Germany’s Green-Energy Disaster

“Even though green-energy programs are a disgusting boondoggle, American taxpayers and consumers should be thankful they’re not in Germany.  Our programs may be wasteful and corrupt, but we’re amateurs compared to what’s happening on the other side of the Atlantic.  As is so often the case with government intervention, the promises from politicians about low costs were a mirage.  Perhaps the most shocking part of the story is that Germans are being forced to pay $26 billion in subsidies to get less than $4 billion of green energy.”

Australia’s Carbon Tax: Lessons for the United States

“The real-world results in Australia throw cold water on the claims made by proponents of a U.S. carbon tax. Every single claim they make in their case for a U.S. carbon tax had the opposite effect in Australia. In the year after Australia’s carbon tax was introduced, household electricity prices rose 15%, including the biggest quarterly increase on record. Currently 19% of the typical household’s electricity bill is due to Australia’s carbon tax and other ‘green’ programs such as a renewable energy mandate. The job market had previously been stable, but after Australia’s carbon tax the number of unemployed began rising rapidly.”

IMF Bureaucrats With Tax-Free Salaries Propose $1.40/Gallon Gas Tax Hike

“For the United States, the IMF estimated that would require a $1.40 levy per gallon of gas and other fees totaling more than $1,400 per person each year — around $500 billion in total.  Wow, that’s more than $5,500 for a family of four. Remember that these bureaucrats get extremely generous tax-free salaries, yet they apparently don’t see any hypocrisy in recommending huge tax increases for the peasantry. P.S. You’ll be happy to know that the IMF study deliberately ‘did not look at government support for the alternative energy industry.’ So Obama’s corrupt ‘green energy’ programs got a free pass. Gee, how convenient.”

MIT Economist’s Audacious Paper on Economic Climate Models

“There is no underlying economic theory and we have no empirical data by which to estimate the impacts on humans coming from even moderate (let alone large) increases in global temperatures. Thus when economists design computer simulations of the global climate and economy, going centuries into the future, they literally just make up relationships between hypothetical temperature increases and the corresponding percentage decrease in the global GDP. Then, in an excellent illustration of ‘groupthink,’ the creators of these made-up damage functions justify them by pointing to third-party summaries done of their own (made-up) damage functions.”

Global warming is ‘no longer a planetary emergency’

wuwt_header91

“The World Federation of Scientists, at its annual seminars on planetary emergencies, has been advised by its own climate monitoring panel that global warming is no longer a planetary emergency.  Professor Essex called for ‘free and open debate on all aspects of climate science, even where hypotheses are put forward for examination that openly contradict the official positions of political entities.’ He said the panel found persuasive indications that climate models systematically understated natural climate variability and significantly exaggerated the impact of CO2 emissions. Accordingly, past, present and proposed policy measures could be shown not to provide net benefits to society.”

Scientists insist global warming ‘hiatus’ will be brief

“Grasping one of the thorniest issues in climate politics, the researchers said the recent slowdown lies in a natural but temporary cooling in the tropical Pacific Ocean.  Contrary to earlier predictions, warming of Earth’s surface in recent years has not occurred in lock-step with rising levels of heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere.  Over the last 50 years, temperatures have risen by an average of 0.12 degrees Celsius (0.21 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. But over the last 15 years, the increase has slowed to a rate of 0.05 C (0.09 F) per decade, even though fossil-fuel carbon emissions continue to break new records.”

Global Warming Alarmists Seek to Restrict Air Conditioning

New York University sociology professor Eric Klinenberg said it is ‘indefensible’ for people to use air conditioning the way we do. Klinenberg argues that air conditioning requires too much electricity, the generation of which accelerates global warming.  ‘What’s indefensible is our habit of converting homes, offices and massive commercial outlets into igloos on summer days, regardless of how hot it is outdoors,’ wrote Klinenberg. Klinenberg also argued for laws requiring businesses to keep summer temperatures at their facilities above a government-dictated mandatory minimum.”

John Kerry: Science on climate change is ‘irrefutable and it is alarming’

“US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday the evidence for climate change was beyond dispute but it was not too late for international action to prevent its worst impacts. ‘The science is clear. It is irrefutable and it is alarming,’ Kerry told a climate conference in Majuro in the Marshall Islands in a video address from Washington.  ‘If we continue down our current path, the impacts of climate change will only get worse.’  Kerry said without strong, immediate action, the world would experience threats to critical infrastructure, regional stability, public health, economic vitality, and the long-term viability of some states.”

British Politicians Aim To Ban Non-Hybrid Cars By 2040

“While some American politicians may take issue with the government’s investment in green automobiles, it pales in comparison to the debates taking place in England. There, the Liberal Democrats have proposed a bill that would outlaw all non-hybrid cars from English roads by 2040. It sounds insane, but stranger things have happened. Ambitious but left with a lot of blanks to fill, one of the key components of the Liberal Dems Britain of the future is eliminating all but ultra-low emissions non-freight vehicles from British roads. That would mean only hybrids, electric cars, or super-efficient diesels would be allowed to drive British streets.”

Chinese Leadership Announces New Focus on Green Energy

“The government is upgrading the environmental sector to the rank of a ‘key industry,’ a title that had been reserved for the steel and pharmaceutical industries, as well as biotechnology. Under the new guideline, the sector is expected to earn a massive $728 billion (€545 billion) by 2015, and to grow at twice the rate of the rest of the economy. Beijing wants to boost manufacturers of energy-efficient power plant equipment, significantly increase the number of cars and buses running on liquefied natural gas and further expand the number of wind and solar farms, as well as nuclear power plants, using investments, tax breaks and direct subsidies.”
