Cop fakes body cam footage, prosecutors drop drug charges

“Prosecutors in Pueblo, Colorado are dropping felony drug and weapon-possession charges after an officer involved in the case said he faked body cam footage so he could walk ‘the courts through’ the vehicle search that led to the arrest.  The actual footage of the search that he produced in court was a reenactment of the search, the officer told prosecutors.”

Trump signs order giving police greater authority, citing phantom “rising crime”

“Donald Trump has signed three executive orders to deal with ‘public safety’, including handing more authority to the police.  He insisted that the US faced the ‘threat of rising crime’ and that ‘things will get better very soon’.  [Jeff] Sessions, a longtime Senator from Alabama who was once deemed too racist to serve as a federal judge, told reporters that the US ‘has a crime problem’.  ‘I wish the rise that we’re seeing in crime in America today were some sort of aberration or a blip,’ he said.”

Trump blames post-travel ban airport chaos on Delta computer outage

“Trump cited a Delta computer failure, which caused delays and more than 300 flight cancellations, as a primary source of trouble at airports over the weekend.  Trump on Friday signed an executive order that banned inbound travel from seven Muslim-majority countries.  The order halted refugee arrivals into the US for 120 days, and it barred citizens of Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen for 90 days. It also indefinitely bars Syrian refugees from entering the US.  The quick rollout of the order stranded some passengers from the seven countries in airports throughout the US and caused confusion among authorities over how the ban should be enforced.”

Republicans, now in majority, turn to supporting $1 trillion budget deficit

“In a dramatic reversal, many members of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus said Thursday they are prepared later this month to support a budget measure that would explode the deficit and increase the public debt to more than $29.1 trillion by 2026, figures contained in the budget resolution itself.  [Rand Paul’s] floor speech attacking the budget measure for making no attempts at deficit reduction — it projects a $9 trillion increase in the debt by 2026 — was preempted by statements from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), pledging to vote for the resolution anyway.”

Surrounded By Protesters, Trump Backpedals On Obamacare Repeal, Clinton Prosecution

Tens of thousands of protesters swarmed Trump Tower, held back by barricades, while billionaire and president-elect Donald Trump continued to mull over his cabinet selections. Earlier, Trump had stated that although his campaign had promised to repeal Obamacare entirely, it would instead be repealed and replaced with a new law that maintains Obamacare’s key provisions: namely, that insurance companies would be required to cover individuals with pre-existing conditions and to cover young adults on their parents’ policies until the age of 26.

Trump also indicated that his campaign’s promise to prosecute former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for numerous instances of alleged official misconduct during her State Department tenure would be considered a low priority.

Hedge Fund That Called Subprime Crisis Urges 50% Yuan Drop

“Mark Hart, the hedge fund manager whose bets against U.S. subprime mortgages and European sovereign debt proved prescient, said China should weaken its currency by more than 50 percent this year. Hart, whose prescription clashes with consensus forecasts for the yuan and recent comments from senior government officials, said China would be justified in weakening the currency after central banks in Europe and Japan fueled declines in their exchange rates to stoke economic growth in recent years. Such a move would likely come as a surprise to global investors, who were rattled by a drop of less than 3 percent in the yuan last August.”

Saudi Arabia Said to Ban Betting Against Its Currency

“Authorities this week ordered banks to limit traders’ ability to bet against the riyal, whose peg to the dollar has been a bulwark of the kingdom’s economic and financial stability since its introduction three decades ago. Countries with currencies pegged to the dollar, such as Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, are coming under increasing pressure from traders speculating that it’s become too expensive for policy makers to continue defending exchange rates as the U.S. currency soars. Bets for a devaluation of the riyal reached their highest in about two decades in January, even after the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency said for a second time in four months it will stick with its currency peg.”
