Americans Aren’t Buying the Media’s Push For A War In Syria

“While the mainstream media has enjoyed a monopoly on this thought-enforcement for decades, thanks to decentralized power of the internet there are signs that Americans are starting to wake up. Administration claims, whether they be about the next country that needs to be bombed or the status of the economy, are now more easily scrutinized than ever before. Rather than an acceptable, bipartisan mainstream and a kooky fringe, slowly but surely the real ideological battle lines are being drawn: individualism vs. authoritarianism. Those of us who believe in peace and the Bill of Rights on one side, and those who believe in unlimited state power on the other.”

Turkish protester’s tear-gas death sparks angry new demonstrations in Istanbul

“Turkish police fired tear gas and plastic bullets at thousands of people who gathered in Istanbul Tuesday to protest the death of a 22-year-old demonstrator in southern Turkey. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people rallied on the outskirts of Taksim Square, scene of unprecedented mass anti-government protests in June, and shouted slogans including ‘Taksim will be the graveyard of fascism’, an AFP journalist witnessed.  Police prevented the protesters from entering the square, before pushing them back using tear gas and plastic bullets.  Ahmet Atakan died in hospital Monday night after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister during clashes between police and around 150 protesters.”

The Truth About Marissa Mayer: An Unauthorized Biography

“A year after Mayer took over Yahoo, the company’s stock price was up 100 percent. Engineers wanted to work for Yahoo again. More importantly, so did sought-after startup CEOs like Tumblr founder David Karp, who agreed to sell his company to Yahoo for $1.1 billion.  Most CEOs of Mayer’s stature — people running multibillion-dollar public companies the size of Yahoo — are gregarious, outgoing types. Baby-kissers. Back-slappers. Schmoozers. Mayer is not that type. Peers from every stage of her life say Mayer is a shy, socially awkward person. How in the world has she overcome such a disadvantage to rise so far, so fast?”

How Millennials will shape the future of work

“92 percent of Millennials believe that business should be measured by more than just profit and should focus on a societal purpose. Millennials want the flexibility to work from home and make their own hours. A Cisco study shows that 70 percent of students believe it is unnecessary to be in an office regularly. Millennials will make working from home or from shared office spaces the norm — goodbye cubicles! The New York Times reports that the average amount of office space per employees in the U.S. has already dropped from 400 square feet to 250 and in the future will be reduced to 150. The idea that we’ll be walking into a major office building will face away.”

U.S. Court: Journalist Barrett Brown Can’t Talk To The Press Any More

techdirt1

“We just wrote about the ridiculousness of Barrett Brown’s case, in which he’s been in jail and facing a very long sentence mainly for copying a URL from one place to another, but also because the feds have been seeking a media gag. Tragically, the court has now granted that gag order. Neither Brown nor his legal team is allowed to speak to the media. It’s perfectly reasonable to expect Brown and his legal team to try to draw attention to the ridiculousness of the case, and the only purpose of this sort of gag order is to silence the press and keep the story from getting the kind of attention it deserves, as yet another example of prosecutorial overreach by the DOJ.”

Teacher tells police of pupil ‘enchanted by anarchism’, tips off his university

“A London headteacher today told how he spoke to police about a student and contacted the university he had applied to after he criticised the school on a blog.  Kinnan Zaloom, 19, attacked the way Hampstead School was run on The Hampstead Trash website in a series of posts.  He accused the school of caring more about spending money on its own PR than investing in equipment for pupils, and compared senior staff at the school to characters in George Orwell’s Animal Farm.  The blog was blocked from school computers and Mr Szemalikoswki wrote to Glasgow university, where Mr Zaloom hoped to study, to tell them about it. He also alerted the school’s on-site policeman.”

Police shoot teen skipping school assuming he was burglar

“The person shot by a DeKalb County police officer Tuesday morning was a 16-year-old Southwest DeKalb High School student skipping school, not a would-be burglar as initially believed, police said.  DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said Wednesday the shooting was an ‘unintentional misfire.’  ‘It has been revealed to us that the subject shot by one our DeKalb police officers was not associated with the burglary on Streamside Court,’ Alexander said. ‘He was truant from school and began running when he saw police officers in the area.'”

Kerry After Syria Hearing Protest: ‘I Once Had Very Similar Feelings’

“‘The first time I testified before this committee when I was 27 years old, I had feelings very similar to that protester,’ Kerry said after order was restored. ‘I would just say that is exactly why it is so important that we are all here having this debate, talking about these things before the country and that the Congress itself will act representing the American people. And I think we can all respect those who have a different point of view. And we do.’  Kerry said a Syria strike would ‘unequivocally’ make the U.S. more secure, and Hagel said there are U.S. allies in the region ready to support any U.S. action.”

Signs of a Shift Among Egyptian Protesters to Antigovernment, From Pro-Morsi

“As tens of thousands gathered in the streets of Cairo for the ninth Friday of protests against the takeover, few carried the posters of Mr. Morsi’s face that were once the banner of the Brotherhood’s ‘anti-coup’ coalition. Instead, almost everyone held a sign with a logo memorializing the mass killing by security forces of hundreds of Morsi supporters on Aug. 14.  In at least one march by thousands of demonstrators in the neighborhood of Mohandiseen, many carried signs opposing both the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement behind Mr. Morsi, and the new government installed by General Sisi.”
