Nissan To Britain: Stay In The European Union

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“British banking elites have obviously been burning up the phone wires to Tokyo and probably other industrial capitals, as well. The idea is to twist arms of major corporations until they explain to the jobless British public that their continued presence in the EU is necessary if they want to work at all.  Britain, like the rest of Europe, is suffering from a terrible economy. The combination of reckless money-printing and the determination of banking elites not to let a single, bloated financial firm go out of business has virtually paralyzed the British economy, as it has paralyzed much of Europe.”

Americans Suffering Sticker Shock: Is Obamacare Really Affordable?

“It’s Day 8 of the Federal Government shutdown and many citizens who are able to sign up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act are shocked how to see how expensive the plans are for working middle class families.  Workers who were dropped by their employer’s health insurance are being told to sign-up for Obamacare. However, they are discovering that it is certainly not that easy. Workers are finding a buggy and complicated system where their premiums are outrageous and that they are too wealthy for the tax deductions promised under ACA.”

Shutdown: National Park Service Closes Self-Sustaining Colonial Farm

“‘For the first time in 40 years, the National Park Service (NPS) has finally succeeded in closing the Farm down to the public. In previous budget dramas, the Farm has always been exempted since the NPS provides no staff or resources to operate the Farm.’ The Claude Moore Colonial Farm, Eberly says, has thrived even as the federal government has treated it with ‘benign neglect’ for decades. That benign neglect would serve it better than the barricades now surrounding it.”

NSA and GCHQ target Tor network that protects anonymity of web users

“The National Security Agency has made repeated attempts to develop attacks against people using Tor, a popular tool designed to protect online anonymity, despite the fact the software is primarily funded and promoted by the US government itself.  Top-secret NSA documents, disclosed by whistleblower Edward Snowden, reveal that the agency’s current successes against Tor rely on identifying users and then attacking vulnerable software on their computers. One technique developed by the agency targeted the Firefox web browser used with Tor, giving the agency full control over targets’ computers, including access to files, all keystrokes and all online activity.”

Rand Paul teams with Democrats on bill to curb NSA spying

“Four senators at the vanguard of bipartisan efforts to rein in US government spying programs announced the most comprehensive package of surveillance reforms so far presented on Capitol Hill on Wednesday.  The draft bill represented the first sign that key Republican and Democratic figures in the Senate are beginning to coalesce around a raft of proposals to roll back the powers of the National Security Agency in the wake of top-secret disclosures made by whistleblower Edward Snowden.”

The appetite in Washington for reform of surveillance programs was made apparent in July, when a House of Representatives proposal to effectively end the NSA’s bulk collection of phone records of millions of Americans was defeated by just 12 votes.

The amendment, brought by Republican Justin Amash and Democrat John Conyers, was strongly opposed by leaders of the two parties, the White House, and the intelligence establishment.

The fact it was only narrowly defeated revealed the depth of anger in some quarters of Capitol Hill over the perceived excesses of the NSA – and provided a glimpse of the potential strength of a House alliance between libertarian Republicans and left-leaning Democrats.

Which Shade of Lipstick Looks Best on a Pig?

google-search-header2

“Meanwhile, if you think your phone calls and emails will satiate the NSA’s sickos, think again. They claim they  have ‘justification to collect other bulk data — like medical and business records — with court approval.’ Does that move the curs and cowards in elective office to abolish this horrific agency? Of course not: ‘Members of Congress said Thursday that some change in the way the NSA operates is inevitable, even if it is limited only to revising what information the agency must divulge to Congress.’ Yep, never send a politician to do what we should do ourselves, in this case, driving a stake through the NSA’s heart.”

Senate About to Legalize NSA Logging of Every American’s Phone Calls?

EPJ13

“This is what I feared would be the ultimate outcome of the Snowden revelations.  Bottom line: At this point, the only clear result of the Snowden leaks is that the Senate is about to pass a bill legalizing the logging of the phone calls of all Americans. Further, who knows what amendments will be added in the mark up stage.  Don’t for a minute think the mark ups are going to advance privacy. It will be all about complex paragraphs that will allow even greater surveillance.”

The United Nations vs. the NSA

“It didn’t take long for the recent NSA leaks to dog President Obama and the United States at Tuesday’s UN General Assembly debate in New York City. The very first speaker of the day was Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who devoted a third of her speech to bashing the NSA’s mass global surveillance operations. But what other diplomatic fallout might we see at the UN stemming from Edward Snowden’s revelations? RT’s Sam Sacks reports.”

Ex-Army sergeants accused of working as drug cartel’s killers-for-hire

“A 48-year-old former U.S. Army sergeant was accused of being the ringleader of a five-man squad that acted as a hit squad for drug traffickers, CNN reported on Friday. Authorities accused Hunter of recruiting his team over the course of the past year and promising them ‘tons of cocaine and millions of dollars’ for their involvement, and turned over their resumes to undercover agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency, posing as members of a Colombian drug cartel. Hunter also allegedly boasted about doing multiple ‘bonus jobs,’ as contract killings are often referred to, and expressed interest in doing as many of them as possible. Hunter was in the Army from 1983 to 2004.”

Greek police arrest one of their own while raiding neo-Nazi party’s offices

“A 45-year-old officer, who is working as the bodyguard of a Golden Dawn lawmaker, was detained during the raid at party offices in central Greece, a police source said.  The links between Golden Dawn and police have come under intense scrutiny in Greece after the murder of an anti-fascist musician by an alleged member of the party. Further raids of Golden Dawn’s offices are expected in coming days, the police source said. Capitalising on a rise in social tension in the debt-stricken country, Golden Dawn was first elected to parliament last year with nearly seven percent of the vote, winning 18 seats out of an overall 300.”
