Italy Denies Risk to Public Finances From Debt Derivative Deals

“Italy’s treasury denied on Wednesday its use of derivatives as a hedge on its huge debt pile posed any risk to public finances, following reports the country faced billions of euros in potential losses from one set of contracts. The Financial Times and La Repubblica said the eight contracts, restructured at the height of the euro zone crisis in 2012, could result in combined losses of around 8 billion euros ($10.5 billion) based on market prices on June 20.  The newspapers, which quoted a report from the treasury, said the contracts had been taken out in the 1990s, some while European Central Bank president Mario Draghi was director general of the Italian treasury.”

CDC Report Fatally Shoots Obama’s Theory of Gun Violence

“Obama earlier this year issued an executive order commanding the Centers for Disease Control to do a study of gun violence in America — as if gun violence is caused by a disease. The CDC did what it was told. It has issued a report. It shoots down Obama.  ‘Between the years 2000-2010 firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups, annually accounting for 61 percent of the more than 335,600 people who died from firearms related violence in the United States.’ This creates a major problem for Obama. It’s difficult for the government to prosecute users of unregistered handguns who kill themselves.”

The quantity component was good enough to convince the 10 Year the taper is imminent (if not stocks, which continue to trade dislocated from any and all fundamentals). But how about the quality? In a word: not good. In June, the household survey reported that part-time jobs soared by 360,000 to 28,059,000 – an all time record high. Full time jobs? Down 240,000.  And looking back at the entire year, so far in 2013, just 130K Full-Time Jobs have been added, offset by a whopping 557K Part-Time jobs. And there is your jobs ‘quality’ leading to today’s market euphoria (if only for now).”

Far from it, it is another example of Krugman thinking only one or two steps deep.  The fact of the matter is that milk consumption is crashing in America.  This change in milk consumption patterns is having the effect that one would expect, falling milk sales.  In 2011, total U.S. beverage milk sales were 53 billion pounds – about 6 billion gallons – the lowest level since 1984, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture.   Whole milk beverage sales in 2011 were less than half their level from the early 1980s.  Got that? Milk sales are crashing, and it is across all age groups.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says no country will have to leave eurozone

“Reports are now getting out that the French government and the British government both run data-monitoring programs that involve spying as comprehensive as NSA’s. But this is not getting as much attention, because they have not had leakers with stolen documents that prove this. The protests of European governments against NSA spying on their people turns out to be turf war. The government’s politicians resent the fact that the NSA has invaded their turf. Only domestic spies are allowed to spy on domestic populations in European countries. Privacy is a thing of the past all over the world. The cost of spying on us keeps falling.”
