Oklahoma native revolutionizing medical marijuana

“An Oklahoma native and self-described pothead and high school dropout is leading a multimillion-dollar company doing something that could have put him in prison in Oklahoma for decades.  ‘It’s seriously sweet like candy. Yes. And when you grow it right … That’s why … People say like, ‘Oh, I hate the smell of weed smoke.’ You’ve never smelled my weed smoke, because it’s a bouquet of amazingness,’ said Jayson Emo, also known as ‘Giddy Up,’ laughing.  ‘I got sick of being a criminal back home,’ said Emo.   He launched Emotek in Colorado and now sells International Organization for Standardization-certified cannabis extractors he invented worldwide.”

DEA warns Utah that legal pot could lead to stoned rabbit attacks

“Utah lawmakers are now considering legalizing medical marijuana in their state, which has the DEA very concerned about the impending threat of stoned bunny rabbits.  Special agent Matt Fairbanks is convinced that legalization would only turn the state’s cutest mammals against them.  In a testimony presented to the Utah Senate Panel, Fairbanks shared his harrowing experiences with hares as part of the state’s “cannabis eradication” team.  ‘I deal in facts. I deal in science,’ said Fairbanks, prefacing his argument for the preservation of drug-free wildlife.  Fairbanks said that at some illegal marijuana grow sites he saw ‘rabbits that had cultivated a taste for the marijuana.'”

Native tribes debate entering legal pot business

“Some Native American tribes have done very well for themselves in the casino business. But for tribes whose lands are far off the beaten track, that business won’t work. Many are being encouraged to look for jobs in the energy sector or develop e-commerce ventures, but some are being told they could make millions of dollars using wide open spaces on reservation land growing a very lucrative crop: marijuana. The possibility of growing marijuana popped up in December, when the Justice Department surprised tribal leaders with a memorandum suggesting that the agency may consider looking the other way if tribes got into the cannabis business.”

The Thompsons are both medical marijuana users with doctor’s prescriptions. Jesse Thompson, a cancer survivor, takes it for pain, while Vicca Thompson, 43, uses it for arthritis and a nervous condition. Pressure to legalise marijuana after Australian boy denied treatment

“The parents of a three-year-old boy and a Melbourne hospital clashed after doctors stopped administering cannabis oil to the child because of concerns about legal ramifications.  They turned to cannabis oil to treat their son Cooper’s seizures about a year ago, after doctors told them they had no way of stopping them. They said it had been highly effective.  But after at first helping to administer the drug, the ABC said, hospital staff warned [the parents] that if they continued to give Cooper the oil, police would be informed.  [The parents] had their house raided in July after telling Channel Seven’s Sunday Night program about using marijuana oil on Cooper.”

Infant recovers from brain tumor after treatment with cannabis oil

“Instead of opting for chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to shrink an inoperable brain tumor, the father of an eight-month-old baby pushed for alternative treatment with cannabis oil. The baby’s physician, Dr. William Courtney, was initially skeptical early in his career about cannabis as medicine but has since seen such impressive results that he’s now a staunch advocate for its use.  ‘They were putting cannabinoid oil on the baby’s pacifier twice a day, increasing the dose… And within two months there was a dramatic reduction, enough that the pediatric oncologist allowed them to go ahead with not pursuing traditional therapy,’ said Dr. Courtney in an interview with The Huffington Post.”

New study reveals: Marijuana may slow, halt progression of Alzheimer’s

“Neuroscientists found that extremely low doses of a compound found in marijuana may slow or halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.  A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease reported that neuroscientists using a cellular model of Alzheimer’s found low doses of [THC] reduced the production of amyloid beta, and prevented abnormal accumulation, which is one of the early signs of the memory-loss disease.  Neuroscientists also found THC enhanced mitochondrial function which is needed to supply energy, transmit signals and maintain a healthy brain.  As many as 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, projected to reach 14 million by 2050.”

Dr. Grinspoon’s Kind War: Interview With a Renegade Marijuana Proponent

“I was put up for early promotion to full professor in about 1975, a few years after Marihuana Reconsidered came out. My chief, who had put me up for early full professorship, was on the promotions committee. He came back from the promotions committee meeting and asked me to come to his office to give me the bad news. They had turned me down. When I asked him why he said, ‘Well, they loved your work on schizophrenia, but Marihuana Reconsidered – they hated that.’ I asked why. He said, ‘They said it was too controversial. [..]’ I said, ‘What has controversy got to do with it? We’re in the academy. Isn’t scholarship the criterion, or one of the most important?'”

Use of Marijuana Said to Reduce Deaths From Painkillers by 25%

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“So-called ‘opiates’ are a very lucrative market for Big Pharma. Unfortunately, their chemical construction often renders them overly-powerful for some people, even when only a little is ingested. Additionally, chemical combinations mimicking natural compositions often yield up considerable ‘side effects.’ The use of marijuana by itself or in combination with opiates seems to be ameliorating or at least lessening some of the dangers of chemically constructed painkillers. This is certainly good news. What remains problematic is the continued barrage of criticism that cannabis is subject to from deep-pocketed pharmaceutical companies and from law enforcement itself.”
