U.S. police seek ‘blunt impact projectile’ weapons

“Police have long had what they considered ‘non-lethal’ weapons at their disposal, including pepper spray, stun guns and bean bag projectiles. But even those weapons have caused deaths, leading to a search for ‘less lethal’ alternatives.  Micron Products Inc., based in Fitchburg, makes the new ammunition, which are much larger than rubber bullets and have silicone heads that expand and flatten on impact, enhancing the pain and incapacitating a suspect.  Sixteen law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and six in Canada have purchased the projectiles, including SWAT units of the Los Angeles County and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Departments in California.”

His four main tasks: drawing up a universal law on surveillance; tackling the business models of the big Internet companies; defining what ‘privacy’ exactly entails; and raising awareness of these issues among the public.”

Kerry Calls for Democracy as US Flag Is Raised in Cuba

The War on Air Conditioning Heats Up

In his recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, he singled out air conditioning as a particularly good example of wasteful habits and excessive consumption that overcome our better natures.  Now, it seems to be open season on air conditioning. From a raging Facebook debate over an article that claims that air conditioning is an oppressive tool of the patriarchy to an article in the Washington Post that calls the American use of air conditioning an ‘addiction’ and compares it unfavorably to the European willingness to sweat through the heat of summer, air conditioning is under attack. So I want to defend it.”

Former President Jimmy Carter Calls U.S. an Oligarchy

He has little to lose by being honest, so his comments last week deserve some attention. Carter blasted both major parties and from state legislatures up to Congress. The U.S., he believes, is an oligarchy built on unlimited political bribery. Those are strong words. Ending the Ownership of Money

Hacking Team Breach Shows a Global Spying Firm Run Amok

In the case of the freshly disemboweled Italian surveillance firm Hacking Team, the company may also serve as a dark example of a global surveillance industry that often sells to any government willing to pay, with little regard for that regime’s human rights record. On Sunday night, unidentified hackers published a massive, 400 gigabyte trove on bittorrent of internal documents from the Milan-based Hacking Team, a firm long accused of unethical sales of tools that help governments break into target computers and phones.”
