 months, according to the BLS.  So if you switch from steak to peanut butter sandwiches, you won’t notice any increase in the cost of eating.”

Surprise, Surprise: Consumers Do Not Believe the Fed’s Inflation Projections

The-Circle-Bastiat-311

“Caroline Baum of Bloomberg addresses the question of why consumers have ignored the Fed’s widely ballyhooed inflation target of 2 percent  and the fact that CPI inflation has averaged only 1.5 percent over the past five years.   Her answer is enlightening: ‘Consumers either don’t listen, don’t care or derive their expectations from their own shopping cart. Food and gas comprise a big part of the household budget, and energy prices, at least, have been rising much faster than inflation. Just as consumers vote their pocketbook, they use their pocketbook to make judgments on where inflation is today and where prices are headed.'”

Fmr. NSA chief: ‘Morally arrogant’ Snowden will probably become alcoholic

“Gen. Michael Hayden, a former NSA and CIA chief, shared a lot of opinions during a discussion at a Washington church Sunday, beyond his thoughts on terrorists’ love for Gmail and the U.S. government’s approach to the Internet. Discussing the ‘tension between security and liberty’ at St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House, Hayden criticized the reporting of NSA surveillance programs, argued  that society must make a choice between security and liberty, and took personal shots at NSA leaker Edward Snowden.”

Median Household Income Is Flat

“In 2012, median household income in the USA was flat. Adjusted for price inflation, it was down 9% since 1999: the Clinton era. It is where it was in the late 1980s: early Bush I. All this has happened under Keynesianism. The engine of economic development has gone flat for 80% of Americans.  According to Keynesian economic theory, none of this should have happened. The federal government is supposed to be able to manage the economy, so that recessions are short and mild. But that theory was blasted by the recession of 2008-9. The recovery has not done anything for the vast majority of Americans.”

Health Insurance Premiums Continue To Rise Under Obamacare

“Yesterday the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report that claims to highlight how Obamacare is working for Americans—but in reality, it actually shows how the law has fallen short of candidate Obama’s promises. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then one chart in the report tells the tale. Figure 3 of the HHS report (below) highlights what happened when insurers requested to increase premiums by more than 10 percent—triggering a new rate review process established under Obamacare. While some of these premium increases were modified or withdrawn, nearly three in five (57.8 percent) were approved ‘unmodified’ by regulators.”

What Happens When You Can’t Believe A Thing The President Says?

“These are only a few of the many, many instances where Obama or his minions have been caught in false, deceiving or misleading statements — even under oath. It has become so pervasive that people have grown very skeptical of the president’s assertions.
Yet amazingly, some of those same skeptics now defend Obama’s claim that U.S. troops will not be used in Syria. Would that be like his absolute denial to Russert? Maybe Obama means it, or maybe he’ll change his mind. No one can know for sure. The country needs to be able to trust a president and his staff and believe what they say. But that’s not the case anymore.”

Musty Idea: War To Maintain “Credibility” As A Global Hegemon

EPJ13

“In the most recent episode of U.S. war hysteria, the media was filled with endless remarks on how Syria had to be attacked to maintain U.S. ‘credibility’.  These individuals, and many others just like them, care not a whit about the lessons of history.  Ronald Reagan sang the same interventionist tune while he was President. Even after 241 U.S. Marines were killed in the Beirut barracks bombing, he kept up the ‘credibility’ rhetoric.  The warring classes know that the American public has a short memory. Few will recall what happened in Lebanon and the ‘credibility’ garbage that was tossed around back then.”
