U.S. Risks National Blackout From Knockout Of Nine Power Stations

“The study’s results have been known for months by people at federal agencies, Congress and the White House, who were briefed by then-FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff and others at the commission.  FERC has given the industry until early June to propose new standards for the security of critical facilities, such as substations.  Executives at several big utilities declined to discuss the risks to substations but said they are increasing spending on security. Virginia-based Dominion Resources Inc., for example, said it planned to spend $300 million to $500 million within seven years to harden its facilities.”

War Is a Certainty

“Any country that is considering waging war against another country should first consider that the loser is almost always the country that runs out of money first.  No venture is more costly than warfare. The EU and the US are bankrupt now. Those presently living in those locales may escape actual duty in the military, but they will unquestionably be expected to pick up the tab through taxation.  Those who presently feel that their obligations to their governments are already barely manageable might wish to consider what they will be, both during and after a major war.”

World Health Organization: Daily sugar intake ‘should be halved’

“People will be advised to halve the amount of sugar in their diet, under new World Health Organization guidance.  The recommended sugar intake will stay at below 10% of total calorie intake a day, with 5% the target, says the WHO.  The suggested limits apply to all sugars added to food, as well as sugar naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrates.  UK campaigners say it is a ‘tragedy’ that the WHO has taken 10 years to think about changing its advice.  The recommendation that sugar should account for no more than 10% of the calories in the diet, was passed in 2002.  It works out at about 50g a day for an adult of normal weight, said the WHO.”

Sugar ‘could be addictive’; UK health czar urges 20% tax

“Sugar could be addictive and the government may need to introduce a tax on it in order to combat obesity, England’s chief medical officer said on Tuesday.  Dame Sally Davies made the comments to the Commons health select committee a day ahead of an announcement from the World Health Organisation on new proposed limits for sugar consumption.  UK groups such as the Children’s Food Campaign have been lobbying for a tax on sugar in food and drinks. Doctors also supported the call for a 20% tax on sugary drinks in a report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in February.”

Ron Paul slams US on Crimea crisis: Russia sanctions ‘an act of war’

“The former Republican congressman and three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul has launched a scathing attack on what he calls a US-backed coup in Ukraine, insisting the Crimean people have the right to align their territory with Moscow and characterising sanctions against Russia as ‘an act of war’.  He also said providing economic aid to Ukraine was comparable to giving support to rebels in Syria knowing it would end up in the hands of al-Qaida.  The libertarian guru’s remarks in an interview with the Guardian are almost diametrically opposed to those of his son, the Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul, who has called for stiff penalties against Russia.”

In sudden announcement, US to give up control of DNS root zone

“In a historic decision on Friday, the United States has decided to give up control of the authoritative root zone file, which contains all names and addresses of all top-level domain names.  The new change is in advance of the upcoming ICANN meeting to be held in Brazil in April 2014. Brazil and other nations have fumed at revelations of American spying on its political leaders and corporations, which were first revealed in September 2013 as the result of documents distributed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.  ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé lauded the decision as ‘historic’ and said that ICANN will be moving toward multi-stakeholder control.”

Pensions in Ukraine to be halved: sequestration draft

“The self-proclaimed government in Kiev is reportedly planning to cut pensions by 50 percent as part of unprecedented austerity measures to save Ukraine from default. With an ’empty treasury’, reduction of payments might take place in March.  Ukraine’s new prime minister, Arseny Yatsenyuk, promised the government would do its best to avoid a default, adding that he expects an EU/IMF economic stabilization package soon.  The European Commission offered Ukraine an 11 billion euro loan if Kiev agrees a deal with the IMF. Accepting IMF money will mean many sacrifices for Ukraine’s economy, [such as] increased gas bills, frozen government salaries, and all around budget cuts.”

A low saturated fat diet ‘will not prevent heart disease or prolong life’

“Health professionals recommend following a diet low in saturated fat. But a leading US cardiovascular scientist says that adopting such a diet does not curb heart disease or prolong life.  In an editorial recently published in the BMJ journal Open Heart, Dr. James DiNicolantonio says the consumption of saturated fat was first criticized back in the 1950s.  But Dr. DiNicolantonio says the findings of this research were flawed. He notes that the study author reached his conclusion using data from only six countries, choosing to exclude data from 16 countries that failed to fit his hypothesis. However, Dr. DiNicolantonio says this data ‘led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades to follow.'”

Ukraine PM says $37 billion went missing under Yanukovich

“Ukraine’s new prime minister said on Thursday loans worth $37 billion had gone missing from state coffers during ousted President Viktor Yanukovich’s rule, and warned that unpopular measures were needed to salvage the economy.  In addition to the missing $37 billion, Yatseniuk said as much as $70 billion had been sent out of the country during Yanukovich’s three-year rule, although he did not make clear how much of this capital flight was illegal.  ‘I want to report to you – the state treasury has been robbed and is empty,’ he said before the national assembly voted him in as head of a national unity government.”

Civilian drone deaths triple in Afghanistan, UN agency finds

“The report, by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama), found that drone strikes accounted for at least a third of all civilian deaths in air strikes last year. Unama notes that it is sometimes difficult to establish which type of aircraft carried out a strike, so the true total could be higher.  The UK and US are the only countries to operate armed drones in the conflict. A December 2012 report by the Bureau found that the two forces had carried out over 1,000 drone strikes in the country in the previous five years. British drones have carried out over a fifth of all these strikes, despite having a much smaller fleet.”
