San Antonio Police Leave Man Paralyzed for Taking Photos of Wife’s Business

“A man who was attacked by three San Antonio police officers last year while taking photos of his wife’s business is now paralyzed from the neck down.  But San Antonio police have already wiped their hands of the matter, saying they had merely confused Roger Carlos with a violent felon whom they were chasing when they hopped out of a van and attacked him before realizing he was the wrong man.  The department’s chief told the media last year that the three cops would be suspended for 15 unpaid days, before quietly reducing the punishment to five days before retiring immediately after. The cops were allowed to use accrued leave time, so they didn’t miss receiving their regular income.”

The Feds Won’t Stop Terrorism This Way

“While the current rationale for encryption back doors is to fight terrorism, they wouldn’t be used just for that purpose. For proof, just look at the history of the PATRIOT Act. This law gives the US government unprecedented civil forfeiture authority over the US ‘correspondent accounts’ of any bank in the world. If an alleged terrorist or other criminal deposits money at the bank overseas, the PATRIOT Act allows the government to seize an equivalent sum of money in the correspondent account in the US.  Proponents justified the law as a necessary escalation in the ‘War on Terror.’ But the very first time the government used its new civil forfeiture authority, it had nothing to do with terrorism.”

No, the Military Has Not Withered Away Under Obama

“In spite of claims that the US is currently engaging in ‘historic’ cuts, today’s anemic military reductions have a long way to go to match the military reductions put in place by Dwight Eisenhower during his administration.  If any president today attempted anything similar to what Eisenhower attempted, he would be immediately denounced as a terrorist and collaborator.  And, naturally, we have every reason to believe that, regardless of who the president is, military spending will spike again the next time a president mobilizes for a new war, whether it’s in Ukraine, Syria, or some other exotic location where we will be assured that the absolutely vital interests of the US are in grave danger.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Who Will Lose in the War on Contractors?

“The haters of the sharing economy are rallying around a plan for destroying the most spectacular ad innovative sector of modern economic life.  The hint came from a speech by Hillary Clinton at the New School in which she suggested that current ‘contractors’ be redefined as ’employees.’ According to her, this means that the workers can then enjoy new human rights, as if by magic. Hillary’s comments amount to a cloud no bigger than a man’s hand. She was speaking for the entire cabal of special interests who dream of crushing innovation.  Hillary poses as a spokesperson for the worker. What it actually means for employment is that many will be out of a job.”

Oracle security chief to customers: Stop checking our code for vulnerabilities

“Oracle’s chief security officer is tired of customers performing their own security tests on Oracle software, and she’s not going to take it anymore. That was the message of a post she made to her corporate blog on August 10—a post that has since been taken down.  Perhaps thinking that all the security researchers in the world were busy recovering from Black Hat and DEF CON and would be somehow more pliant to her earnest message, Mary Ann Davidson wrote a stern message to customers entitled ‘No, You Really Can’t‘.  Davidson scolded customers who performed their own security analyses of code, calling it reverse engineering and a violation of Oracle’s software licensing.”

China stuns financial markets by devaluing yuan for second day running

“With the bank having said on Tuesday that that day’s action was a ‘one-off depreciation’, the rapid two-day drop in the value of the currency of about 4% dealt a blow to investors. They fear a prolonged currency war that could damage world trade should the US and Japan retaliate and drive down the value of the dollar and yen.  The prices of key industrial and construction metals – nickel, copper and aluminium – hit six-year lows.  The International Monetary Fund said China’s move to make the yuan more responsive to market forces appeared to be a welcome step and that Beijing should aim to achieve an effectively floating exchange rate within two to three years.”

Japan Returns to Atomic Club With Restart Amid Public Opposition

“Japan is rejoining the group of nations using atomic power as it sweeps aside public opposition and fires up one of the reactors shuttered for safety upgrades after the Fukushima nuclear disaster more than four years ago.  The initial reaction of Japan’s government after Fukushima was the same as Germany’s — phase out nuclear power. When elections then put Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in charge, this policy was changed. The economics show one of the reasons.  The loss of nuclear forced Japan to switch on power plants running on fossil fuels. As a result, import costs for liquefied natural gas, coal and oil ballooned causing four years of trade deficits that hit a record $103 billion last year.”

NSA Tries to Blame Privacy Advocates for Telephone Records Retention

EFF-awards-Apple-Google-perfect-privacy-scores-300x2071

USA Freedom requires the NSA to stop collecting our telephone records.  An open question when the law passed was what should happen to the mountain of records the NSA has already collected. Will the records be destroyed? Will the NSA keep them? Will it be able to keep using them?  Earlier this week, the NSA announced that it was going to move the stored records out of active use in November, with a three month period when its employees check them for ‘data integrity’ reasons. It noted, however, that it would not be destroying the records until resolution of the various court cases where the government is under a court order to preserve evidence.”

NYC Rips Hedge Funds Over Puerto Rico, While Giving Them Billions

“Hedge funds that hold billions of dollars of Puerto Rico’s high-yield debt ‘are feeding off the misery of the island,’ Mark-Viverito, speaker of the City Council, told a cheering crowd last week at a City Hall rally. She accused the funds of trying to gut wages, education and health care for the island’s 3.5 million residents.  What she and other critics who spoke that day didn’t say was that New York taxpayers and retirees entrust some of those hedge funds with more than $2.2 billion of the city’s $166 billion in pension assets.  The Puerto Rican government said officials need to cut spending and take other steps to revive the economy, such as cutting the island’s minimum wage below the federal $7.25 level.”

The DOJ ‘Intended To Discourage’ A Historic Medical Marijuana Bill

“An internal Department of Justice memo leaked this week reveals that in the days leading up to last year’s historic passage of a federal medical marijuana protections measure, the DOJ passed around ‘informal talking points’ to members of Congress that were ‘intended to discourage passage’ of the statute due to concerns about overreach.  The leaked memo reveals that the DOJ was concerned that the proposed amendment could effectively ‘limit or possibly eliminate the Department’s ability to enforce federal law in recreational marijuana cases as well.’  Within a year of the amendment passing, though, the DOJ would decide that it actually wasn’t that concerned after all.”
