Doctors fight back against new role as gun control arbiters

“Within the new Obamacare law is a provision that critics say places their doctors, nurses, and hospitals in the role of arbiters in the push for more gun control. A previous Examiner report exposed that fact.  But many doctors are fighting back. They don’t want to be gun control arbiters. They do not see such a thing as being part of their role as medical care providers. And even if they were forced into such a role, they see themselves as ill-equipped to make such decisions.  The doctors in particular cite statistics that do not match the government rhetoric concerning guns.”

NSA mass collection of phone data is legal, federal judge rules

“A legal battle over the scope of US government surveillance took a turn in favour of the National Security Agency on Friday with a court opinion declaring that bulk collection of telephone data does not violate the constitution.  The judgement, in a case brought before a district court in New York by the American Civil Liberties Union, directly contradicts the result of a similar challenge in a Washington court last week which ruled the NSA’s bulk collection program was likely to prove unconstitutional and was ‘almost Orwellian’ in scale.  Friday’s ruling makes it more likely that the issue will be settled by the US supreme court, although it may be overtaken by the decision of Barack Obama.”

500 Years Shows that Mass Spying Always Aims at Crushing Dissent

“General warrants were largely declared illegal in Britain in 1765.  But the British continued to use general warrants in the American colonies.  In fact, the Revolutionary War was largely launched to stop the use of general warrants in the colonies.  King George gave various excuses of why general warrants were needed for the public good, of course … but such excuses were all hollow.  The New York Review of Books notes that the American government did not start to conduct mass surveillance against the American people until long after the Revolutionary War ended … but once started, the purpose was to crush dissent.”

Wall Street Predicts $50 Billion Bill to Settle U.S. Mortgage Suits

“Wall Street could pay nearly $50 billion to buy peace from federal authorities who are taking aim at the banks over their role in the mortgage crisis, according to interviews and a confidential analysis of the industry’s potential legal exposure.  Bracing for a potential reckoning, the banks and their outside lawyers are quietly using JPMorgan Chase’s record $13 billion mortgage settlement in November to do the math and determine just how much each bank might have to pay to move beyond the torrent of government mortgage litigation that has dogged them since the financial crisis.”

Watch the Movie Before it is Filmed

“Once a government has applied force and the force has failed in its objective, the government almost invariably reacts by applying more force—more of what caused the problem in the first place. The importance of this tendency cannot be overstated. Almost invariably, what does happen is that greater force is applied. Greater, more reckless and more irrational force.  Those who live in a country that has reached the decline stage may reason, ‘My country is following a similar pattern to that of Venezuela, so I should face the fact that, soon, I can expect the pattern to complete itself. I should anticipate the price controls, takeover of private sector factories, etc., and finally, governing by decree.'”

Venezuelan president Maduro gets power to rule by decree

“Maduro requested a month ago to be given expanded power to enact laws without consulting congress for up to a year.  Maduro in recent days has ordered the military to seize dozens of appliance stores, slash prices on imported electronics and arrest more than 100 business owners for alleged price gouging.  the Venezuelan unit of General Motors was fined the equivalent of US$85,000 for allegedly overcharging and practicing ‘usury’ in the sale of car parts to local concessionaires. The government also asked Twitter to take down accounts of users posting the illegal black market exchange rate for Venezuela‘s bolivar currency, which is trading at about one-tenth of the official value.”

Predictable Rise of Populism

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Both populism and corporatism are significant paradigms of control. Modern corporatism uses the building blocks of central banking, corporate personhood and ‘democracy’ to create a top-down, elite-controlled society that gradually collapses inward on itself as fewer and fewer individuals control more and more assets. Modern populism is the elite-developed antidote. This attacks central banking and corporatism by proposing that government be used to make life fairer for the ‘people.’ Of course, what is really going on is that the top elites are actually behind populism and are cleverly proposing a solution that is a Trojan Horse for further elite control.”

Regulating Bad Behavior on Wall Street: Who’s at Fault?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“FINRA, the SEC, etc., would do better to confront the real problem of financial markets, which is its tendency to radically overinflate and then collapse. It is this organized stimulation that is force-feeding money into securities markets around the world, eventually creating the boom-to-end-all-booms. Today we can clearly see the construction of another – vaster – bubble economy. Those orchestrating this are the real culprits. Crime thrives when there is an environment for it. The larger manipulations of finance and investing provide ample opportunity for fraud. If one wants to reduce such fraud, one needs to attack the macro factors, not the micro ones.”

Is War With China Inevitable?

“China has stopped future increases of dollar forex holdings, and has cut the use of the dollar in bilateral trade agreements with multiple countries.  Oil-producing nations are shifting alliances to China because it is now the world’s largest consumer of petroleum. And, China has clearly been preparing for this eventuality for years. So, given these circumstances, how can the U.S. government conceive of confrontation with the East? Challenging one’s creditors to a duel does not usually end well. At the very least, it would be economic suicide. But perhaps that is the point. Perhaps America is meant to make this seemingly idiotic leap.”

Afghanistan gains will be lost quickly after drawdown: NIE

“The National Intelligence Estimate, which includes input from the country’s 16 intelligence agencies, predicts that the Taliban and other power brokers will become increasingly influential as the United States winds down its longest war in history.  The report predicts that Afghanistan would likely descend into chaos quickly if Washington and Kabul don’t sign a security pact that would keep an international military contingent there beyond 2014 — a precondition for the delivery of billions of dollars in aid that the United States and its allies have pledged to spend in Afghanistan over the coming years.  That conclusion is widely shared among U.S. officials working on Afghanistan.”
